t. Monica, whose feast we celebrate in August, is
often known as “the persistent mother.” She
watched her oldest son, Augustine, turn his back on his
Christian faith. Monica was exasperated. For years she
gave up talking directly to her son on the advice of a
local bishop, who told her that it was better to talk to
God about Augustine then to Augustine about God.
The mother never gave up praying for her son.
Eventually Augustine gave up his wild ways, was
baptized, and later ordained and named bishop of
Hippo. St. Augustine went on to become one of the
Church’s greatest scholars. Today’s readings address
the importance of persistent prayer. Abraham, in spite
of trepidation that he is bothering the Lord, continues to
ask about the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah. Jesus, in
Luke’s Gospel, tells his disciples to “ask and you will
receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will
be opened to you” (Luke 11:9). This is our charge: keep
praying.

Sonata #2 in C Minor, #1 & 2,
Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)
The English publishers Coventry and Holler
commissioned Mendelssohn to write three voluntaries
for organ. Since Mendelssohn was unfamiliar with the
English Voluntary style, he called them “sonatas.” Six
sonatas were composed between August, 1844 and
January 1845.

any of you who have prepared to receive a
sacrament may remember being asked for
a recent copy of your baptismal certificate.
Or you may have heard the term
“Sacramental Registry”. Simply put, the Sacramental
Registry is a list of every recipient of certain sacraments
that take place at a church. It is also the way the
Catholic Church keeps track of the Sacramental Life of
its members.
is not required to be sent back, but Sacred Heart and
most other churches do. A few items that are not
sacraments but are related to them, like marriage
annulments, are also updated in the baptism entry. So
when a priest or a staff member of a church asks for a
recent, official copy of a baptism certificate, it’s not just
idle curiosity. They want to verify not only that you
have been baptized, but to verify where you are in your
sacramental life.
When someone is baptized (or enters the church through
profession of faith), that person’s identifying
information is entered in the registry. In the case of
baptism, it usually includes the parents’ names and the
godparents’ (or sponsors’) names, as well as the
location of birth, the date and the priest officiating.
That entry becomes that person’s “home entry” that is
updated with additional information throughout the
person’s sacramental life. For instance, if Baby John is
baptized at Sacred Heart, his baptism is entered in the
registry. A few years later, he makes his first
Communion at Sacred Heart, and that sacrament is
entered in the registry, cross referenced to his baptismal
entry. Then his parents move, and he is later confirmed
at a church in Ohio. John’s confirmation is entered in
the registry of the Ohio church, and it is sent to Sacred
Heart so that we can update his baptismal entry with
that information. John later gets married at yet a
different church, and likewise, the marriage is listed in
that church’s registry and sent to Sacred Heart for
update.
Here at Sacred Heart, the registry is quite extensive, as
you might imagine for a 130-year-old parish: 25
volumes in total. It consists of different volumes for
each sacrament tracked, each volume covering a number
of years. We have many historic volumes going all the
way back to the founding of the parish in 1880 (the
oldest ones are written in Latin) and covering the North
Georgia Missions until the 1940’s. Each person is
tracked through a series of index cards that cross
reference each name with the sacrament and the volume
and page it is found on. Currently there are 30 drawers
of index cards; no one has dared to undertake counting
them.
Sacred Heart gets a number of requests each year for
information from people conducting genealogical
research, and that use is of particular importance for
research into the era prior to government registrations of
life events. Old Sacramental Registries such as ours also
give a window to how lives were lived. We see what
baby names were popular in the Baptism Registry. We
see the differences in health care by what diseases were
the cause of death in the Death Registry. When helping
families with their research, we can see the growth of
both the city of Atlanta and the Catholic Church in
Atlanta as we see families progress through the two
original Catholic churches to those in the suburbs. It
helps connects us to the Universal Church and all who
have gone before. It’s a written account of the
Communion of Saints.
In this way, any person with an interest need only know
where the baptism took place in order to get an up-todate sacramental history of a person. (There are privacy
rules in place regarding who can and cannot gain access
to a person’s information in the Sacramental Registry.)
Not all sacraments are sent back to the church of
baptism. Obviously not Reconciliation, and usually not
the Anointing of the Sick. Interestingly, First Eucharist

ave you ever had occasion to read the biographies

the ancient Catholic dioceses vanished under
Lutheranism.
In North Africa, tiny dioceses
disappeared under the sands or were swept away by
Islam. Even in relatively recent history in the US,
some original dioceses never really developed as
population centers, such as the old dioceses of
Bardstown, Vincennes, Sault Ste. Marie, or Walla
Walla. The tradition of “titular sees” assures that the
ancient churches are always held in prayer, as the
bishop celebrates Mass in its memory a few times a
year.
Many hundreds of places around the world were
dioceses at one time, but are no longer. In England, for
example, some of the historic dioceses ceased to be
Catholic at the Reformation and their cathedrals passed
to the Church of England. Similarly, in Scandinavia

SIGUE REZANDO
11:9). Esta es nuestra tarea: seguir rezando.

TRADICIONES DE
NUESTRA FE
P
or siglos, Latinoamérica ha desarrollado una larga
tradición religiosa con mitología espléndida. La
palabra “religión” del verbo latín religere significa
“atar” o “enlazar”.
