During the Centenary Year (2011-2012)
celebration of our absolutely
beautiful church, our Parish
family came home for Mass and
we remembered one
another with the
flowers that adorn
the Altar, with the candles that light
up the Sanctuary, with the bread and

the way par excellence, we
remembered one another in the
Priest’s Mass Intention that is
lifted up with the help of all of
our other remembrances!
Thank you for coming home and remembering

 A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR 
9 OCTOBER 2016
WHO ELSE IS UNDER THAT ROOF AT 87 PINE STREET?
Readers of last Sunday’s A Message from the Pastor might recall reading
about the need to fix the roof over our heads at 87 Pine Street in Freeport
where the Our Holy Redeemer School Building has been standing for
nearly one hundred years. Like the buildings where you work, live, and
study, the building at 87 Pine Street needs maintenance and repair to help
ensure that a safe environment is provided for its users. And while last
Sunday’s message identified users of the past (Our Holy Redeemer School
students and the Sisters of Saint Dominic) and one of the present users of
today (the De La Salle School), it did not mention the numerous other
groups and individuals that will benefit from a new roof over their heads at
87 Pine Street. Groups such as the staff and volunteers of Our Holy
Redeemer Human Services/Outreach and the hundreds of people they
serve; the staff and volunteers of Our Holy Redeemer Religious Education
and the hundreds of children they serve; the members of Our Holy Redeemer’s numerous societies and
organizations such as Santo Redentor, Señor Misericordia, and Cristo Vive. Even the visitors who use our
school building facilities such as Game 7 Sports and the Boy Scouts of America will benefit from a new roof
and as such, they too are being asked to help put it there.
While many of the items revealed by eight years of check-ups have
been addressed (outdoor steps and stoops, windows, boilers, tile,
bathroom sinks and toilets, and an additional dry well outside of
Sumner Hall), we were not in a position to address the Our Holy
Redeemer School-building’s old, leaking, and damaged roof until
now. And that change in position is due in no small part to the
growing number of people coming home to Our Holy Redeemer
with time, talent, and treasure that is allowing this work (and so
much more) to begin!
The first phase of the multiple phase project is scheduled to begin
on 10 October 2016, and will replace the flat roof on the south side of the building at a cost of nearly
$30,000.00. Any contribution that you can offer will not only help see this first phase through to
completion, but it could also allow us to start actively planning the second phase. A well-maintained Our
Holy Redeemer School building today, will help provide for a well-maintained world tomorrow!

FAITH AND GOVERNMENT
From John Adams to the Massachusetts Militia
11 October 1798
To the Officers of the First Brigade of the Third Division of the Militia of Massachusetts
Quincy, 11 October 1798
Gentlemen,
I have received from Major General Hull and Brigadier General
Walker your unanimous address from Lexington, animated with a
martial spirit and expressed with a military dignity, becoming your
characters and the memorable plains, in which it was adopted.
While our country remains untainted with the principles and
manners, which are now producing desolation in so many parts of
the world: while the continues sincere and incapable of insidious
and impious policy: we shall have the strongest reason to rejoice in
the local destination assigned us by providence. But should the
people of America, once become capable of that deep simulation
towards one another and towards foreign nations, which assumes
the language of justice and moderation while it is practicing
iniquity and extravagance; and displays in the most captivating manner the charming pictures of
candour, frankness, and sincerity while it is rioting in rapine and insolence: this country will be
the most miserable habitation in the world. Because we have no government armed with power
capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice,
ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale
goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is
wholly inadequate to the government of any other
An Address so unanimous and firm from the officers commanding two thousand eight hundred
men, consisting of such substantial citizens as are able and willing at their own expense,
completely to arm, and cloath themselves in handsome uniforms does honour to that division of
the Militia which has done so much honour to their country. Oaths, in this country, are as yet
universally considered as sacred obligations. That which you have taken and so solemnly
repeated on that venerable spot is an ample pledge of your sincerity, and devotion to your
country and its government.

