School Mass: Fr iday, September 18th at 8:30AM
Prepared by Grade 6 (Mrs. Theresa Parriott)
Augustinian Father Cedric Wilson assists us with Sunday
evening Masses in English and Spanish several times a
month.
Congratulations and God’s blessings to Fr. Wilson
as he celebrates the 37th anniversary
of ordination to priesthood.
Please remember him in your prayer.
Sept. 16, 1978
Fr. Cedric M. Wilson, OSA
37 years
This year of 2015-2016, our parish theme is “I know well
the plans I have in mind for you, says the LORD, … plans to
give you a future full of hope.” (Jer 29:11) This theme,
taken from the Old Testament book of Jeremiah, Chapter
29, in a section entitled Letter to the Exiles in Babylon, took
place when Jerusalem was destroyed in 587 BC and its
leading citizens sent into exile. It is there that God, through
Jeremiah, reminds them of his covenant promise: “For I
know well the plans I have in mind for you, says the LORD,
plans for your welfare, not for woe! plans to give you a
future full of hope.” As I reflected upon Divine Providence
and how God provides for us when we may find it difficult
to see this, I saw this passage as a means for us to
remember God’s promises in our own time. With the
upcoming Jubilee Year of Mercy, announced by Pope
Francis, this theme will help us to be mindful that God’s
mercy is what makes the future present to us in a new way.
I encourage you to read the passage below (Jeremiah 29:1–
14) from which this theme is taken.
Letter to the Exiles in Babylon. 1 This is the contents
of the letter which the prophet Jeremiah sent from
Jerusalem to the remaining elders among the exiles, to
the priests, the prophets, and all the people who were
exiled by Nebuchadnezzar from Jerusalem to Babylon. 2
This was after King Jeconiah and the queen mother, the
courtiers, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, the
artisans and the skilled workmen had left Jerusalem.
3
Delivered in Babylon by Elasah son of Shaphan, and
by Germariah, son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah, king of
Judah, sent to the king of Babylon, the letter read:
On September 3rd, Bishop Loverde celebrated his 75th
birthday. In accord with Canon Law (c. 401 §1), at age 75,
a diocesan bishop, “is requested to present his resignation
from office to the Supreme Pontiff who will make
provisions after he has examined all the circumstances.”
Until there is an action by Pope Francis indicating
otherwise, Bishop Loverde remains the Bishop of
Arlington. Please remember Bishop Loverde in your
prayers and also pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit for
our Holy Father in the selection of the next Bishop of
Arlington.
Today is our parish’s Stewardship Sunday. Each of us has
been entrusted with many talents for the building up of the
Kingdom of God on earth. This happens in a very practical
manner in our parish, as you serve in various liturgical,
educational, pastoral care, and social outreach ministries.
After the Sunday morning Masses and the 1:30PM Spanish
Mass today, we will have our Stewardship Ministry Fair in
the parish activities center, along with coffee and donuts.
Many of our ministries will have information and sign-up
tables. Please consider how you may volunteer to share
your talents and time with your fellow parishioners in the
coming year. None of us can do everything, but all of us
can do something. Living out the grace of our Baptism and
Confirmation, we can build up the Body of Christ so that all
may grow in faith and service.
I also ask that we pray for Pope Francis as he comes to
Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and New York, later this
month.

Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to all
the exiles whom I exiled from Jerusalem to Babylon:
5
Build houses to dwell in; plant gardens, and eat their
fruits. 6 Take wives and beget sons and daughters; find
wives for your sons and give your daughters husbands,
so that they may bear sons and daughters. There you
must increase in number, not decrease. 7 Promote the
welfare of the city to which I have exiled you; pray for
it to the LORD, for upon it welfare depends your own.
10
Thus says the LORD: Only after seventy years have
elapsed for Babylon will I visit you and fulfill for you
my promise to bring you back to this place. 11 For I
know well the plans I have in mind for you, says the
LORD, plans for your welfare, not for woe! plans to give
you a future full of hope. 12 When you call me, when
you go to pray to me, I will listen to you. 13 When you
look for me you will find me. Yes, when you seek me
with all your heart, 14 you will find me with you, says
the LORD, and I will change your lot; I will gather you
together from all the nations and all the places to which
I have banished you, says the LORD, and bring you back
to the place from which I have exiled you.

