Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
OUR FATHER IN FAITH
The Letter to the Hebrews today sings a hymn of praise to Abraham and to
his faith, upon which are founded the religions of Judaism, Christianity, and
Islam. Abraham is called “father” in faith by more people on earth than anybody else, numerous as the sands of the seashore or the stars of the heavens.
Hebrews tells us it was this foundational faith that led Abraham to obey God’s
call when he heard it, though he was called to journey to a land he did not
know and told he would father a mighty race through a marriage he thought
was barren. But Abraham’s faith, the author of Hebrews tells us, was his realization of what he hoped for, and the evidence of what he could not see. How
often are we, in simple daily events of our own Christian vocation, called to an
unfamiliar place or told we are to do something we do not believe we can?
How fortunate we are to have Father Abraham as our guide and example!

Prayer for a New Bishop
Almighty and all loving God,
Eternal Shepherd and Guide,
we are grateful for Bishop Lynch
and his twenty years of ministry in our diocese.
During this time of transition, we trust in Your
love,
confident that You will once again give to the Diocese of St. Petersburg
a shepherd who will inspire us to be
Christ’s heart of mercy,
His voice of hope and hands of justice.
Guide our new bishop to enlighten
our hearts and minds with the truth of the Gospel,
the power of the sacraments,
and the desire to serve you in all things.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Retrouvaille, a program
for troubled marriages, marks 28
years of offering hope and healing to
hurting marriages in the Diocese of
St Petersburg and surrounding areas. Fifty-one hurting and searching
couples came to our ministry in the
past year, 19 in February 2016 alone!
The next weekend takes place at The Hampton Inn in
Oldsmar starting on August 19, 2016. Seven followup sessions will take place at Sacred Heart Parish in
downtown
Tampa.
Our Communications contact Barbara Spaulding will
follow up with you by telephone to see if you need additional information, would like Retrouvaille brochures,
or other resources. She can be reached at 228-2240886 or [email protected] if you want to
request materials before she has a chance to call you.
Please visit our website at Retrouvaille.org for more information.
An Invitation from the Office of the Lay Pastoral
Ministry Institute
Pray & Reflect: 19th Sunday of Ordinary Time, August 7th - Is God Calling You to Serve as a Lay Ecclesial Minister in His Church? “For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” Our lives, time,
energy, talents, and treasure, are the only things we have
to invest in our faith. Effective lay ministers/volunteers
need more than a heart for ministry; they also need personal and spiritual maturity, knowledge of theology and
other disciplines and pastoral skills. Lay ministers need
and deserve a formation program with high standards,
effective methods and comprehensive goals. This is
what we, here in the Diocese, work hard to offer to you.
Ask yourself: What “possessions” (materially and intellectually) would be most difficult for me to abandon,
to pursue the things of Christ? Why?
The Lay Pastoral Ministry Institute is different from
ordinary “adult education” because you are part of a
formation program. The purpose of LPMI Year of Discernment is to provide participants with a theological
overview of the Church and Christ’s ministry. Monthly
classes begin on September 10, 2016 and conclude in
April 2017. Interested adults can find brochures and
more details on the LPMI web site at http://dosp.org/
lpmi/. Or, you may contact our office at the Pastoral
Center by phone (727) 344-1611 or email: [email protected]
