Weekly Message
Who is my neighbor?
On this 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time, the gospel reading tells the popular story of the Good Samaritan. A brief context of the story of the Good Samaritan will shed some light on our reflection today.
The Samaritans were northern Jews who had intermarried with foreign settlers. They were despised
by other Jews and were not allowed to help rebuild the temple in Jerusalem after their exile in about
520 B.C. The Samaritans then built their own temple and had their own priests. That was the basis of
the hostilities that grew between Jews and the Samaritans, which was handed down from one generation to the other. At the time of Christ, the road from Jerusalem to Jericho was very dangerous. It
was about 20 miles long but very steep as it dropped 3,600 feet. The road was narrow and steep and
was used by bandits and thieves at night.
The traveler in the gospel story was most probably a Jewish merchant with goods and money (a good target for brigands). His decision to travel alone at night on such a dangerous road was certainly not a wise one. He fell into the
hands of the robbers who beat him and left him half-dead. Two pious and devoted Jews, a priest and a Levite, passed
by, but they would not help the dying man. They were afraid of their safety and wanted to avoid being religiously unclean (Numbers 9:10). The Good Samaritan, on his part, noticed the anguish on the face of the dying man and took
care of him. He took a risk in doing so, but he helped, even though it was inconvenient for him.
The lawyer asked Jesus: “Who is my neighbor?” The answer he got was more like: “A neighbor is anyone in need.” A
“neighbor” is broader than just a family member or someone next door. Sometimes we look for excuses not to help
someone. Sometimes we make comments like: “He brought the problem upon himself” or “She should have been more
careful.” Yes, the man who was attacked should have been more careful, but the Good Samaritan did not chastise the
man but rather helped in his immediate need.
The Good Samaritan went beyond the racial hostilities that existed between him and the man. It is not easy to get beyond our individual prejudices, but this is what the gospel is challenging us to do today. We are also challenged to
bring out the good in us by loving and caring for people in need. The traveler who was half-dead could not ask for help,
but he was helped by a man who knew he needed help. At the end of the story, Jesus asked the lawyer to go and act as
the Good Samaritan did. We are all on a journey here on earth. We are pilgrims, and along the way, we may be the one
who needs help or the one called to help another person. Let us not shy away from the good we can do for others.
Since the middle of June, we have added to our parish staff. Kathy Yoo replaced Audrey Dell as our pianist for the
7:30am and 9am Sunday Masses. Kathy is not totally new to our parish family as she played for the parish some years
ago before Audrey Dell. We welcome her again to our parish as she enhances our liturgy with her gift. Our parish is
also blessed to have Chris Rubio on staff. Chris is the Director of Family Life and Social Concerns in our parish. He has
already begun work with our social ministry, and the volunteers there are very pleased to have him. He will also be involved with marriage preparation and other programs that will enhance family life in the parish. Chris comes with a
wealth of experience in church ministries. He was most recently the Director of Parish Social Ministry at St. Pius V
Church in Pasadena. He has served as Youth Minister and Family Life Coordinator in other parishes and also worked
in the archdiocesan Catholic Charities as Director of Parish Social Ministry and Advocacy.
The first of July is the beginning of a new fiscal year in the church and the beginning of a new year for the parish Pastoral Council. After three years of dedicated work, Tony Butera and Denise Ruffino completed their term on the Council
on June 30th. On behalf of the parish family, I want to thank them for their selfless service and love for our parish. I
know I will be seeing you in other areas of our parish life, and I continue to welcome your suggestions for the good of
our parish. I welcome the new members of the Pastoral Council – Cherith Letargo and Julian Guilford – who just began their three-year term. I also welcome the new officers of the Pastoral Council for 2016-17: Jocelyn Waggoner
(Chair), Elizabeth Chapman (Vice Chair) and Joe Russo (Secretary). I invite all parishioners to pray for wisdom and
courage for our parish Pastoral Council as they help the pastor in meeting the needs of our parish.

