(San
Juan XIII: 14-15).

“MAKE AMERICA . . . A BETTER NATION”
Remembering the Christian Witness of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
(Words taken from King’s “I’ve Been To The Mountaintop Speech”)
“One day a man came to Jesus and he wanted to raise some
questions about some vital matters of life. At points he wanted to
trick Jesus, and show him that he knew a little more than Jesus knew
and throw him off base. Now that question could have easily ended
up in a philosophical and theological debate. But Jesus immediately
pulled that question from midair and placed it on a dangerous curve
between Jerusalem and Jericho. And he talked about a certain man
who fell among thieves. You remember that a Levite and a priest
passed by on the other side; they didn't stop to help him. Finally, a
man of another race came by. He got down from his beast, decided
not to be compassionate by proxy. But he got down with him,
administered first aid, and helped the man in need. Jesus ended up
saying this was the good man, this was the great man because he
had the capacity to project the "I" into the "thou," and to be
concerned about his brother.
Now, you know, we use our imagination a great deal to try to determine why the priest and the
Levite didn't stop. At times we say they were busy going to a church meeting, an ecclesiastical
gathering, and they had to get on down to Jerusalem so they wouldn't be late for their meeting. At
other times we would speculate that there was a religious law that one who was engaged in religious
ceremonials was not to touch a human body twenty-four hours before the ceremony. And every now
and then we begin to wonder whether maybe they were not going down to Jerusalem, or down to
Jericho, rather, to organize a Jericho Road Improvement Association. That's a possibility. Maybe they
felt it was better to deal with the problem from the causal root, rather than to get bogged down with
an individual effect.
But I'm going to tell you what my imagination tells me. It's possible that those men were afraid. You
see, the Jericho Road is a dangerous road. I remember when Mrs. King and I were first in Jerusalem.
We rented a car and drove from Jerusalem down to Jericho. And as soon as we got on that road I
said to my wife, "I can see why Jesus used this as the setting for his parable." It's a winding,
meandering road. It's really conducive for ambushing. You start out in Jerusalem, which is about
twelve hundred miles, or rather, twelve hundred feet above sea level. And by the time you get down
to Jericho fifteen or twenty minutes later, you're about twenty-two feet below sea level. That's a
dangerous road. In the days of Jesus it came to be known as the "Bloody Pass." And you know, it's
possible that the priest and the Levite looked over that man on the ground and wondered if the
robbers were still around. Or it's possible that they felt that the man on the ground was merely
faking, and he was acting like he had been robbed and hurt in order to seize them over there, lure
them there for quick and easy seizure. And so the first question that the priest asked, the first
question that the Levite asked was, "If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?"
But then the Good Samaritan came by, and he reversed
the question: "If I do not stop to help this man, what
will happen to him?" That's the question before you
tonight. (Yes) Not, "If I stop to help the sanitation
workers, what will happen to my job?" Not, "If I stop to
help the sanitation workers, what will happen to all of
the hours that I usually spend in my office every day
and every week as a pastor?" (Yes) The question is not,
"If I stop to help this man in need, what will happen to
me?" The question is, "If I do not stop to help the
sanitation workers, what will happen to them?" That's
the question.
Let us rise up tonight with a greater readiness. Let us stand with a greater determination. And let us
move on in these powerful days, these days of challenge, to make America what it ought to be. We
have an opportunity to make America a better nation. Amen!
BISHOP MURPHY ON THE PASSING OF
NYPD DETECTIVE STEVEN MCDONALD
(1 March 1957 – 11 January 2017)
The death of Steven McDonald is a moment for us all to
stop, reflect and pray. We should stop to remember a
brave young police officer who did what all our
neighbors in blue, women and men, do every day for
our communities, for the safety of all of us and for the
good of our society. We should reflect on their lives
that continue the brave and inspiring legacy of my
friend Steve. We should pray for him, his wife Patti and
their son and family.
For me personally, I recall Cardinal O’Connor telling me
about Steve whom the Cardinal considered a saint who
forgave his assailant and made his life a living icon of
the forgiving and giving life of Jesus. Now after fifteen years here in Rockville Centre, I'm grateful
to a God for my friend at the 11:00 A.M. Mass in Saint Agnes Cathedral, the leader who invited me
to take part in his Men's prayer group and who, with Patti, lived such a full and love-filled life these
many years.
Only they know what the struggles may have been. But thanks to them we have known a family
that witnessed that life is beautiful and a gift of God to be cherished, protected and defended till
God calls us home.
May Steve Rest in Peace and may we find courage and care for one another from his example.
NOW A WORD FROM OUR SAINTS
From a sermon on the Trinity by Saint Hilary, Bishop
May I Serve You by Making You Known
I am well aware, almighty God and Father, that in my life I owe You
a most particular duty. It is to make my every thought and word
speak of You.
In fact, You have conferred on me this gift of speech, and it can yield
no greater return than to be at Your service. It is for making You
known as Father, the Father of the only-begotten God, and
preaching this to the world that knows You not and to the heretics
who refuse to believe in You.
In this matter the declaration of my intention is only of limited value
for the rest, I need to pray for the gift of Your help and Your mercy.
As we spread our sails of trusting faith and public avowal before
You, fill them with the breath of Your Spirit, to drive us on as we
begin this course of proclaiming Your truth. We have been
promised, and he who made the promise is trustworthy: Ask, and it
will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
Yes, in our poverty we will pray for our needs. We will study the sayings of Your prophets and
apostles with unflagging attention, and knock for admittance wherever the gift of understanding is
safely kept. But Yours it is, Lord, to grant our petitions, to be present when we seek You and to open
