Certainly the idea of “getting by with a little help from God” goes back at least to the first reading today from Exodus. How we get that help, however, is the key to this weekend’s scriptures. No matter how inadequate Moses felt to the task God had given him, he persevered—even though he needed help from the people around him. The Israelites especially depended on God for freedom. The woman in the Gospel, desperate and destitute, had no one to depend on, but still she would not give up. She could not afford to bribe the unscrupulous judge, but she pestered him into weariness until finally he met her demands. We sometimes need to turn to others to help us through difficult times; but if we always turn to God, we won’t be disappointed, for our help, the psalm assures us, is Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. from the Lord. Today’s readings First Reading — As long as Moses’ hands were kept uplifted, Joshua and his men had the better part of the battle with Amalek (Exodus 17:8-13). Psalm — Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth (Psalm 121). Second Reading — Remain faithful; proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or not (2 Timothy 3:14 — 4:2). Gospel — God will secure the rights of the chosen who call out day and night (Luke 18:1-8). World Mission Sunday (October 22-23, 2016) DATE CHANGED BECAUSE OF A SPECIAL ARCHDIOCESAN COLLECTION FOR HAITI This Jubilee year marks the 90th anniversary of World Missionary Day, first approved by Pope Pius XI in 1926 and organized by the Pontifical Society for the Propagation of the Faith. It is appropriate then to recall the wise instructions of my Predecessors who ordered that to this Society be destined all the offerings collected in every diocese, parish, religious community, association and ecclesial movement throughout the world for the care of Christian communities in need and for supporting the proclamation of the Gospel even to the ends of the earth. Today too we believe in this sign of missionary ecclesial communion. Let us not close our hearts within our own particular concerns, but let us open them to all of humanity. May Holy Mary, sublime icon of redeemed humanity, model of missionaries for the Church, teach all men, women and families, to foster and safeguard the living and mysterious presence of the Risen Lord in every place, he who renews personal relationships, cultures and peoples, and who fills all with joyful mercy. ~POPE FRANCIS Please be generous in your support of the World Mission Sunday Collection next weekend and use the envelopes provided at the entrance of church and in your bulletins. Be amazed by what is true and beautiful, what is of God!” —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