Jubilee Year of Mercy
Could anyone object to Jesus’s supreme lesson in mercy, the parable of the Good Samaritan? Jesus’s devoutly religious audience
certainly did! Scant sympathy for anyone foolish enough to travel crime-ridden “Jericho Highway” alone. Much sympathy for
priest and Levite, hurrying to assigned temple ministry, unwilling to risk ritual impurity through hands-on mercy. No sympathy for Jesus’s scandalous hero. Samaritans were religious apostates and political enemies. Jesus challenges them—and us—to
seek God’s presence not only in liturgical beauty but in a fellow traveler’s self-inflicted misfortunes. See God’s presence even in
someone outside the law, whose hands-on mercy springs not from religious obligation but from the heart’s instinctive goodness. Since Jesus became our “Good Samaritan” despite our foolishness and sins, who are we to ration our mercy? “Who is my
neighbor?” (Luke 10:29). The next person we see who needs hands-on mercy! No conditions, no limits, no exceptions. Especially
in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Jesus commands, “Go and do likewise” (10:37).

PRAYER WARRIORS NEEDED FOR THE 1 CHURCH
1 DAY PRAYER VIGIL PROGRAM
This program provides prayer for our community
and the communities around us 24 hours a day,
365 days a year. Think of it as a canopy or umbrella of continuous prayer that protects us from evil
and temptations. KSBJ Radio is the program sponsor, and the Humble, Kingwood, and Atascocita
areas are the pilot cities for this program which is
rapidly expanding to many other cities. Eventually,
it is hoped to have our entire nation and, indeed,
the entire world covered with continuous prayer.
This program can only be successful if two major
points are observed:
1. Churches of all denominations and faiths must
unite in a common cause in prayer. So far, we
have 38 churches participating in the Kingwood, Humble, and Atascocita area.
2. Prayer warriors must keep their commitment to
pray during their assigned hour and must do
their very best to pray the intentions distributed
to them while praying for an entire hour. Satan
will find and take advantage of any hour that is
not prayed to disrupt and potentially cause our
“umbrella” to fail. We can only be as strong as
our weakest link, and each of us is a link in the
chain of continuous prayer.

is all that is required for this program. Each
Church has been assigned a specific day for prayer. St. Mary Magdalene has the 3rd Friday of every
month for our 24-hour period.
Please consider if you are willing and able to join
the St. Mary 1 Church 1 Day prayer warriors in
this incredibly challenging and rewarding program. Our Lady has said that prayer can save the
world, so let us begin by saving one community at
a time by each of us praying for one of the hours
during our 3rd Friday 24-hour vigil every month!

Children’s News and Adult Faith Formation
From The Ultimate Catholic Quiz by Karl Keating (Ignatius Press; Ignatius.com)
(Reprinted with permission)
Can you correctly answer this question?
Q. Creation means (a) God made everything out of nothing; (b) God made everything out of unformed plasmatic matter; (c) God made everything out of empty
space; (d) God set the universe in motion and then withdrew; (e) none of the above.
Your church needs you!: Sign up as a new recruit, or re-up your service as a catechist. The
only way we can offer the CCE classes needed by so many families in our parish is through the generous stewardship of our adult catechists. Please contact Mike or Ginger for additional information about serving as a catechist.
Reaching Ginger: If you need to reach Ginger, our Coordinator of Formation for Adults
and Children, you can email her at: [email protected] or you can call her at (281) 4468211, extension 249.
The answer is (a). Creation refers to God’s making everything without pre-existing things of any sort. Things are
literally made out of “no thing,” or nothing. Plasmatic (unformed, chaotic) matter is still a thing; empty space is still
a “thing” (an empty thing, but a thing).

Do you want to become a better person?
Are you ready for a change?
Walking Toward Eternity is Changing Lives!
Is it time for a change? Walking Toward Eternity is an inspiring series designed to help
you live your faith more fully by developing and nurturing characteristics that are essential
to the Christian life. Through daily prayer and meditation with Scripture, you will be drawn
into an intimate and life-changing encounter with Jesus Christ. As you prayerfully reflect on God’s Word, you will begin
to hear the subtle ways that God is speaking to you, and you will be challenged to set aside those things in your life that
keep you from growing closer to him. By putting it into practice, you will be able to make real changes in your life, changes that will make you more like the person God created you to be. Daring to Walk the Walk, the first series of Walking
Toward Eternity, introduces seven key virtues and outlines practical steps for living them out in your life.
Save the date to join us for Walking Toward Eternity, an eight-week experience starting on Thursdays after Labor
Day, at 9:30 am or 7:00 pm, Thursday, September 8. A suggested offering of $20.00 is requested by not required. Reserve your copy today by emailing [email protected].
Experience a Lively Faith in Yourself and in Others:
Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA)
We are preparing for a new season to welcome those adults and children who wish to become Catholic through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Those of
us who are already Catholic didn’t earn it or deserve it—salvation is a gift from God for
which we are to be forever thankful. Serving on one of our RCIA teams or serving as a
sponsor for someone is a chance for you to give to others what has been gifted to you.
We need people like you to help us in various ways in this rewarding and enjoyable ministry. Currently, our greatest
need is finding activity leaders for the 15 children ranging in age from 8-16 who have asked to be baptized during the
Easter Season of 2017. If you think you might like to serve or have questions, please let us hear from you. Please PRAY
that we find team members—we must be able to continue this vital ministry as we serve these persons in need.

