From the Pastor’s Pen
Holy Land God Moments
Our Borromeo group of 14 were blessed to
make a very prayerful pilgrimage to the Holy land
this month. We were led by Franciscan Father David
Wather, who has spent most of his life there and is
joyful, knowledgeable and spiritual.
We found it moving to be in all the places
of Jesus’ life, death & resurrection, and we all
felt closer to Jesus, our Lord. We celebrated Mass
daily which were the highest God moments for us:
 Where Mary said YES to God’s incarnation in
Nazareth.
 Where Jesus was born in Bethlehem
 Where Jesus was Transfigured on Mt. Tabor
 Where Jesus suffered agony in Gethsemanes
 Where Jesus was Condemned to Death in Jerusalem
 Where Jesus Died for us on Calvary
 Where Jesus Rose from the dead at the Holy
Sepulcher
 Where Jesus commissioned Peter to love Him &
 Feed His Sheep at the Sea of Galilee

We also felt our Lord’s presence/ love at
Cana, as our married couples renewed their vows and
at Capernaum, where he lived in Peter’s house and
prayed in the Synagogue for three years and fed
5000 and healed many.
I was especially moved when touching the
rock of Calvary, where Jesus died for us. During
Mass, I felt sadness for all who like Mary, have
lost children and loved ones as well as all around
the world, who were innocent, but oppressed, tortured and killed including our not yet born babies.
This mood was suddenly transferred to Joy &
Hope as I entered Jesus’ tomb, where He Rose from
the dead. “With God, all things are possible”.
Jesus is alive and with us all wherever we are!
continued next column top….
Touching these holy rocks was so moving, but Jesus in His Divine Wisdom/genius comes to each of
us in the Holy Mass, as we hear His Word and join
in His Sacrifice and touch God, our Lord in Holy
Communion.
I also met Jesus in our fellow pilgrims
who were a joy to journey with and in the Palestinian Christians who hosted us for lunch and
other there who are working together for peace,
and to bring about an end to violence, injustice,
and oppression in Israel and Palestine and here.
Campaign Prayer
God our Father, in this moment of need, we place ourselves with confidence in Your holy presence. We thank
You that in Baptism, You made us Your children, redeemed by Jesus Your Son and united to Him and one
another. Guide us with the Holy Spirit and deepen our
faith we have inherited from past generations. May our
efforts be worthy of their mercy.
Grant, Lord that the Beyond Sunday campaign will
through support of Catholic education and the parishes of
of our Archdiocese, bring us Your people to new depths
of knowledge and love for You. May this campaign be a
source of new strength to those in need of healing in our
civic community, of vitality in families, of development
for parishes and neighborhoods.
May all who promote this campaign by their prayers,
sacrifices, and labor be granted a special share in that
communion of love that is Yours with Jesus Your Son and
Holy Spirit. We ask this in Jesus’ name.
30th Sunday in Ordinary Time, October 23, 2016
October 23, 2016 is World Missionary Sunday.
In announcing his decision to declare a Holy Year of Mercy, Pope Francis said,” Dear brothers and sisters, I have often thought
about how the Church might make clear it mission of being a witness to mercy.” Supporting the young churches throughout the
world with your prayers and generous gifts is indeed a merciful witness of this mission. The collection for World Mission Sunday
will help missionaries offer the poor of these areas practical help as they share the mercy of God. It will ensure the development
of local dioceses, and support the work of priests, religious and lay leaders who serve those on the
margins and in most need. Extend your merciful witness to the whole world through your gift in
today’s collection for the Society of the Propagation of the Faith.
Lets' support Father Bob Menner’s work in the Mission Office.

Giving Tree 2016 Announcement
Giving Tree is the parish's St. Vincent DePaul's effort to help make Christmas special for families in need within our parish boundaries/
in our local community.
Everyone can participate! Here's how it works and how you can help:
* REFER: Families who live in our area are referred by school personnel, parishioners, or self referred
and must demonstrate that they are a family in crisis/need by SVDP.
* DONATE: In November, St. Charles Borromeo classes hold their annual Food Drive. Food items
gathered by classes become our Christmas food baskets. There is enough to provide multiple meals for
the holiday season.
* ADOPT A FAMILY: Families, friends and coworkers adopt a full family unit and spoil them with minimal gifts plus extra
special items. Contact Mary Medina if you are interested in adopting a full family. Any size family can be adopted.
* PICK ORNAMENTS: Giving Trees go up in the Narthex on November 11th , giving you an opportunity to choose items
(ornaments) off the tree to shop for and wrap. All wrapped gifts need to be returned to church no later than Dec. 4.
* SVDP and Mini Vinnies sort these packages and ready them for pick up on December 17th.
* DONATE: Some parishioners want to participate but are unable to shop for items! A check made out to SVDP and noted
for Giving Tree, is earmarked for meat purchased for meals; as well as, missing gift items.
Hope everyone will participate as we join together to brighten the Christmas season for those less fortunate in our community.Mary Medina (email: [email protected], phone 636-699-9427)

