requires of you: Only to do the right and to love goodness,
and to walk humbly with your God.” Bishop Burbidge’s coat
of arms includes visual elements which reflect his devotion

prophet Micah (6:8): “You have been told … what the Lord

Michael (his baptismal patron), as well as the bishop’s Irish
ancestry.

A diocesan bishop shows his commitment to the flock
he shepherds by combining his personal coat of arms
with that of the diocese, ….
On the left is the arms of the Diocese of Raleigh:
The arms of the Diocese of Raleigh allude to those of Sir
Walter Raleigh (1554–1618), the English explorer for
whom the City of Raleigh is named. Sir Walter’s shield
was gules, a bend lozengy argent - that is, a diagonal
line of white diamond shapes on a red background.
The Diocese of Raleigh has kept the same tinctures,
or colors, and rearranged the lozenges in the form of
a cross.
The Cross of Christ is also a central element in Bishop
Burbidge’s personal arms, which he designed for his
ordination as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of
Philadelphia in 2002. The shield is divided quarterly, or
per cross, into sections colored blue (azure) and green
(vert). At the center point of the shield is a Celtic cross
in gold (Or), which alludes to the Irish ancestry of the
bishop and his family.
The small figures, or charges, around the cross reflect
Bishop Burbidge’s devotion to the saints:
The fleur-de-lis and the star both represent the Blessed
Virgin Mary, who is known by the titles “Lily among
Thorns” (cf. Song of Songs 2:2) and “Star of the
Sea.” The lily also calls to mind the family name of
the bishop’s mother, Shirley Lilley Burbidge. The star,
white on a blue background, appears in the arms of the
Archdiocese of Philadelphia, where Bishop Burbidge
was born and reared in the Catholic faith, and which
he served for more than 20 years as a priest and bishop.

In designing the shield — the central element in what
is formally called the heraldic achievement a bishop
has an opportunity to depict symbolically various
aspects of his own life and heritage and to highlight
particular aspects of Catholic faith and devotion that
are important to him. Every coat of arms also includes
external elements that identify the rank of the bearer. …
The flaming sword (cf. Genesis 3:24) is a symbol of
Bishop Burbidge’s baptismal patron saint, Michael the
Archangel, who leads the hosts of God to protect His
people from the Evil One (Revelation 12:7).
The ducal coronet is taken from the arms of Saint
Charles Borromeo, the sixteenth-century Archbishop of
Milan. As archbishop, Saint Charles worked tirelessly
to restore unity in the Church and to serve the poor and
the oppressed. He is the patron saint of Saint Charles
Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia, where Bishop
Burbidge studied for the priesthood, and which he
served as Dean of Formation and as Rector.
The motto, placed on a scroll below the shield, comes
from the Book of the Prophet Micah (6:8):
“You have been told ... what the Lord requires of you:
Only to do the right and to love goodness, and to walk
humbly with your God.”

We have found the Messiah. …
Come and you will see.
based on John 1:39, 41
All Saints is a tithing parish, giving of our time, talent,
and treasure so as to give glory to God.
Today’s Gospel is the parable of the unjust judge and the
persistent widow. Remember that parables are meant to make
only one point and they are meant to surprise the hearer. Jesus
is not saying that it is okay for the judge to be unjust. The
surprise of the parable is that the widow, in her persistence,
gets a response, and it is the response she wanted! The unjust
judge is then contrasted with God who is just. In the story
of Moses praying to God while the Israelites were in battle,
Moses needed the assistance of Aaron and Hur to keep his
arms lifted up. As long as his arms were lifted high, the
Israelites were victorious. These two Scripture passages show
us the necessity of persevering prayer and also the assistance
of others in communal prayer. We are reminded how to pray
by these 2 Scripture passages: with hope and perseverance
and also by praying with others. Whether it is within a family
that we pray together or with others, we realize that prayer
is more than what we do by ourselves. May the Holy Spirit
pray within us, bring us together in prayer, and give us
perseverance in prayer. October is a month in which we recall
the rosary. It is a wonderful, meditative prayer as we reflect
upon the sacred mysteries of Jesus and our Blessed Mother.
In the 2nd reading today, from 2 Timothy 3:2 we hear,
“… encourage through all patience and teaching.” This
is the text from which Bishop Loverde took his episcopal
motto “Encourage and teach with patience.” We have this
opportunity to bring others to know Christ through our patient
teaching and to encourage them to come to know Jesus, the
way, the truth, and the life.
Our new Bishop-Designate Michael Burbidge has as his
episcopal motto, “Walk humbly with God” [Micah 6:8].
May the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was also led by the Spirit
in prayer, show us how to pray and to encourage and teach
with patience and to walk humbly with God.
Thank you to all who brought food last Sunday for the St.
Lucy Project, the food distribution hub in Manassas, which is

As the November elections approach, all parishioners should
be aware of the following policies of the Diocese of Arlington
with regard to political activity at parishes and other Church
facilities and events:
•
Distribution of partisan campaign literature (e.g. leaflets,
bumper stickers, etc.) on Church property is not permitted.
•
Distribution of any voter guides or other election-related
materials, other than those prepared by Bishop Loverde,
the Virginia Catholic Conference or the United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), also is not
permitted on Church property. This prohibition includes
any of the “Voter Guides,” “Platforms,” etc., prepared
by various groups, whether they claim to be within or
outside of the Catholic Church.
Do not bring such materials onto Church property for
distribution. If you discover anyone distributing such
materials, please inform your pastor or a parish staff member.
A complete discussion of our diocesan policies is available
online at the website of the Virginia Catholic Conference,
www . va c at h o l i c . o r g . If you become aware of any
violation of these policies, please contact the Office of the
Chancellor, Catholic Diocese of Arlington, 200 N. Glebe

A Stewardship Thought: It is not always convenient to be
a good steward, especially when all the temptations of our
busy and materialistic world get in the way. Now add our
own pride and ego into the equation and living a stewardship
lifestyle may be downright uncomfortable! Remember, God
didn’t call us to be comfortable. He called us to be faithful.

Next Sunday, we have a display
of beautiful handmade olivewood
carvings from the Holy Land. These
carvings are made by the Christians
of Bethlehem who use them as their
source of income. These brothers and sisters are enduring
hardships at this moment because of the volatile situation in
their home country. Christians in the Holy Land used to be
more than 37% of the population. There are fewer than 1%
now because of the situation. You can support these Catholic
families to remain strong in Bethlehem and Jerusalem by
purchasing some of these beautiful carvings after Mass.

Men: That Man Is You (TMIY) addresses the pressures and
temptations that men face in our modern culture, especially
those relating to their roles as husbands and fathers. The
program harmonizes current social and medical science with
the teachings of the Church and the wisdom of the saints
to develop the vision of man fully alive. It is particularly
indebted to the teachings of the Second Vatican Council and
Pope John Paul II. Our formal program begins at 6:30 am
in the Parish Activities Center with a light breakfast and
fellowship starting at 6:00 am. Please join us at our next
meeting, Sat., Oct. 22. This session will show how the pride
of life can consume us and how making prayer a priority can
transform our spiritual lives.
