June 26, 2016 - Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Greetings and prayers dear brothers and sisters in Christ. Welcome to our
celebration of the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time.
Today we continue with Bishop Lynch’s Thoughts and Reflections on the Episcopal
Transition. Last week we stopped where Bishop Lynch was describing the Papal
Nuncio’s process when the Nuncio begins to focus on three possible candidates who
seem to “fit the bill” to meet the needs of the diocese.
“When he has his three names, the papal nuncio will then send the files with everything
he has received to the Congregation for Bishops in Rome and it leaves both his hands
and the United States for further scrutiny and ultimately presentation to the Holy
Father. The Congregation for Bishops consists mostly of cardinals residing in Rome but
it was other members as well. They meet every other Thursday from the first Thursday
in October to the last Thursday in June (not dissimilar to the United States Supreme
Court). When the Congregation has all the files in order and translation into Italian of
the input if called for, the matter is given to a cardinal member of the Congregation who
is called the ‘ponens’ which is Latin for ‘postulator’ who presents the names received to
the full Congregation. The papal nuncio to the United States will have sent the files with
a recommendation for first, second, and third choice among the names. The cardinal
‘ponens’ can do the same and recommend his order of candidates, often guided by
discussion from the Congregation’s staff and prefect (‘chairman’ in our language),
currently Cardinal Marc Ouellet. After whatever discussion the members of the
Congregation wish to give to the selection a vote is taken, and generally the candidate
receiving the most votes is the name which is taken to the Holy Father.
Prayer for
a New Bishop
Almighty
and all loving God,
Eternal Shepherd and
Guide, we are grateful
for Bishop Lynch and
his twenty years of
ministry in our
diocese.
The congregation also has an opportunity to signal its pleasure or displeasure with
candidates number two and three but that is a process I choose not to go into here.
During this time
of transition,
we trust in Your love,
confident that
You will once again
give to the Diocese
of St. Petersburg a
shepherd who will
inspire us to be
Christ’s heart of
mercy, His voice
of hope and hands
of justice.
Finally, usually the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation of Bishops sees the Holy
Father sometime on the Saturday following the previous Thursday meeting of the
congregation with the file(s) and the advice of the /uncio and the Congregation. If the
diocese is relatively small and seemingly inconsequential (sorry but we would fit in that
category), the Pope as any CEO of very large multi-national organization, would accept
the proposed name presented to him. If the vacancy is for a place like Chicago or
Washington or /ew York, then the Holy Father might ask for more time to consult, read
and reflect, pray and propose.
Guide our new bishop
to enlighten our hearts
and minds with the
truth of the Gospel,
the power of the
sacraments,
and the desire to
serve you in all things.
By Monday, usually, of the following week the Congregation has contacted the
Apostolic /uncio and asked him to gain the acceptance of the person chosen and a
public announcement follows usually no less than a week after that.”
We ask this through
Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The conclusion of this piece will be published next week when Bishop Lynch closes
his Thoughts & Reflections on the Episcopal Transition with some Frequently Asked Questions.
Next week-end is a long holiday weekend when our nation celebrates Independence
Day. Many travel out of the area and take vacation at this time. Please be aware
and safe in your travels; no texting and dialing while driving – and that expands to
stop signs and traffic signals. Pull into a parking lot or rest area if the phone is
needed. Early reminder that Parish offices are closed next Monday, July 4th.
As we go out today let us reflect on one of today’s Psalms inspirations: The Lord will show us the path to life,
the fullness of joys and delights forever.
Wishing you a blessed week filled with God, His Love and Mercy.

Peter’s Pence 2nd Collection This Weekend
In the second collection today, we are supporting Pope Francis in his charitable works.
The Peter’s Pence Collection is taken up worldwide to support our brothers and sisters on
the margins of society, including victims of war, oppression, and natural disasters. In this Jubilee Year of
Mercy, the collection is an opportunity to join with Pope Francis and be a witness of charity to our suffering
brothers and sisters. Please be generous in today’s collection.

Serve as Someone’s Mentor
In Acts 8:26-40, is the story of Philip, a first-century
evangelist, who was instructed by the angel of the Lord
to travel down a desert road that led from Jerusalem to
Gaza. On his journey, Philip encountered an Ethiopian
eunuch, who was sitting in his chariot, reading the
prophet of Isaiah.
Philip asked him “Do you
understand what you are reading?” He replied, “How
can I, unless someone instructs me.”
Philip didn’t need a second invitation. He explained
the passage the man was reading and then shared the
good news of Jesus with him. The Ethiopian official
was so moved by what he heard that he asked Philip to
baptize him in a nearby pool of water. In Acts 8:39, we
learn that “When they came up out of the water, the
Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away, and the eunuch
saw him no more, but continued on his way rejoicing.”
The difference between this story and countless others
like it that occur every day is that God’s fingerprints are
a little more obvious in the Acts account. It’s clear in
the Bible that God desires for people to understand and
connect with his word. If that means putting someone
in the right place at the right time to help facilitate that
understanding and connection, he will do it, whether
through everyday means or supernatural ones.