SCHOOL IS OPEN!!!
NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL
The weekend of 1-2 October was a memorable weekend for ten young men of The De La Salle School.
These young men were chosen to represent our school at a Lasallian Leadership conference that was held
in Providence, Rhode Island. Lunchtime Friday afternoon saw them boarding the van for the four-hour
drive to Providence. Accompanied by Mr. Gault and Mr. Vera, the adventure began in the school parking
lot on a cold and rainy day, extending the drive to almost five hours due to the weather conditions.
On arrival we all checked in and then went to our first conference session. Students of the San Miguel School, Providence
and La Salle Academy, Philadelphia joined our students. The program included dinner, icebreakers, games, and a movie that
concluded the evening. Skeptical at first the young men of The De La Salle School quickly embraced their responsibilities
and dove into full participation.
Saturday was a full day with the morning starting with prayer and breakfast at 8:00 A.M. followed by talks and sessions
designed to bring out and enhance their leadership skills. The early afternoon all travelled to a local bowling alley for some
lunch and bowling activates. At the invitation of the local parish, we attended the 4:00 P.M. Mass.
We returned to the hotel for another working session, followed by dinner at 7:00 PM. At the conclusion of dinner the
students were given time to enjoy the hotel swimming pool. Exhausted all headed off to bed by 10:30 P.M.
Sunday we gathered for breakfast and our final session at 8:00 A.M. Things were wrapped up and goodbyes said to
newfound friends and fellow Lasallians. The journey home began around 10:00 A.M. and all The De La Salle School students
were picked up in the parking lot by 2:00 PM. All had a beautiful weekend.

Thank you for your Generosity!!!
What do you do when inclement weather or sickness
prevents you from attending Sunday Mass at Our Holy
Redeemer, or family/business obligations take you to
Sunday Mass somewhere other than Our Holy Redeemer?
More than likely, if you use Parish Envelopes to make your offering, you will place “Sundaymissed” envelopes in the Offertory basket the next time you attend Mass. If you don’t use envelopes, it is more than
likely that your Sunday-missed offering will remain missing. It is not that you intentionally choose
to give Our Holy Redeemer less, it’s just hard to intentionally give to Our Holy Redeemer what you
think is more. “Stop thinking”; use envelopes or use E-Giving! E-Giving, like Offertory Envelopes
(thank you for using them) provides you with a way of exercising faithful stewardship even when
inclement weather or sickness prevents you from attending Sunday Mass at Our Holy Redeemer,
or when family/business obligations take you to Sunday Mass somewhere other than Our Holy
Redeemer.

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
“One [of the lepers] realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice”
(See Luke 17:11-19). It is interesting that this particular leper, the one that returned grateful,
realized he had been cured. One wonders if perhaps the others didn’t realize they too had
been cured. What about us? Are we so used to our infirmities and our personal leprosy that
even when the Lord touches us and heals us, we don’t know it, or worse, we don’t want His
healing? After all, to remain infirm, continue being weak, allows us to get by without having
to put too much effort. It seems to free us from having to go out of ourselves to help others.
Sometimes when people say “I can’t”, what they really mean is “I don’t want to”. We need
to change this attitude; we need to be like the leper that realized he had been healed. We
need to return to Jesus glorifying God, giving Him thanks and changing our lives. During
October, this Pro Life Month of the Rosary, let’s take this opportunity to pray the Rosary to
give thanks to God for all He has done for us, and especially for the sacred gift of life!

