Two weeks ago, I spoke about stewardship
being a step in your journey as a disciple of
Jesus. We use our time, talent and treasure as
the way we express our growing relationship
with the Lord. I hope you have been praying
about where God is leading you in each of these
areas.
I ask that you take 1, 2 or all 3 of the
stewardship steps.
Spend time in prayer with God - join us for
a daily Mass, confession or a CRHP
retreat.
Come to the Ministry Night Cocktail Social
on November 9th to learn more about
ways to get involved to share your
talents.
Turn in your pledge cards of time, talent and treasure. This allows the
Cathedral to plan and work towards meeting our offertory goal of more
than $7 million dollars.
Thank you in advance for your participation in these important efforts. Please
continue to pray for our Cathedral parish and all of our ministries. God bless you
and your family.
In Christ,
Monsignor Mac

Stewardship of Treasure
Thanks to the lesson of Zacchaeus, we learn even more about how to seek stewardship.
Like the tax collector we need to make an effort to seek Jesus; like him we must be
humble; we must welcome Jesus into our homes and into our hearts; and finally we
need to receive him joyfully.

The Gift of
our Talent
U s ing my ta lents in paris h minis trie s ...
Our talents are our God-given abilities to consistently do
things well. Our talents allow us to be Christ’s hands and
s t e w a r d s h i p

feet, continuing His healing, feeding, teaching, and saving
ministries in our world today.
Each of us has a talent to use to serve others as Jesus did. After
His crucifixion, Jesus appeared to some disciples on the road to
Emmaus. [Luke 24:20] He helped comfort those disciples as they
dealt with the pain of losing Jesus and made sense of the scriptures
for them. If you are able to listen and journey with someone as
they come to understand their faith or make sense of a life event,
consider serving as a RCIA sponsor or Stephen Minister.

STEWARDSHIP is our way of saying thank you to
God for all the gifts He has given us. Everything
we have – our TIME, TALENT and TREASURE
– has been entrusted to us by the Lord to help
ourselves and others grow as Jesus’ disciples. Jesus,
Who is the Way, the Truth and the Light, gives us
examples of how to be good stewards of our gifts.
The Gift of
our Time
Spe ndi n g ti me w i th G od in Pra yer...
We thank God for the time He has given us by
putting Him and our spiritual priorities first in
our lives. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus asked
His disciples to spend one hour in prayer with Him.
[Matthew 20:19] Carve out time in your day to nurture
your relationship with God. Start your day by saying good
morning to Jesus. Consider spending an hour with Jesus
each week as an Adoration Guardian. Attend a Daily Mass
or read the Mass readings each day. As our Blessed Mother
reminds us, “do whatever He tells you.” [John 2:5] Any
additional time you can spend with God in prayer will help
you to know, love and serve God the Father as Jesus did.
°

Attend weekday Mass at least once a week
Spend 15 minutes a day in personal prayer
Pray together with your loved ones
Go to confession every other month
Schedule time for a retreat
Jesus invited Nathaniel to “come and see” [John 1:5] where
He lived and join Him as a disciple. If you are able to smile,
say hello and invite someone to join you at an event, consider
greeting visitors at Mass, making welcome calls and sending
emails to new parishioners, or writing bulletin announcements
for a ministry. We all have talents we can use to serve others as
Jesus did. Explore new ways to do the things you do well to
renew our parish.
The Gift of
our Treasure
Mak ing a cons is tent gift to th e O fferto ry...
Our treasure is a way for us to imitate Jesus’ generous love.
When we give generously, we place our trust in God’s plan for
our lives. The Bible speaks of the tithe, putting 10% of one’s
material wealth in service to God. [Deut 12:6-7] With whatever
the amount you begin, you are trusting God to care for you and
others. It is through our generosity that we are able to bring God’s
love to others in real, tangible ways.
Just as everyone has at least one talent to use in the Lord’s
service, we all have some treasure to share to make the love
of God real and tangible. Jesus told the parable of the widow’s
mite. She gave very little but it was from her need. She
exemplified the radical generous love of Jesus. Start giving at
any amount and increase it each year. Trust God with your
finances. Your treasure, no matter the amount, is one gift
coupled with many others, that makes our mission to know,
love and serve as Jesus did active. In Thanksgiving for God’s
gifts, each household at CTK is asked to budget a generous gift
to the offertory in proportion to your income.
The scriptural ideal is the tithe of 10% of your income. [Genesis
14:20] This chart is provided to help you determine a proportionate
commitment of your Treasure. Some people begin at the 10% level,
others start at 2% or 3% then increase their commitment each year.
The amount of one’s treasure commitment.
5% to CTK + 1% to the Archdiocese + 4% to charity
If you feel unable to commit to the full 5% at this time, try to
increase your current level by one to two percent of income
until you reach your goal.
The pledge of Talent...
All talents are useful and no talent is too small to be used to
help others to know, love and serve the Father as Jesus did. I

THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
OCTOBER 30, 2016
Today we are treated to that engaging story of the tax collector Zacchaeus
and what he went through to see, to meet, and to engage Jesus. This entire
contemplation could focus on that story and all of its implications, but it is
supported by the other readings as well.
The Book of Wisdom, from which we have our First Reading, is normally
divided into two parts. The first part extols the benefits and value of wisdom (the first nine chapters), and the second part speaks to the historical
nature of wisdom (the last 10 chapters). Our reading today is taken from
the history portion. Sometimes it is a challenge to “cut through” the language and the style and glean what is most important for us to understand.
In today’s reading there is one simple phrase that might be cited as significant to us, and particularly noteworthy if we think of it in the context of
stewardship. That is the simple phrase “…you spare all things because they
are yours.” Over and over in Holy Scripture we are reminded that all things
come from God and all things are God’s. That, of course, is at the crux of
stewardship, our recognition and acceptance that God is at the center of all
because all we have all we are is God’s in the first place.
St. Paul wrote two letters to the Thessalonians. Thessalonica is a city in
northern Greece. In addition, there are 13 verses from the Acts of the Apostles devoted to the Thessalonians. The earliest of the New Testament books
after James (chronologically-speaking) is St. Paul’s First Letter to the Thessalonians, from whence our Second Reading comes. Paul speaks often in this Book about the Second Coming of Christ, and this particular passage is no exception.
At the final sentence of today’s Second Reading, St. Paul makes reference to the fact that the “…day of the Lord is at hand.” This is
probably what was troubling the Thessalonians, not that Christ’s Second Coming was imminent, but that they were already in the
midst of it. Their concern was whether they were prepared. In a sense that should be a concern for all of us. Jesus certainly reminds
us often that we should be concerned with that. Are we ready? Are we ready each day, each hour, and each minute for that matter?
We need to be.
And now we get to the Gospel and to Zacchaeus. It is a story that is familiar to almost all of us. Here is this poor man, an admitted
sinner, who hears that Jesus Christ is approaching. Zacchaeus has a desire to be saved. He understands that Jesus is the road to that
salvation. He feels he must take advantage of the situation presented to him. When Jesus sees Zacchaeus in the tree as He passes, He
knows him and He calls him by name: “Zacchaeus, come down quickly.” We must always remember that Jesus knows each of us
also, and He knows us by name. That is one of the glories of the Kingdom. Our acknowledgment of that by striving to be His disciple is important,
Although the sense of the story is that Zacchaeus sought and pursued Jesus, the truth was that Jesus was seeking Zacchaeus. The
Lord seeks us in the same way, but are we as prepared as the tax collector was to respond? Zacchaeus responds with haste; if he had
not reacted in such a prompt way, the Lord may have moved on. We cannot afford to risk that same thing. Jesus is calling us by
name every day. Are we equally prepared to respond “with haste?” Then Zacchaeus had to “receive” Jesus — that is, invite Jesus into
his life. That is exactly what each of us needs to do. It is not easy because, like Zacchaeus, it may produce embarrassment and misunderstanding. However, with the help and constant presence of the Lord, we can overcome all of that.

WELCOME FROM THE PASTOR AND CATHEDRAL
COMMUNITY
Dear Friends in Christ,
Welcome! On behalf of Archbishop Wilton Gregory, the Clergy,
the staff, and the whole Cathedral community, I welcome you to
the Cathedral of Christ the King. I pray that as you step into the

join us and become part of this wonderful community. If you are
just visiting, it is a blessing to have you here and thank you for
worshiping with us. We hope you will come again.