Adult Education
Pastoral Care Needs
This Fall, for Adult Faith Formation Father Lee and Deacon
Brian Majewski will lead a 6-session video series entitled
The Mystery of God: Who God Is and Why He Maers. This
series is from Bishop-elect Robert Barron (Archdiocese of
Los Angeles; formerly of the Chicago Archdiocese).
Bishop-elect Barron writes:
Please notify us if you have a family member in Prince
William Hospital or one of the nursing homes. A priest or
Eucharistic Minister will then visit. Please call us at 703393-1411 with the name of the person in need and provide
the patient’s name and room number. If you would like
your loved one to be placed on our Parish Prayer Tree,
please call Maureen at 703-361-4066. If you would like
your loved one to be placed in the bulletin, please call

WHAT DO WE REALLY MEAN BY “GOD”?
Atheism is on the rise. Skeptical thinkers like Richard
Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and Sam Harris
vigorously attack belief in God as irrational or, even
worse, dangerous. The so-called New Atheism has
attracted millions of young people thanks to bestselling
books such as The God Delusion and God Is Not Great.
How should Christians respond? How can we turn the
tide of secularism and draw people back to God? In this
new six-part film series and study program, Fr. Robert
Barron reaches into our rich intellectual tradition to
teach us how. Using the insights of St. Augustine, St.
Thomas Aquinas, Pope Benedict XVI, he uncovers a
clear yet sophisticated understanding of what we mean
by “God”.
Who is God? And why does he matter? Watch this
series and you’ll not only learn the answers yourself,
but you’ll discover how to share them with others especially those who no longer believe.

RCIA / RCIC Sponsors
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (or children) is the
process for bring adults and young people into the Catholic
Church. Those interested in becoming full members meet
regularly for instruction and an introduction to the Catholic faith
through liturgical rites and the regular experience of prayer and a
caring community.
Each individual in the program needs a sponsor. As a
representative of the faith community, the sponsor is a
companion on the journey to full membership. Sponsors offer
advice and encouragement and grow together with the person
they sponsor as they share their faith together.
There are many adults and young people who do not have
someone in their lives to make that commitment. If you are
interested or willing to share your faith experience with someone
who wishes to join the Church, please contact the Religious
Education office at 703-393-2142 or [email protected].
Samantha Welsh, Director of Religious Education, will be glad to
speak with you about the program.
In the Catholic Church, adults who want

Question of the Week: What shape does my par ticular
cross take? What is the heaviest aspect of it? Forgetting my
own cross for a moment, whose cross do I need to help
carry this week?
Convinced of the inestimable worth of each human being,
Frederic began serving the poor of Paris in the
1830's. Inspired by the work of St. Vincent de Paul two
centuries earlier, Frederic drew others in serving the poor of
the world. His work lives on in the St.Vincent de Paul
Society Conferences that exist around the world today. Here
at All Saints Parish, the St. Vincent de Paul Society strives to
emulate the example of our founder, Blessed Frederic and our
patron, St. Vincent, by reaching out to those in need in our
community.
If you have been wondering how you can put your faith into
action, consider joining the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Call
the number below and leave your name and number; a
Vincentian will return your call.

We are almost there! On September 19th we will launch a
brand new year of TMIY. The third year of the That Man
is You! program is titled The Revelation of the
Father. This year is all about Fatherhood. It is modeled on
the life of St. Joseph, the man chosen to be the foster father
of Jesus Christ, God Incarnate.
This year we will discover:
• The true dignity we have as fathers.
• The reality of what St. John Paul II meant by his quote,
"...men relive and reveal on earth the very fatherhood
of God."
• The challenges confronting men in their fatherhood and
the means to overcome them.
• A parenting method that has proven effective with even
the most difficult children.
We have a great year ahead of us. Now is the time to reach
out to other men to invite them to join us on this
journey. Reach out to men who have been with us before
as well as totally new men. We will meet at 6:00am on
Saturday, September 19th in the Parish Activity Center
(PAC).
