Dear PS 133 Families,
Open School Night
Parent-Teacher Conferences were considered to be a time for the parent and teacher to have a very “teacher directed”
conversation about the student’s progress. This year, student led conferences will replace the traditional parent-teacher
conferences. With student-led conferences, the students are expected to take ownership over their learning by leading the
conference, with the teacher serving as the facilitator. During the conference, the student will explain their progress toward
and mastery of both academic (reading, writing, and math) and social goals. The teacher will facilitate the conversation by
asking open-ended questions and reviewing previous set goals with the student. Parents are “listening in” and will have an
opportunity at the end of the conference to ask clarifying questions. The entire conference will last no more than 15
minutes.
Our first student- led conference will be held on Thursday, November 14th from 1:00p.m.-3:00pm and 4:30p.m.7:30pm. Additional appointment times for student- led conferences will be held on Tuesday, November 18th and 25th
from 2:50p.m. - 3:55p.m. Appointments will be scheduled in 15 minute increments. Your class parent or teacher will be in
contact with you to schedule appointments. Report Cards will be distributed to students on Monday, November 10th for
your review and they must be returned on the day of your appointment.
Caregivers’ role in the student -led conference is as follows:
 Your child must accompany you to the conference.
 It is imperative that you arrive on time for your scheduled appointment. Teachers and students will have prepared
for this conference and your child(ren) will have quite a bit to share with you in the allotted time frame of 15
minutes.
 Parent/Guardians must be willing to let the student speak, saving questions until the end.
 Parent/Guardian shares any concern with the teacher at the end of the conference.
 Parent /Guardian helps the student meet his /her academic and behavioral goals by supporting their progress at
home.
As we begin the third month of school, we continue to encourage our students to be the best readers, writers scientists,
historians, and mathematicians. As mentioned during the Curriculum Night Meeting in September, the Common Core
Standards also support building students’ academic vocabulary in all areas. To meet our goals, we definitely need your
support! We are asking that you do the following to support your child’s educational growth:
 Please make sure that your child reads at home for an extended period of time daily. Please sign their reading
log, and review your child’s homework assignments. Ask your child to retell a story in his or her own words
by telling what happened first, second, third, etc. Ask your child to think about what the message of a story may
be or what he or she learned from an informational book or article.
 All grades will be immersed in an Informational unit of study at some point during the school year. Question your
child about what he/she is studying at school. Borrow books from the library to support their interest or the
current unit of study. ALL students should have a library card. Many libraries have book clubs and family
activities that make reading fun for the entire family.
 We have implemented a school-wide word of the week (which is denoted on the school’s calendar). Encourage
your youngster to research the definition, use the word in context and incorporate it in their writing.
 Read to your child and have him or her read to you every day for the age appropriate amount of time. Pick out
words that might be new to your child or words that have multiple or complex meanings. Discuss those words
and how they add to what the writer is saying.
 Look for opportunities in everyday places to build your child’s vocabulary.
 Use technology to help build your child’s interest in reading. There are several websites where students can read
books or articles online.

Our Annual Book Fair will be held during the week of November 10th – 14th. Students will attend the fair according
to their assigned times. Be sure to take a look at the class wish list posted at the book fair.
Our Annual Harvest Festival was a huge success. We thank you for your contributions to this event. We will host a
Staff/Parent Mixer on November 20th from 6-8 PM in our school’s gymnasium. Mark your calendars and join us for an
evening of fun. This is an adult only event.
Blue Emergency Cards
We need to be able to reach you! Complete and return the Blue Emergency Cards to your child’s teacher. We are still
missing cards. It is our only way of contacting you in the case of an emergency. If your contact information has changed, it
is imperative that you notify us in writing, or come into the main office to update the information on the card.