Opening Our Hearts to Strengthening Marriages
Bishop Richard J. Malone, Bishop of Buffalo
Recently, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, offered the following challenge: “But nowadays, who is
making an effort to strengthen marriages, to help married couples overcome their problems, to assist
them in the work of raising children and, in general, to encourage the stability of the marriage bond?”
This probing question by Pope Francis in The Joy of Love (Amoris Laetitia) is for all of us: every family, community, and nation. The Holy Father is firm: “No one can think that the weakening of the family as that natural society
founded on marriage will prove beneficial to society as a whole” (Amoris Laetitia, no. 52).
If we care about addressing poverty, promoting the well-being of children, building stronger communities—we
must at the same time care about strengthening marriages and families. The social science is clear on this point.
But a decisive question must be faced in order to move forward: What is marriage?
On June 26, people will be marking the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision one year ago in Obergefell v. Hodges.
Some, following the Court's majority opinion, see this decision as a victory for equality and freedom. But that
opinion is remarkable for what it lacks: a coherent account of what marriage is and what it is for. What makes
marriage different than any other type of relationship? Why should the state have an interest in marriage? Why
should marriage be between only two people?
The Court fails to offer substantial rationale here. It also fails to consider seriously the fact that our culture over
the last several decades has been progressively declining when it comes to strengthening marriage and the family—a decline that leads to cultural breakdown: “There is a failure to realize that only the exclusive and indissoluble union between a man and a woman has a plenary role to play in society as a stable commitment that bears
fruit in new life” (Amoris Laetitia, no. 52).
The Pope keenly observes that “[m]any countries are witnessing a legal deconstruction of the family,
tending to adopt models based almost exclusively on the autonomy of the individual will” (Amoris Laetitia, no. 53). Unfortunately, this has been the case in the United States. Our laws have tended not to put families
and children first, but instead have made an idol of individual autonomy at the expense of truth and the
common good, and even God himself. Civil law is meant to reflect what is true and just, not create or reconstruct it.
Obergefell has changed the law, but it has not changed the truth. Some may think that Obergefell concludes a
conversation, but that conversation is only beginning because the central questions at stake still need a hearing,
and truth, ultimately, cannot be silenced.
So, what is marriage? How is society protecting a child's basic right to be welcomed, raised, and loved by a mother and father if the law no longer recognizes man and woman as necessary to marriage? With malice toward
none and with charity for all, we must advance this conversation and witness.
Today, I encourage those who have not read the Obergefell decision to begin reading the majority opinion and
then the dissenting opinions carefully. Take time over the next several weeks to reflect upon Pope Francis’s The
Joy of Love and to peruse other resources that shed light on the meaning of marriage, like those available on
www.marriageuniqueforareason.org. Consider how you and your family can advance a renewed conversation
about marriage in your community.
Lastly, today let us pray that our hearts be open to one another and to God’s healing grace. May respect and
kindness guide our conversations with one another, especially in our families, communities and nation, and let us
pray for a deeper understanding of the tremendous gift that marriage and family life is to the world: a warm and
welcoming home where a husband and wife, father, mother and their children, strive to know, love and serve the
Lord and one another. May the Holy Spirit inspire in us renewed confidence to witness to the truth of God’s plan
for marriage and the family, attracting others by our own striving to grow in love.

the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Blog on June 26, 2016, www.usccbmedia.blogspot.com. P. 12
Jocelyn Waggoner (Presidenta), Elizabeth Chapman (Vicepresidenta) y Joe Russo (Secretario).