when we knock.
There is an inertia in our nature that makes us dull; and in our attempt to penetrate Your truth we are
held within the bounds of ignorance by the weakness of our minds. Yet we do comprehend divine
ideas by earnest attention to Your teaching and by obedience to the faith which carries us beyond
mere human apprehension.
So we trust in You to inspire the beginnings of this ambitious venture, to strengthen its progress, and
to call us into a partnership in the spirit with the prophets and the apostles. To that end, may we
grasp precisely what they meant to say, taking each word in its real and authentic sense. For we are
about to say what they already have declared as part of the mystery of revelation: that You are the
eternal God, the Father of the eternal, only-begotten God; that You are one and not born from
another; and that the Lord Jesus is also one, born of You from all eternity. We must not proclaim a
change in truth regarding the number of gods. must not deny that He is begotten of You who are the
one God; nor must we assert that He is other than the true God, born of You Who are truly God the
Father.
Impart to us, then, the meaning of the words of Scripture and the light to understand it, with
reverence for the doctrine and confidence in its truth. Grant that we may express what we believe.
Through the prophets and apostles we know about You, the one God the Father, and the one Lord
Jesus Christ. May we have the grace, in the face of heretics who deny You, to honour You as God,
Who is not alone, and to proclaim this as truth.
NOW A WORD FROM SAINT BASIL THE GREAT
The Ability to Love is Within Each of Us
Love of God is not something that can be taught. We did not
learn from someone else how to rejoice in light or want to live,
or to love our parents or guardians. It is the same—perhaps
even more so—with our love for God: it does not come by
another’s teaching. As soon as the living creature (that is, man)
comes to be, a power of reason is implanted in us like a seed,
containing within it the ability and the need to love. When the
school of God’s law admits this power of reason, it cultivates it
diligently, skillfully nurtures it, and with God’s help brings it to
perfection.
For this reason, as by God’s gift, I find you with the zeal
necessary to attain this end, and you on your part help me with
your prayers. I will try to fan into flame the spark of Divine love
that is hidden within you, as far as I am able through the power
of the Holy Spirit.
First, let me say that we have already received from God the ability to fulfill all His commands. We
have then no reason to resent them, as if something beyond our capacity were being asked of us.
We have no reason either to be angry, as if we had to pay back more than we had received. When
we use this ability in a right and fitting way, we lead a life of virtue and holiness. But if we misuse
it, we fall into sin.
This is the definition of sin: the misuse of powers given us by God for doing good, a use contrary to
God’s commands. On the other hand, the virtue that God asks of us is the use of the same powers
based on a good conscience in accordance with God’s command.
Since this is so, we can say the same about love. Since we received a command to love God, we
possess from the first moment of our existence an innate power and ability to love. The proof of
this is not to be sought outside ourselves, but each one can learn this from himself and in himself.
It is natural for us to want things that are good and pleasing to the eye, even though at first
different things seem beautiful and good to different people. In the same way, we love what is
related to us or near to us, though we have not been taught to do so, and we spontaneously feel
well disposed to our benefactors.
What, I ask, is more wonderful than the beauty of God? What thought is more pleasing and
wonderful than God’s majesty? What desire is as urgent and overpowering as the desire implanted
by God in a soul that is completely purified of sin and cries out in its love: I am wounded by love?
The radiance of Divine beauty is altogether beyond the power of words to describe.
ATTENTION ANYONE AND EVERYONE WHO ATTENDED CLASSES
AT OUR HOLY REDEEMER SCHOOL
IN FREEPORT, NEW YORK
You may or may not be aware that the school where many of
you were asked: "Who made you?" (To which we replied: "God
made me."), closed its doors in 1995. And while the doors to
Our Holy Redeemer School may have closed, the doors of the
Our Holy Redeemer School building continue (as many of you
found out at a recent reunion on 18 September 2016) to remain
open.
The cost of maintaining and repairing those doors has thankfully
never necessitated a "capital campaign" or a "special
collection". More often than not, all it took when something needed fixing or replacing (locks, door
closers, hinges, door knobs), was a trip to the local hardware store. And thankfully, those trips have
helped to keep the doors opening (and closing) for nearly one hundred years!
Today, it’s not the doors, nor the gymnasium floor for that matter that needs replacing. At one time the
need did to replace that floor did exist, but with help from a substantial financial contribution from our
school building's tenant (The De La Salle School www.delasalleschool.org), it was replaced in 2013 at a
cost of $70,686.00. What needs replacing in our school-building today, is what rests above the
gymnasium floor (and all of the floors). You guessed it: the roof.
The estimated cost for replacing the entire roof (which protects the offices and occupants of Our Holy
Redeemer Human Services/Parish Outreach as well as the students of Our Holy Redeemer Religious
Education Program and the De La Salle School) is $243,065.00. To-date, parishioners and friends of Our
Holy Redeemer Parish have surfaced $16,499.25 towards the five-phase project, which is being used to
help cover the $28,875.00 cost of Phase I (Flat Roof South Side) which had to get underway in October
because it could no longer be scraped, screened, patched, and plugged. Once we have raised 75% of that
cost ($21,656.25), work on Phase II (East Side) can get underway.
If you are grateful for the contribution that Our Holy Redeemer School and/or Our Holy Redeemer School
building played/plays in your life, would you please consider using the tear-off on the following page to
make a contribution to our
project? Your contribution will
help to ensure that the many
good things God has begun in
that building will come to
completion. And in light of the
Christmas
Season,
your
contribution will help provide
“room in the Inn” for anyone
and everyone who comes home
looking for it! Thank you and:
Blessed New Year!