Las conferencias de padres y maestros han sido consideradas un tiempo para que los padres y maestros tengan una
conversación acerca del progreso de los estudiantes. Por lo regular esta conversación ha sido dirigida por el maestro. Este
año, las conferencias serán dirigidas por los estudiantes. En estas conferencias, la expectativa es que los estudiantes tomen
la iniciativa con su aprendizaje dirigiendo la conferencia y el maestro sea el facilitador. Durante la conferencia, el estudiante
explicará su progreso en las áreas de escritura, lectura y matemáticas tanto como en el área social y emocional. El maestro
facilitará la conversación haciendo preguntas en la cual le permite a los estudiantes reflejar acerca de sus metas. Los padres
escucharán y tendrán la oportunidad de hacer preguntas. La conferencia no durará más de 15 minutos.
La primera conferencia dirigida por los estudiantes tomará lugar el jueves, 14 de noviembre desde la 1:00p.m hasta las
3:00pm y a las 4:30p.m hasta las 7:30pm. Habrán citas adicionales para las conferencias los martes 18 y 25 de noviembre
desde las 2:50p.m hasta las 3:55p.m. El padre representante de su clase estará en contacto con usted para comunicarle el
proceso para hacer la cita. El reporte de calificaciones será distribuido a los estudiantes el lunes, 10 de noviembre para que
puedan repasarlo y devolverlo el día de su cita.
El rol del padre durante la conferencia es el siguiente:


Usted debe acompañar a su hijo(a) a la cita.
Es súper importante que sea puntual para la cita. Los maestros y estudiantes estarán preparados para la cita y su
hijo(a) tendrá mucho que compartir en 15 minutos.
 Los padres/guardianes deben permitir que el estudiante hable, reservándose sus preguntas para el final.
 Los padres/guardianes comparten sus inquietudes y preguntas para el maestro al final de la conferencia.
 Los padres/guardianes ayudan al estudiante alcanzar sus metas académicas y de comportamiento apoyando su
progreso en el hogar.
Al comenzar el tercer mes de escuela, continuamos apoyando a nuestros estudiantes a ser los mejores lectores, escritores
científicos, historiadores, y matemáticos. Como se mencionó en la reunión del currículo el mes pasado, normas
fundamentales comunes apoyan el vocabulario académico para los estudiantes en todos los ámbitos. Para lograr nuestros
objetivos, necesitamos tu apoyo! Estamos pidiendo que haga lo siguiente para apoyar el desarrollo de la educación de sus
hijos:

Por favor asegúrese de que su hijo lea en su casa por un período prolongado diariamente. Por favor firme sus registros
de lectura, y revise sus tareas. Pídale a su hijo que relate una historia con sus propias palabras y que describa lo que
sucedió primero, segundo, tercero, etc. Pídale a su niño que piense sobre el mensaje del cuento o lo que haya extraído
del libro o artículo informativo.

Todos los grados están inmersos en el estudio de no-ficción. Pregúntele a su niño sobre lo que el/ella está estudiando
en la escuela. Tomen libros prestados de la biblioteca para apoyar a sus intereses o estudios. Todos los estudiantes
deben tener una tarjeta de la biblioteca. Muchas de las bibliotecas tienen clubs de lectura y actividades familiares que
hacen la lectura divertida para toda la familia.
 Hemos implementado una palabra de la semana (que se denota en el calendario). Anime a su joven a que investigue la
definición, utilice la palabra en su contexto e incorporarlo en su escritura.
 Leer con su niño y pédale que le lea a usted cada día para una cantidad de tiempo. Seleccióne palabras que podrían ser
nuevas para su niño o palabras que tienen varias o significados complejos. Hable sobre estas palabras y la forma en que el
escritor las e usado.

Busque oportunidades en la vida diaria para desarrollar el vocabulario de su hijo
 Utilize la tecnología para ayudar a desarrollar el interés del niño en la lectura. Hay varios sitios donde los estudiantes
pueden leer libros o artículos en línea.

Nuestra feria anual de libros se celebrará durante la semana del 10 al 14 de noviembre. Los estudiantes asistirán a la feria
según sus tiempos asignados. Asegúrese de tomar una mirada a la lista de deseos de la clase en la feria de libro.
Nuestra Feria de Otoño fue un gran éxito. Le damos las gracias por sus contribuciones hacia este evento. Tendremos un
evento social para los padres y la facultad el 20 de noviembre desde las 6 a las 8 PM en el gimnasio de la escuela. Marquen
sus calendarios y acompáñenos en una noche de diversión. Este evento es solo para adultos.

Nosotros debemos ser capaces de comunicarnos con usted! Complete y regrese la Tarjeta de Emergencia al maestro de su niño.
Todavía nos faltan trajetas. Es nuestra única forma de ponernos en contacto con usted en caso de una emergencia. Si su
información de contacto ha cambiado, es imprescindible que usted nos notifique por escrito.
