Hillary Clinton’s vision for an economy where
“Our Businesses, Our Workers, and Our
Consumers Grow and Prosper Together”
TOLEDO, Oct. 3, 2016:
In Toledo and Akron, Ohio
on Monday, presidential
candidate Hillary Clinton
informed Ohioans that she
believes “we need to build
an economy that works for
everyone, not just those at
the top. But today, there are
still powerful interests
fighting to protect their own
profits and privileges at the
expense of everyone else.
“Too many of the rules
and incentives in our
economy encourage those
at the top to abuse their
power and take advantage
of consumers, workers,
small businesses, and taxpayers. That makes it
tougher for even wellmeaning CEOs to take the
high road.”
According to Ms.
Clinton, “in recent months,
we’ve seen three egregious
examples of these problems. We saw a drug company, Mylan, excessively
raise the price of lifesaving

country’s biggest banks,

pecting customers. And
now we’ve learned the latest on Donald Trump:
“In one year, he lost
nearly a billion dollars; he
stiffed small businesses,
laid off workers, and
walked away from
hardworking communities; and he apparently got
to avoid paying taxes for
nearly two decades—while
tens of millions of working
families paid theirs. That’s
what he calls “smart” business.”
In short, in Ohio, Ms.
Clinton offered her vision
for an economy where “our
businesses, our workers,
and our consumers grow
and prosper together.”
Trump niega haber hecho negocios con Cuba
WASHINGTON, DC, 29
IX 16 (AP): Donald Trump
refutó el jueves un reporte
de Newsweek de que
exploró oportunidades de
negocios en Cuba a finales
de la década de 1990, en
aparente violación al embargo comercial de Estados
Unidos sobre la isla.
Trump le aseguró a NH1
News de New Hampshire que
“nunca hice negocios en
Cuba”.
“No, nunca hice nada en
Cuba. Nunca tuve un
acuerdo en Cuba”, agregó.
Newsweek reportó el
jueves que el trabajo fue
realizado por un despacho
de consultoría llamado
Seven Arrows a nombre de
Trump Hotels & Casino
Resorts
Inc.
La
publicación afirma que
Trump le reembolsó al
despacho 68.000 dólares
en gastos de negocios por
su trabajo sobre Cuba,
aunque ni Trump ni la
consultoría buscaron una
exención gubernamental
que les permitiera tales
actividades.
Trump criticó al
reportero de Newsweek,
de quien dijo que tiene
una “mala reputación.
En tanto, la candidata
presidencial del Partido
Demócrata
Hillary
Clinton dijo que el reporte
es simplemente más
evidencia de que el magnate antepone sus propios
intereses a los de la nación.
Aunque Clinton apoya
los esfuerzos del presidente
Barack Obama para aliviar
el embargo y restaurar lazos
con Cuba, acusó a su
oponente de actuar contra
los intereses del país al
desafiar las sanciones.
“Nosotros tenemos
leyes en nuestro país” y
Trump sabía de qué
trataban, dijo Clinton a
reporteros a bordo de su
avión de campaña. La
candidata agregó que “él
burló deliberadamente”
la ley.

lies. The community’s tired
of them, because they’re addicted,” said Gerken, who
stated the county now has
mentors meeting ex-inmates
at those bus stops and take
them to a shelter or other appropriate agency or service.
The county commissioner
emphasized the right community partnerships could
provide re-entry programs to
serve as an alternative to locking up Latinos and AfricanAmericans in the community.
The county commissioner
told the audience that jobs
will be plentiful in the coming months and years, citing
the auto parts supplier plants
that will locate at the former
Jeep plant site, now known as
the Overland Industrial Park.
Dana and Detroit Manufacturing Systems are promising
at least 600 new jobs once
their factories are built.
Gerken stated there could
be “as many as 1,000” new
jobs eventually, paying $18
to $22 per hour, attractive
enough that people would
drive from as far away as
Findlay and Monroe, Michigan to work there.
But Gerken’s goal is to employ as many Lucas County
residents at those plants as possible, securing a commitment
from Dana to hire the first 500
people locally. But he emphasized those workers must be
qualified to do the exact job
required. Those people will be
required to complete a work
readiness program and earn a
certificate through Ohio Means
Jobs-Lucas County. Gerken
promised to market that program in the Latino community
through agencies such as
Adelante, Inc. and FLOC.
“Tell the young people to
that want these jobs to not only
get the training, but tell them to
quit smoking weed. I’m serious. You can go get all the
training you want, but you go
in there and drop dirty on a
sample. Put the damn weed
down for 30 days. Help yourselves,” said Gerken. “We had
a job fair the other day and we
lost 40 percent of the applicants to failing a drug test.”
Gerken also promoted a
number of levies on the November ballot, citing, in particular, the LC Children Services board (LCCS) levy and
the City of Toledo’s three-quarter percent income tax. He
stated a rising amount of child
abuse and neglect can be directly attributed to the opioid
and heroin overdose epidemic.
The county commissioner
stated 35 percent of the agency’s
staff would be laid off if the
CSB [or LCCS] levy fails.
Gerken also urged Latino
leaders to forward the résumés
of qualified candidates for
county government jobs. He
stated not enough Latino job
candidates are stepping forward
when the county has openings,
particularly for senior administrative leadership positions in
government.