AND THE
MERRICK CAR WASH
(1820 SUNRISE HIGHWAY)
You read about the Spirit of Generosity that moved the Father to send the Christ into the world 2016 years
ago, well now read this: that same Spirit has inspired the owner of the Merrick Car Wash (a parishioner of
Our Holy Redeemer) located at 1820 Sunrise Highway to provide the bearers of this bulletin page with
$3.00 off of their car wash. Not only that, a percentage of that sale – in fact a percentage of EVERY sale –
will be sent to Our Holy Redeemer!
Please cut and use the coupon (expire 30 March 2017) below for your next three visits! Make sure you tell

EIGHT DAYS OF PRAYER
FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY
(18 January 2017 – 25 January 2017)
Day I: Let the Stone be Rolled Away - Lord Jesus, You have always loved us from the beginning, and You have
shown the depth of Your love in dying for us on the Cross and thereby sharing our sufferings and wounds. At this moment,
we lay all the obstacles that separate us from Your love at the foot of Your Cross. Roll back the stones which imprison us.
Awaken us to Your Resurrection morning. There may we meet the brothers and sisters from whom we are separated.
Amen.
Day II: Called to be Messengers of Joy - God of love, look upon our willingness to serve You despite our spiritual
poverty and limited abilities. Fulfill the deepest longings of our hearts with Your presence. Fill our broken hearts with Your
healing love so that we may love as You have loved us. Grant us the gift of unity so that we may serve You with joy and
share Your love with all. This we ask in the name of Your Son Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Day III: The Witness of Fellowship - Lord Jesus, Who prayed that we might all be one, we pray to You for the unity of
Christians according to Your will, according to Your means. May Your Spirit enable us to experience the suffering caused
by division, to see our sin and to hope beyond all hope. Amen.
Day IV: A Priestly People Called to Proclaim the Gospel - Lord Jesus, You said that everyone will know that we
are Your disciples if there is love among us. Strengthened by Your grace, may we work tirelessly for the visible unity of
Your Church, so that the Good News that we are called to proclaim will be seen in all our words and deeds. Amen.
Day V: The Fellowship of the Apostles - God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may You give to all
Christians, and especially to those entrusted with leadership in Your Church, the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that with
the eyes of our hearts we may see the hope to which You have called us: one body and one Spirit, one Lord, one faith, one
baptism, one God and Father of all, Who is above and through all and in all. Amen.
Day VI: Listen to this Dream - Heavenly Father, grant us humility to hear Your voice, to receive Your call, and to share
Your dream for the unity of the Church. Help us to be awake to the pain of disunity. Where division has left us with hearts
of stone, may the fire of Your Holy Spirit inflame our hearts and inspire us with the vision of being one in Christ, as He is one
with You, so that the world may believe that You have sent Him. This we ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
Day VII: Hospitality for Prayer - Lord Jesus, You asked Your Apostles to stay awake with You and to pray with You.
May we offer the world protected times and spaces in which to find refreshment and peace, so that praying together with
other Christians we may come to know You more deeply. Amen.
Day VIII: Hearts Burning for Unity - Lord Jesus, You have made our hearts burn within us, and have sent us back
upon the road towards our brothers and sisters, with the Gospel message on our lips. Help us to see that hope and
obedience to Your commands always lead to the greater unity of Your people. Amen.