FAITH AND THE ROMAN MISSAL
WITH HELP FROM THE PASTOR AND POPE LEO XIII
“For we have the record of not a few brave and experienced men, both before
and after Christopher Columbus, who with stubbornness and zeal explored
unknown lands and seas yet more unknown. And the memory of these, man,
mindful of benefits, rightly holds, and will hold in honour; because they advanced
the ends of knowledge and humanity, and increased the common prosperity of
the race, not by light labour, but by supreme exertion, often accompanied by
great dangers. But there is, nevertheless, between these and him of whom we
speak, a generous difference. He was distinguished by this unique note, that in
his work of traversing and retraversing immense tracts of ocean, he looked for a
something greater and higher than did these others. We say not that he was
unmoved by perfectly honourable aspirations after knowledge, and deserving
well of human society; nor did he despise glory, which is a most engrossing ideal
to great souls; nor did he altogether scorn a hope of advantages to himself; but
to him far before all these human considerations was the consideration of his
ancient faith, which questionless dowered him with strength of mind and will, and often strengthened and
consoled him in the midst of the greatest difficulties. This view and aim is known to have possessed his mind
above all; namely, to open a way for the Gospel over new lands and seas. …”
… “And if (Christopher Columbus) moved Ferdinand and Isabella to decree that only Catholic Christians should
be suffered to approach the New World and trade with the natives, he brought forward as reason, "that he
sought nothing from his enterprise and endeavour but the increase and glory of the Christian religion." And
this was well known to Isabella, who better than any had understood the great man's mind; indeed it is
evident that it had been clearly laid before that most pious, masculine-minded, and great-souled woman. For
she had declared of Columbus that he would boldly thrust himself upon the vast ocean, "to achieve a most
signal thing, for the sake of the Divine glory." And to Columbus himself, on his second return, she writes:
"That the expenses she had incurred, and was about to incur, for the Indian expeditions, had been well
bestowed; for thence would ensure a spreading of Catholicism."

so that Christ’s saving work
may continue to the end of the ages;
stir up, we pray, the hearts of Your faithful
and grant that they may feel a more urgent call
to work for the Salvation of every creature,
so that from all the peoples on earth
one family and one people of Your own
may arise and increase.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,
Who lives and reigns with You
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
FAITH AND YOUTH
ALTAR SERVERS
Altar Servers assist the Priest and Deacon at the Holy Mass in carrying out their sacred
functions. The assistance of Altar Servers in the Mass helps the congregation to pray
the Mass better.
This summer, we welcomed five new Altar Servers to our ranks. Young people in the
4th grade and above are invited to join the Altar Servers. Please contact Father
Alessandro da Luz at (516) 378-0665 if you are interested in receiving training to be an
Altar Server at Our Holy Redeemer.
SEA SCOUT SHIP 18
Sea Scouting is adventure on sea and land—for you. It’s a chance to learn and have fun at the same
time, learning boating skills and about our maritime heritage. Youth members plan and carry out
activities under the guidance of trained adults. Ship 18 just recently elected its first youth officers.
Ship 18 normally meets on the first and third Sunday of the month in the Lower Church at 6:30pm
(following the 5:00 P.M. Sunday Mass). Recent activities have included a tour of a commercial
clamming boat, boat racing, and clamming.
Upcoming meetings are on 16 October and 6 November at 6:30 P.M. Young men age 14 (who have
completed the 8th grade) through age 21, are welcome to join. Please come to one of our meetings
or contact Skipper Mr. Larry Vodopivec at (917) 543-8344 or [email protected].
ATTENTION YOUNG PEOPLE
WHO HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED (UP THROUGH AGE 18)!

our Catholic beliefs? Do you want to experience fellowship with other Catholic teens? Do you
want to learn how to pray better and to come to a deeper understanding of the Holy Mass?
There will be opportunities to meet special guests and experience Catholicism in new and
different ways, but only if you "Come and see!" (John 1:39): Our meetings and group activities
will be held on Friday evenings at 7:30 P.M.
Calendar of Upcoming Activities:
 14 October- Family Movie Night at 7:30 P.M. in The Da La Salle School

(San Mateo XXVIII: 19-20).

Me
nuestra vida.”

WILL YOUR
FAITH SAVE
YOU?
.
As Jesus was entering a village,
ten lepers met Him. They
stood at a distance from Him
and raised their voices saying,
“Jesus, Master! Have pity on
us!” And when He saw them,
He said, “Go show yourselves
to the priests.” As they were
going, they were cleansed. And
one of them, realizing he had
been healed, returned,
glorifying God in a loud voice;
and he fell at the feet of
Jesus and thanked Him. He
was a Samaritan. Jesus said
in reply, “Ten were cleansed,
were they not? Where are the
other nine? Has none but this
foreigner returned to give
thanks to God?” Then He said
to him, “Stand up and go;
your faith has saved you.”
