Welcome to our celebration of the Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time.! Vatican News reported that Pope Francis signed a decree last month that elevated the celebration of the Memorial of St. Mary Magdalene to a Liturgical Feast. The following is from their news release:! ! “In a letter announcing the change, the Secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Arthur Roche, writes the decision means one ‘should reflect more deeply on the dignity of women, the New Evangelization, and the greatness of the mystery of Divine Mercy.’ Archbishop Roche drew attention to the fact Mary Magdalene was the first witness to the Resurrection, and is the one who announced the event to the Apostles. ‘Saint Mary Magdalene is an example of true and authentic evangelization; she is an evangelist who announces the joyful central message of Easter,’ he writes.! ! ‘The Holy Father Francis took this decision precisely in the context of the Jubilee of Mercy to signify the importance of this woman who showed a great love for Christ and was much loved by Christ,’ writes Archbishop Roche. He also notes Saint Magdalene was referred to as the ‘Apostle of the Apostles’ (Apostolorum Apostola) by Thomas Aquinas, since she announced to them the Resurrection, and they, in turn, announced it to the whole world.! ! ‘Therefore it is right that the liturgical celebration of this woman has the same grade of feast given to the celebration of the apostles in the General Roman Calendar, and shines a light on the special mission of this woman, who is an example and model for every woman in the Church.’”! ! Saint Mary Magdalene is a shining example and role model for women. This Feast Day serves as a special reminder to keep our women’s ministries in our daily prayers and devotions, especially this Friday, on July 22, when we celebrate the Feast Day of St. Mary Magdalene.! ! On the diocesan home front, the status of the Episcopal Transition (meaning the selection of a new Bishop), there has been no change. The most recent update from the Diocesan Communications Department informs us “we remain in a waiting period to hear from the Vatican … Bishop Lynch will be in office until we receive the official announcement from the Vatican.” In reading how bishops are selected on the website of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, it states that “it often takes six to eight monthsand sometimes longer until a new bishop is appointed.” So we wait. When there is news; it will be communicated.! ! Can you believe there are only two weeks left in July? You guessed it, tempus fugit. School starts back up in less than a month; the official start date for all diocesan schools this year is August 10.! ! I hope you are enjoying your summer, spending time with family, getting some rest, and keeping as cool as possible on these hot summer days. I am always encouraging you to read Scripture. Appropriate for this time of year, Pope Francis’ tweet of July 10 at his Pontifex: “Vacations offer a time to rest and to restore the spirit, especially through a more quiet reading of the Gospels.”! ! From the Annunciation to the Crucifixion of her son, Mary can be seen as God’s ultimate validation of free will. Her obedience to the will of God, as conveyed to her in the angel Garbriel’s message, was no less voluntary in its affirmation than the disobedience of the virgin Eve had been in its negation. In the 2nd century, St. Irenaeus, the Bishop of Lyon and a second generation disciple from the Apostle John, wrote: “…so also Mary betrothed to a man but nevertheless still a virgin, being obedient, was made the cause of salvation for herself and for the whole human race. [...]. Thus, the knot of Eve’s disobedience was loosed by the obedience of Mary. What the virgin Eve bound in unbelief, the Virgin Mary loosed through faith.” (Against Heresies, 3.22.4, Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyons.)! ! Mary, as the first human to kiss the face of God and the first to believe in Jesus as her Savior, took her place in Salvation History as the first Christian. She is the one disciple of Jesus who didn’t flee or doubt when all the others fled and doubted, but who stayed and accepted to the very end the burden of being under the Cross. Down through the ages the weeping Mary of the Cross, witnessing her son’s torture and death, stands in solidarity with all believers who also suffer and live under the shadow of the Cross. To control this kind of illegal operations our Dumpster will be locked all the time. This notice will be in the Bulletin for 34 weeks. The City has brought to our attention that the dumpster is kept at the present location in violation of the plan submitted to them initially. So this will be placed back where it is planned to be in future.! IMPORTANT NOTE:! Paper Collection Container! !! Our paper recycle container has not been making any money for the Parish unlike in the earlier days. It brought us only $50.50 (Fifty Dollars and Fifty cents) for the whole year. This container also will be soon removed from the property in the near future. You may not bring any more papers for recycling. This bin together with our own dumpster provide cover for those who want to dump sofas, beds, chairs, TVs and other such items illegally in our property and most of the time we end up taking them to the city dumpster.
