A Message from our Pastor The liturgical season of Christmas begins with the feast of the Nativity of Our Lord (Dec. 25) and ends with the feast of the Baptism of the Lord (Jan. 11). As we began this season with the Christmas Masses, many of you, along with me, marveled at the wonder of Christ’s birth. I could not help but be aware of the graces that God is giving to us as we participate at Mass. Thank you to all who prepared for and participated in the Christmas Masses. Many people gave of their time, effort, and inspiration. In particular, I want to thank the following: Liturgical Ministries—Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Adult and Youth Lectors, Altar Servers, ushers; Liturgical environment—Sacristan and Mass Coordinators, Art & Environment Committee (including the Nativity crèche and set-up / break-down at Metz Middle School), altar linens, church cleaning, and those watering the flowers, along with the Jail Ministry Mass. Also, thank you to our money-counters. A special thank you to all of the Choir Directors., along with our cantors and choirs, organists and pianists, and other musicians. The liturgical music and environment helped to raise our hearts and minds to God to reflect upon this great mystery of Christ’s birth. We also have these same ministries at the Spanish Masses for the Hispanic community, both here at the church and at Manassas Park Community Center. To them, muchas gracias! As you can see, it is always much more than our eyes behold at first. Thank you, also, to the priests, deacons, deacon-candidates, and the parish office staff for their tremendous effort in so many ways in the days before Christmas. Today, on the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord we celebrate when Christ was manifested to the Magi (wise men) who were visitors from the East. They became bathed in the light of Christ and realized that their lives held new meaning. Jesus is the epiphany (manifestation) of the invisible God. Through the grace which the Holy Spirit imparts to us, we can discover the many epiphanies of our own lives. God gives us glimpses of his glory. The priests of the parish thank you for the cards, notes, gifts, and goodies that you gave during the Christmas season. May God bless you in this new year. A happy and blessed new year! Father Lee Roos T HE P ROCLAMATION OF THE D ATE OF E ASTER The Announcement of Easter and the Moveable Feasts dates from a time when calendars were not readily available. This still has value because it is a reminder of the centrality of the resurrection of the Lord in the liturgical year and the importance of the great mysteries of faith which are celebrated each year. Know, dear brothers and sisters, that, as we have rejoiced at the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, so by leave of God’s mercy we announce to you also the joy of his Resurrection, who is our Savior. On the 18th day of February will fall Ash Wednesday, and the beginning of the fast of the most sacred Lenten season. On the 5th day of April you will celebrate with joy Easter Day, the Paschal feast of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the 14th day of May will be the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the 24th day of May, the feast of Pentecost. On the 7th day of June, the feast of the Most Hoy Body and Blood of Christ. On the 29th day of November, the First Sunday of the Advent of our Lord Jesus Christ, to who is honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. Roman Missal, Third Edition © 2010. S PECIAL C OLLECTION FOR E BOLA C RISIS R ELIEF Archbishop Paul Coakley, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Catholic Relief Services [CRS] (and Archbishop of Oklahoma City) has requested a special collection to support the work of the Catholic Church in combating the Ebola virus in West Africa. At All Saints, this collection will be taken up today, Sun., Jan. 4. CRS has long been active in the three countries most affected by Ebola – Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. As there is no vaccine or cure for Ebola, the best weapon against the virus is information about how to avoid contracting or spreading it. This has been the focus of CRS’s effort, working with the local Church. In addition, CRS has been instrumental in helping to reopen a major Catholic health facility in Liberia that had closed when many of its staff died from Ebola. In Sierra Leone, CRS is working to see that those who die of Ebola – their bodies dangerously infectious – receive burials that are both safe and dignified. Much work remains to be done, first to contain Ebola and then, in the longer term, to alleviate the damage it has done. Let us support this work generously, and join in praying for those suffering from the effects of this deadly disease and for the men and women working to combat it and other threats to human life and dignity.