Congratulations to SCB Alumni, Maura Englehorn, Class
of 2013
Despite playing tennis for only one month before high
school, Maura Englehorn has achieved quite a feat. She
made the JV Tennis team for her Freshman year, and
played Varsity Tennis for the next three years.
Hard work, lots of practice and determination paid off
for Maura.
Recently, she and her doubles partner, Genna Miller
(playing for Incarnate Word Academy) were awarded the
3rd Place ribbon in the State Championship.
We are so proud of Maura and what she achieved. Congratulations from your SCB family.
Thank you God for the beautiful weather our schoolchildren
had on the day they went on a
history walking tour of former
sites of our Parish church.

While our "Christian" minds tell us to be sorry and
even pray for the person, a little voice inside our
heads may also be saying, "I'm glad I would never
do anything like that."
And perhaps we wouldn't. But are there some
things we do that are still not pleasing in God's
eyes? Today's readings caution us not to look so
intently at someone else's wrongdoing that we
overlook our own weaknesses and shortcomings.
When we measure ourselves against the worst
people we can think of, we come out looking pret-

Repentance
Repentance means more than saying ,”I’m Sorry: for
something you’ve done wrong. Saying, “I’m sorry”,
and meaning it is, of course, an important step. But real
“contrition” is about doing something that will make
amends for the consequences of the wrong itself. Once
we’re sorry for our sin, we have to resolve not to repeat the wrong and resolve to repair the wrong as
much as is possible.
Think about whether you might still need to make
amends for something– then go do it. (CCC1451-1454)

El Camino de
St. Charles Borromeo
1992 *** 1996
puente.

The St. Charles Borromeo
Journey
1992 *** 1996
With the conclusion of the Bicentennial, Fr. Tillman, and later Fr. Reiker, introduced many new
and exciting parish activities. Some have faded while others are vibrant and constitute the backbone of the current St. Charles Borromeo community. Starting in early 1992, Fr. Tillman began
the effort to serve the needs of our youth. Following the Gospel reading at the 8:30 Mass,
young children are escorted to the basement cafeteria for a simpler form of the “Word of God” under the direction
of our Parish School of Religion. They return at the conclusion of the homily. At the same time, the parish began its
“Adopt a Student” (now Help a Student) program. Parishioners without students, or whose children have moved
on, could now assist lower income families in providing their kids a Catholic education along with an award winning
academic program.
Processing through the community with the Blessed Sacrament on the Feast of Corpus Christi is a venerable Church
tradition. Fr. Bauer and members of the celebration committee put together the first Corpus Christi procession on
June 7, 1992. The weather was beautiful and attendance larger than expected. The celebration began at Frontier
Park with the Knights of Columbus serving as the honor guard and Borromeo Boy Scouts carrying a canopy over the
Blessed Sacrament. They processed through the city streets to St. Peter’s Church for the first benediction, then to Sacred Heart Academy for another benediction, and finally to Borromeo with a final benediction on the front steps of
the church. The distance covered was about one mile.
January 15, 1996, Fr. Tillman initiated a special Scriptural Service honoring the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Over 300 people attended the first service and represented various faiths. They joined keynote speakers Mayor John
Moeller, and Bishop Edward Braxton of the Belleville Diocese to represent a visible sign of support for the message of
Dr. King.
Borromeo began their fish fries on March 3, 1995. Joann and Vince Randazzo volunteered to organize the parish’s
first Fish Fry. With the help of many colleagues, they served 520 meals the very first Friday and began a tradition
that continues to serve the parish and the people of St. Charles today.
From April to October 1993, the great Missouri flood that hit St. Charles was among the most costly and devastating
ever to occur in the United States. After the flood receded, the need did not. To help flood victims, the Rev. Jerry
Jones and his wife Elaine of The Oasis of Love Fellowship Church, on 2140 North Fourth Street, opened a soup kitchen in the church basement. Assisted by volunteers, including St. Charles Borromeo’s St. Vincent de Paul Society, the
Joneses continued to work with the community poor by serving two meals a day to about 80 people, Monday
through Friday. In June of 2003, the Salvation Army bought the facility and still maintained the soup kitchen. St.
Charles Borromeo still supports their efforts in assisting the poor. Food donations come in from all over the area. A
typical lunch may consist of beef stew, green beans, and a huge roll. Before serving the meal, a recipient will say
grace.
Usually one of the frequent visitors, in this case a man
with down cast eyes, will lead the 30 or so diners in
prayer. Soon after lunch, as he leaves, his eyes will
begin to glaze over into an alcoholic stare. He lives in
a tent under a bridge.
