TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — As long as Moses’ hands
were kept uplifted, Joshua and his men had
the better part of the battle with Amalek
(Exodus 17:8-13).
Psalm — Our help is from the Lord, who
made heaven and earth (Psalm 121).
Second Reading — Remain faithful;
proclaim the word; be persistent whether it
is convenient or not
(2 Timothy 3:14 — 4:2).
Gospel — God will secure the rights of the
chosen who call out day and night
(Luke 18:1-8).

DEPENDING ON GOD
“Getting by with a little help from our friends” is not an idea
that began with the Beatles. Certainly the idea of “getting by with
a little help from God” goes back at least to the first reading
today from Exodus. How we get that help, however, is the key to
this weekend’s scriptures.
No matter how inadequate Moses felt to the task God had
given him, he persevered—even though he needed help from the
people around him. The Israelites especially depended on God
for freedom. The woman in the Gospel, desperate and destitute,
had no one to depend on, but still she would not give up. She
could not afford to bribe the unscrupulous judge, but she pestered
him into weariness until finally he met her demands.
We sometimes need to turn to others to help us through
difficult times; but if we always turn to God, we won’t be
disappointed, for our help, the psalm assures us, is from the Lord.

Diocesan Development Fund Campaign
Progress
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
On behalf of our St. Joseph family, I would like to express our deepest
graƟtude to everyone who has made your pledge to support our
Diocesan Development Fund (DDF). We cannot thank you enough for
your generous donaƟons, as well as all of your prayers and support.
Funds raised through the appeal help our diocesan church family
conƟnue its many needed services and programs. AddiƟonally, your giŌ
can directly help our parish's formaƟon ministries and maintain our
church. We are able to keep all giŌs over our goal for the parish.
Our record shows that we have over 1,200 acƟve parishioners, and only
290 families have contributed to DDF this year. I pray and ask for your
support. If you have not made a pledge for DDF, I urge you to
prayerfully consider how you can help our diocese and parish.

How to receive a plenary indulgence during the Holy Year of Mercy.
Pope Francis has declared an Extraordinary Jubilee Year dedicated to mercy began on Dec. 8, 2015 and will end on Nov. 20, 2016.
Its theme is "Merciful Like the Father." The Holy See also has designated several ways that Catholics may receive a plenary
indulgence during this Holy Year of Mercy.
In order to receive a plenary indulgence Catholics need to fulfill the following conditions:
1. Pass through the doors of mercy of the pilgrimage church. The pilgrimage Catholic Church for West End Vicariate is Our Lady
of Guadalupe in Chino.
2. Make a profession of faith in the church (either the Apostles’ or Nicene Creed).
3. Pray for the pope’s intentions and the pope himself.
4. Meditate on mercy while receiving Communion during a period either 20 days before or after visiting the pilgrimage church.
5. Participate in the sacrament of penance during a period either 20 days before or after visiting the pilgrimage church.
For the sick and elderly who are unable to visit a pilgrimage church:
1. Make a profession of faith (either the Apostles’ or Nicene Creed).
2. Pray for the pope’s intentions and the pope himself.
3. Only if possible, receive Communion and meditate on mercy during a period either 20 days before or after making the profession of faith and praying for the pope and his intentions.
If receiving Communion is not possible, then a person may also participate in a televised Mass or one shown on the Internet.
4. Only if possible, participate in the sacrament of penance during a period either 20 days before or after making the profession of
faith and praying for the pope and his intentions.
Besides these steps, I highly encourage you to perform spiritual works of mercy each day. These are some examples of spiritual
works of mercy: counsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant, admonish sinners, comfort the afflicted, forgive offenses, bear wrong
patiently, pray for the living and the dead, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, visit the sick…
I wish that the Jubilee Indulgence may reach each one as a genuine experience of God's mercy, which comes to meet each person
in the Face of the Father who welcomes and forgives, forgetting completely the sin committed. May God’s peace and love remain
in you and your family.
Rev. Timothy Do.
