Eleven years ago he lived with us for a year, as a seminarian for our diocese. Good-natured, goodhearted, outgoing—he had wonderful qualities for a future parish priest. In the end he returned to Mexico and was ordained for the Pacific Coast diocese of Ensenada. After a niece’s wedding in Southern California, I took the opportunity to visit him down below the border. At 35 Fr. Carlos has 40 years fewer than I, but he is already an experienced and proven pastor, with diocesan responsibilities also. His parish, Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, in Maneadero, has 20,000 people, 90% Catholic. The two priests offer weekend Mass in nine locations; 600 children are in religious education; 235 made First Holy Communion, and they average ten baptisms a week. He has it well organized, and is out much among the people. It’s a joy to see a young priest whom I lived with become a good shepherd. It’s a joy, too, seeing how much he remembers St. Catherine’s, both English and Spanish. It’s affirming for all of us when he says he learned much at SCS about “how to be a pastor down here.” ‘The young have time and the old have money…’ So this Elder will send to the Younger Man a little donation—to help build their Parish Center with a hall and classrooms. I’ve seen the need and the plans...nothing could give me more pleasure! This week we celebrate Thanksgiving. One of the keenest gratitudes we can have—and I feel it right now—is for having been able to participate in the development and competence of another person. I know many of you understand—let’s give thanks! Father John Hynes Page 3 Mark your calendars: BREAKFAST IN BETHLEHEM is coming soon! Saturday, December 6, from 9:30 to 11 in the Martin Center. Experience what Christmas is really about – hear and see the story of Jesus’ birth, meet some real shepherds with their sheep, enjoy muffins and hot chocolate, play games, and make gifts for the people you love! There is no charge, but please RSVP so we have enough supplies for everyone. Volunteers are needed and welcome, call Eva, 633-4903. EMMANUEL DINING ROOM We will be serving Shepherd Pies at the EDR on Friday the 28th ( black Friday ). Please consider preparing your Shepherd Pie early in the week due to the Thanksgiving Holiday. Return to the gathering space by 9:30am NOT FROZEN. Also, we are accepting old kitchen towels to be used at the EDR. Thank you again for caring for the poor in our community. The GUADALUPE NOVENA will begin in homes of our parish on December 4. Each evening through December 11 groups of fellow parishioners will meet at 7PM to recite the Rosary, sing, hear scripture and pray for the community. A little repast follows (e.g., hot chocolate and buns). Some of the meetings will be bi-lingual in Spanish and English. Would you like to take part? To join in, call our Christian Formation Office, 633-4903, or sign up at the table in the Gathering Space. HAPPY 7Oth ANNIVERSARY to WALT and KATHERINE CHRISTIAN! Walt and Katherine were married in Henderson KY on Nov. 11, 1944 after having known each other only three months. They moved to Delaware after the war, had 3 sons, 5 grandchildren and 2 greatgrandchildren, so far. They were very involved in St. Catherine Parish right from the beginning with masses in the fire hall and school at New Castle Airbase. Walt, like his son Larry today, was a big help then to our founding pastor, Father Lutz, in maintaining our grounds and facilities. Walt and Katherine have lived in the same house for 65 years; they worked, retired and spent summers at Indian River Bay. They now pretty much stay at home, enjoy visits from family and friends, count down the days until spring training, then cheer on their beloved Phillies. Their advice for a long and happy marriage: “Do not have serious arguments.” (We will analyze this statement and convey its application to our current engaged couples.) November 23, 2014 JESSE TREE Once again during advent we will have our Jesse Tree. In the past, St. Catherine’s parishioners have given generously to those in need. Last year we helped 28 families as they struggled with difficult circumstances during the holiday season. Those involved behind the scenes of this ministry have always taken this responsibility very seriously and striven to make sure that your donations of gifts and rental assistance have gone where they are truly needed. Interviews, home visits, documentation from landlords, conversations with utility companies and more are all a part of the work leading up the appearance of our Jesse Tree on Saturday, November 22. Most of the tags on the tree will be for the necessities of life—things like food certificates, requests for electric assistance, gas cards, department store certificates, and drug store certificates to help with medical needs. There will be a limited number of tags for clothing, household items and perhaps a few special wishes. We ask that you pray for those families that we will be helping this year through our Jesse Tree project; and we sincerely hope that you will give to those in need whatever you can share, knowing that your donations will continue to be handled responsibly. Many tags will have no dollar amount specified—no gift is too small or too large. We cannot possibly help every person who will walk through the door asking for help from now until Christmas, but with your generosity, we will reach out to as many as we can. The tree will go up on the 22nd of November and we ask that you return your gifts by the weekend of December 6th and 7th, or to the Pastoral Center by December 12th. If you have any questions, please contact Linda Micucio at (302)239-7584. God bless you. One act of thanksgiving, when things go wrong with us, is worth a thousand thanks when things are agreeable to our inclinations. —Saint John of Ávila Page 4 We would like to remind our parishioners that because of new privacy regulations, we must rely on you to let us know when you or family members are hospitalized. Please call the Parish Office to inform us. Thank you. Lidia Castellani Kevin Collas Valerie Collas Irene Hudacko Greg Sarnecki Richard Slivocka We also remember all our parishioners who are serving in our Armed Forces (although we do not have their names, we remember them in prayer). Please Note: Names of the sick will be listed in the Prayer of the Faithful for two weeks then removed. If there is a need to repeat them, please call the Parish Office. Happy Thanksgiving from All Saints Catholic School! We give thanks for all of our students, families, and parishioners like you for your support of All Saints. On Tuesday, October 28 the All Saints Catholic School community raised $500 for Breast Cancer. All of the money that we collected will be going to the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition. Our gift will help serve breast cancer patients, survivors, families, and friends right here in our community. Student Council would like to thank all the students, teachers, and parents who contributed to the donations. It’s not too early to begin thinking about next school year! Our Early Childhood classrooms begin to fill up quickly. We currently have a waiting list for our PreK-3 Program for this current year. School Tours are available at any time if you are interested in any of our programs. All Saints is a Pre-K (ages 3 and 4) through Grade 8 school.