TREASURE FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT
PUT YOUR TRUST IN GOD ALONE
(Sirach XI:12-28)
Another goes his way a weakling and a failure,
with little strength and great misery—
Yet the eyes of the Lord look favourably upon him;
He raises him free of the vile dust,
Lifts up his head and exalts him to
the amazement of the many.
Good and evil, life and death,
poverty and riches, are from the Lord.
Wisdom and understanding and knowledge of affairs,
love and virtuous paths are from the Lord.
Error and darkness were formed with sinners from their birth,
and evil grows old with evildoers.
The Lord’s gift remains with the just;
His favor brings continued success.
A man may become rich through a miser’s life,
and this is his allotted reward:
When he says: “I have found rest,
now I will feast on my possessions,”
He does not know how long it will be
till he dies and leaves them to others.
My son, hold fast to your duty, busy yourself with it,
grow old while doing your task.
Admire not how sinners live,
but trust in the Lord and wait for His light;
For it is easy with the Lord
suddenly, in an instant, to make a poor man rich.
God’s blessing is the lot of the just man,
and in due time his hopes bear fruit.
Say not: “What do I need?
What further pleasure can be mine?”
Say not: “I am independent.
What harm can come to me now?”
The day of prosperity makes one forget adversity;
the day of adversity makes one forget prosperity.
For it is easy with the Lord on the day of death
to repay man according to his deeds.
A moment’s affliction brings forgetfulness of past delights;
when a man dies, his life is revealed.
Call no man happy before his death,
for by how he ends, a man is known.

What do you do when inclement weather or sickness
prevents you from attending Sunday Mass at Our
Holy Redeemer, or family/business obligations take
you to Sunday Mass somewhere other than Our Holy
Redeemer? More than likely, if you use Parish
Envelopes to make your offering, you will place “Sunday-missed” envelopes in the Offertory
basket the next time you attend Mass. If you don’t use envelopes, it is more than likely that
your Sunday-missed offering will remain missing. It is not that you intentionally choose to give Our Holy Redeemer
less, it’s just hard to intentionally give to Our Holy Redeemer what you think is more. “Stop thinking”; use envelopes
or use E-Giving! E-Giving, like Offertory Envelopes (thank you for using them) provides you
with a way of exercising faithful stewardship even when inclement weather or sickness
prevents you from attending Sunday Mass at Our Holy Redeemer, or when family/business
obligations take you to Sunday Mass somewhere other than Our Holy Redeemer.
For more information about E-Giving either call the Rectory or visit the secure web site at
www.e-giving.org.
 A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR 
“A $5,000.00 Shortfall because of the Snowfall”
Magi from the east came home for Mass last Sunday (8 January 2017) and paid homage to Our Holy
Redeemer by opening their treasures and offering Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. As
you can see from the table below, last Saturday’s (7 January 2017) snowfall prevented many of you
from doing the same. If you’re one of those people, and would like to help us make up for the
shortfall that resulted because of the snowfall, please consider doing so next Sunday.

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” (See John 1:29-34) The words of
John the Baptist quoted in today’s Gospel are part of the Holy Mass. Just before we receive
communion the presiding priest elevates the chalice and the host and recites the above words,
adding, “Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.” We the people reply with the
acclamation: “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word
and my soul shall be healed.” We are the happy people, the blessed people, the people that have
been invited to the Lamb’s supper. We should live lives of holiness because Jesus, “the Lamb of
God, who takes away the sin of the world,” has taken away our sins. Although we are not worthy to
receive Him, He says the word, and as a result you and I are healed. The good news of this Sunday’s
Gospel is that Jesus is not meager with the benefits of His sacrifice. He applies it to all those willing
to receive Him. He takes away the sin of the world. Therefore, we should do our best to work out
our own salvation and not only ours, but that of those we call family and neighbor. Let them know,
by our deeds and words that we believe that Jesus is the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.

BEHOLD THE
LAMB OF GOD!
John the Baptist saw Jesus
coming toward him and said,
"Behold, the Lamb of God, Who
takes away the sin of the
world. He is the One of Whom
I said, 'A man is coming after
me who ranks ahead of me
because He existed before me.
'I did not know Him, but the
reason why I came baptizing
with water was that He might
be made known to Israel."
John testified further, saying,
"I saw the Spirit come down
like a dove from Heaven and
remain upon Him. I did not
know Him, but the one who
sent me to baptize with water
told me, 'On whomever you see
the Spirit come down and
remain, He is the One who will
baptize with the Holy Spirit.
'Now I have seen and testified
that He is the Son of God."
