It is when the Catholic Church commemorates every saint, known and unknown. While we have information about many saints, and we honor them on specific days, there are many unknown or unsung saints. On All Saints Day, we celebrate these holy men and women and ask for their prayers and intercessions. This day is connected to the doctrine of “The Communion of Saints” - that all of God’s people, whether in heaven, on earth or in Purgatory, are spiritually connected and united. “The saints are the sinners who keep on trying.” – Robert Louis Stevenson. As we remember these wonderful people, let us also be reminded of our own call to sanctity. Tom stood staring at the letters R.I.P. on his grandfather’s gravestone. “Rest in peace, Grampa.” He wanted nothing more for this beleaguered old man. Grampa had seen so much hardship and was always good to Tom. But would he rest in peace? His love for the bottle was well known. No one had ever seen him in church. Tom just couldn’t shake his fears about the fate of his grandfather’s immortal soul. Today’s feast gathers up all our hopes and fears about the eternal destiny of our loved ones. We may hope that their faith and love will be rewarded. We may be relieved that their suffering is over, or afraid they did not merit heaven. For all these reasons we pray: “Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.” —Virginia Stillwell Copyright © 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Mass of Remembrance A Mass will be offered at 7:00 pm on Friday, November 7, to remember and pray for all parishioners who have died the past year. Following the Mass there will be time to greet and support the families. We ask for eyes that are free from blindness so that we might see each other as brothers and sisters, one in equality and dignity, especially those who are victims of abuse and violence, deceit and poverty. We ask for ears that will hear the cries of children unborn and those abandoned, men and women oppressed because of race or creed, religion or gender. We ask for minds and hearts that are open to hearing the voice of leaders who will bring us closer to your Kingdom. We pray for discernment, so that we may choose leaders who hear your Word, live your love, and keep in the ways of your truth as they follow in the steps of Jesus and His Apostles and guide us to your Kingdom of justice and peace. We ask this in the name of your Son Jesus Christ and through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. So often we only think of priesthood and religious life when we think of vocations. But we must remember that marriage and consecrated single life are also vocations or callings from God. Often we ask the question, “What do I want to do with my life?” I would encourage us to change that question to “What does God want me to do with my life?” It is a subtle difference. However, it is when we follow the will of God in our lives that we find true fulfillment, we become who God truly has called us to be, and we fulfill the Lord’s mission in the world by building up the Kingdom of heaven on earth. In our baptism we become sons and daughters of God. We also receive the Holy Spirit and the seeds of our vocation. Each vocation has a few things in common, regardless of whether you are a priest, deacon, religious, married or single: Please pray the following prayer with me each day that each one of us follows the Lord’s call.