relationship violence and
sexual misconduct complaints
during the last academic year.
The office and the Title IX

Institutional Equity was created in 2015 and handles discrimination and sexual assault
investigations.
From Aug. 16, 2015 to Aug.
15, 2016, there were 461 incidents reported under MSU’s
Relationship Violence and
Sexual Misconduct Policy,
including sexual harassment,
sexual assault, relationship

La actriz, quien apareció en el programa

Decidir no casarse, aseguró, “te da la

Drone Academy takes flight at Tri-C
PARMA: A Drone Academy launched by the Public
Safety Center of Excellence
at Cuyahoga Community
College (Tri-C®) will introduce first responders to the
high-flying technology and
its potential uses.
The inaugural academy
will be held Oct. 10-14,
2016 at the KeyBank Public Safety Training Center
at the College’s Western
Campus in Parma. The
week-long session will provide hands-on experience
through simulations and
practice drills.
Drones are increasingly
being deployed by public
safety departments in a variety of situations, including search-and-rescue missions, evidence collection,
crime and crash scene investigations
and
firefighting operations.
“Drones can be a tremendous asset in the public
safety field,” said Clayton
Harris, vice president of public safety and dean of criminal justice at Tri-C. “But
like any tool, it’s only as
effective as its operator. Our
goal is to teach first responders how to maximize the benefits of this technology.”
The academy sold out
soon after the College
opened enrollment. The 12
participants are all public
safety professionals work-
ing in law enforcement,
firefighting or other first responder occupations in
Northeast Ohio.
Harris said academy
graduates will be prepared
to gain federal certification
as a drone pilot.
Given the demand for the
course, the College plans to
schedule additional training sessions. For more information, visit www.tric.edu/droneacademy.

CLEVELAND, Oct. 3,
2016 (AP): Cleveland State

additional housing for up
to 1,000 students on its

One of the options being looked at would replace

Cleveland State wants to

Supreme Court to hear case over deportations
WASHINGTON, DC,
Sept. 29, 2016 (AP): The
Supreme Court will take
up
the
Obama
administration’s appeal of
lower court rulings making it harder to deport immigrants who’ve been convicted of crimes.
The justices agreed
Thursday to review rulings
striking down a provision of
immigration law as unconstitutional.
The federal appeals court
in San Francisco said the section of the law that defines a
“crime of violence” is too
vague. Conviction for a
crime of violence subjects
an immigrant to deportation
and usually speeds up the
process.
The appeals court based
its ruling on a 2015 Supreme
Court decision that struck
down a similarly worded
part of another federal law
imposing longer prison sentence on repeat criminals.
The administration said
the court was wrong to
equate the two laws.

Michael Dukakis soon contacted Velásquez during their
bids for the U.S. presidency.
In addition, San Antonio
elected Henry Cisneros, the
city’s first Latino mayor since
1835.
Velásquez realized early
on that the only way for
Latinos to gain political
power was through the ballot
box, Galán said.
In 1988, he was diagnosed
with cancer. He had no health
insurance, and doctors gave
him less than four months to
live. He lasted four weeks.
Lorenzo Cano, associate
director of the Center for
Mexican-American Studies at
the University of Houston,
said Velásquez influenced
generations of activists who
followed the idea of voting as
power.
“Willie Velásquez: Your
Vote Is Your Voice” begins
airing on PBS stations Monday.

ACLU statement on Ohio Executions Set to
Resume in January
CLEVELAND, Oct. 3,
2016: Today, the Ohio
Department of Rehabilitation and Correction announced that executions
will resume in January
2017. Below is a statement that can be attributed to Mike Brickner,
Senior Policy Director of
the ACLU of Ohio.
“It is disheartening to
learn Ohio intends to resume executions after
over a decade of problems, including four
botched executions. Attempts to use new drug
combinations or those
that have failed in past lethal injections amount to
little more than human experimentation.
“Even worse, because of
a secrecy law enacted by
our legislature, Ohioans
cannot have confidence
that execution drugs were
obtained through legal or
ethical means, nor that they
have been tested for efficacy or regulated in any
way.
“These questions will
certainly be addressed by
courts, but the state’s insistence to continue with executions runs counter to
public support of the
death penalty, which is at
its lowest point in forty
years.
“Given all of Ohio’s
problems with the death
penalty and the tremendous risk we run of another botched execution,
it is well past time for
officials to scrap this broken system altogether.”

about the ACLU of Ohio’s
stance on the death penalty, please look here

Ohio elections chief: About 806,000 ask for
absentee ballots
COLUMBUS, Sept. 27,
2016 (AP): Nearly 806,000
Ohioans have asked for an
absentee ballot ahead of
the November presidential
election.
Republican Secretary
of State Jon Husted says
more than 13,000 of the
requests for an absentee
ballot are from military and
overseas voters.
Residents in the swing
state can vote absentee by
mail or in person without
having to give a reason.
Husted’s office says the
absentee ballot applications he’s received so far
this year are up compared
with the same time during
the 2012 election. Nearly
83,000 more requests have
been received.
Military and overseas
voters can already cast ballots for the Nov. 8 election.
Early voting for other Ohioans begins on Oct. 12.
