I hope you are not worn out from the intensity of these days. I was rejuvenated by the festivities and ceremonies. At the same time, I was brought close to the suffering of many people in these days. These were not easy days for everyone. It was in those difficult moments that I came to thank God more for coming to be with us as one like us. I hesitate to think of who or what or where I would look to for consolation if I did not know and love Jesus Christ. And this is what makes me want to share my faith with others… it is too precious to keep hidden… and unless I invoke it daily, I am afraid it would wither and shrink. May the birth of the Christ child continue to be the greatest gift in your life… May knowledge of the living God save you this week and bring you eternal life. What is eternal life? Saint John tells us it is knowledge of God and of his Son Jesus Christ. Happy baptism of the Lord. – Father Michael MASS INTENTIONS The following Mass Intentions are scheduled this week: Saturday, January 10 4:00 p.m. - Gemma Santa Maria & Edward Saunders Sunday, January 11 8:00 a.m. - Jim Clasby 10:00 a.m. - Ann Mergens Monday, January 12 12:10 p.m. - Herbert Finley Tuesday, January 13 12:10 p.m. - In thanksgiving for Hervintz (living) Thursday, January 15 12:10 p.m. - Charlotte Riley Saturday, January 17 4:00 p.m. - Evelyn Taddeo Sunday, January 18 8:00 a.m. - Parish & Parishioners 10:00 a.m. - Anne Tebeau Lander STUDY TIME AWAY– FR. VINCENT de PAUL After Jesus was baptized, he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and a voice was heard “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” As we give to the poor, we also can hear these same words. As you place your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box, know that you are a sign of God’s love to those who are suffering and you give them reason to believe and to trust. The heavens are opened and the Spirit of God comes to rest upon Jesus. Spirit of God, rest upon us. For all who have been baptized by water and the Holy Spirit, may we join together to grow spiritually. Christ, the Anointed, you began your public ministry after your baptism. May we offer person-to-person service to the suffering. Christ, the Beloved, you emptied yourself in love for the human family. Open our hearts to the poorest and most abandoned in the spirit of St. Vincent dePaul. Amen. WORDS FROM POPE FRANCIS… On this day of the Baptism of our Lord, let us reflect on the words that Pope Francis spoke to his General Audience in Saint Peter’s Square on Wednesday, January 8, 2014: Baptism is the Sacrament on which our very faith is founded and which grafts us as a living member onto Christ and his Church. Together with the Eucharist and Confirmation it forms what is known as “Christian initiation”, like one great sacramental event that configures us to the Lord and turns us into a living sign of his presence and of his love. Yet a question may stir within us: is Baptism really necessary to live as Christians and follow Jesus? After all, isn’t it merely a ritual, a formal act of the Church in order to give a name to the little boy or girl? This question can arise. And on this point what the Apostle Paul writes is illuminating: “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life” (Rom 6:3-4). Therefore, it is not a formality! It is an act that touches the depths of our existence. A baptized child and an unbaptized child are not the same. A person who is baptized and a person who is not baptized are not the same. We, by Baptism, are immersed in that inexhaustible source of life which is the death of Jesus, the greatest act of love in all of history; and thanks to this love we can live a new life, no longer at the mercy of evil, of sin and of death, but in communion with God and with our brothers and sisters. El Bautismo del Señor St. Mary Parish, Waltham January 11, 2015 SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK We encourage everyone to continue reading the Acts of the Apostles this week … ACTS OF THE APOSTLES – CHAPTER 19 PART 1 Paul in Ephesus. While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior of the country and came (down) to Ephesus where he found some disciples. He said to them, “Did you receive the holy Spirit when you became believers?” They answered him, “We have never even heard that there is a holy Spirit.” He said, “How were you baptized?” They replied, “With the baptism of John.” Paul then said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus.” When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul laid [his] hands on them, the holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. Altogether there were about twelve men. He entered the synagogue, and for three months debated boldly with persuasive arguments about the kingdom of God. But when some in their obstinacy and disbelief disparaged the Way before the assembly, he withdrew and took his disciples with him and began to hold daily discussions in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. This continued for two years with the result that all the inhabitants of the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord, Jews and Greeks alike. So extraordinary were the mighty deeds God accomplished at the hands of Paul that when face cloths or aprons that touched his skin were applied to the sick, their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them. ATTACKS ON GOD Europe, US: destruction of Christian symbols, disruption of Mass Recent weeks have witnessed the destruction of Christian symbols in Europe and the United States and the disruption of a Mass. On Christmas Day, a vandal entered a parish in Douai, France, and decapitated the heads of eight statues in the Nativity scene. In response, three churches in the city of 40,000 will now be closed except during Mass. In Bailleul, a nearby town of 14,000, the image of the child Jesus was taken from the crèche in the parish church. Five protestors identified as Muslims, four of them children, disrupted a Christmas Eve Mass in Mönchengladbach, a city of 250,000 in western Germany. They entered the church shouting obscenities at Christians. In Gross-Enzersdorf, a village of 9,000 in eastern Austria, an Egyptian Muslim immigrant sawed down a crucifix that had been a place of pilgrimage for six decades. In Haverhill, Massachusetts, the image of the Child Jesus was taken from an outdoor crèche at a Catholic parish and replaced with a pig’s head. In the weeks before Christmas, Nativity scenes were also vandalized in El Cerrito, California, and Berwyn, Illinois. In the latter incident, young people, one of whom shouted, “Long live Satan,” beheaded statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph in a convent garden. Q & A – LITURGY & SACRAMENTS We continue with our “Question & Answer” series about Liturgy and the Sacraments. The text is taken from the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. • What is the sacramental character? It is a spiritual “seal” bestowed by the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders. It is a promise and guarantee of divine protection. By virtue of this seal the Christian is configured to Christ, participates in a variety of ways in his priesthood and takes his part in the Church according to different states and functions. He is, therefore, set apart for divine worship and the service of the Church. Because this character is indelible the sacraments that impress it on the soul are received only once in life. HOME FUEL ASSISTANCE The state of Massachusetts has a program that provides home heating assistance between November 1, 2014 and April 30, 2015.
