Christ, the Good Shepherd Parish Cristo, el Buen Pastor 633 Porter Avenue • Campbell, Ohio 44405 • (330.755.4141) (330)755-3633 (Español) (330)755-1367 (fax) • The Mission of Christ, the Good Shepherd Parish is to celebrate the Sacraments, share our heritage and traditions, and support one another in living and sharing our faith in this community and throughout the world. 25th Ordinary Sunday September 20, 2015 ’TIS THE GIFT TO BE SIMPLE The Shaker hymn describes a circular journey from innocence to innocence with characteristic brevity: ’Tis the gift to be simple, ’tis the gift to be free. ’Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be. This journey is easier sung about than done. It takes humility and time to recover a second innocence. Titles, positions of honor, money, and power are not requirements of the kingdom of God. Jesus says and demonstrates in today’s Gospel that members of God’s kingdom must hold in their embrace the most inconsequential of persons, for that person is identified with Jesus. This attitude ran counter to the intuition of the world of Jesus’ time, as it does in ours. The simplicity set forth by Jesus requires the shedding of unnecessary, unimportant, false, and burdensome attachments that earthly power demands. Membership in the Kingdom is light enough to put a song in our heart. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. I thought that I could offer something to the community. And, I immediately started praying. I knew the Diocesan Reconfiguration Plan, and the intention to form one parish in the city of Campbell. From the moment that I knew that I would be here, I have been praying for unity. The words of Jesus in his “High Priestly Prayer”, John 17: 1-26, “May they all be one…” have been daily on my lips. So, as I have been here, I have continued to pray for unity. (It has even been the subject of my column before.) And, my prayer has also taken the form of the words at Mass: “Look, we pray, upon the oblation of your Church and, recognizing the sacrificial Victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself, grant that we, who are nourished by the Body and Blood of your Son and filled with his Holy Spirit, may become one body, one spirit in Christ.” One body and one spirit: I pray that we come together at Mass, at events, in “body”. And, I pray that we come together in vision for the future of our parish, in respect and love of each other, “in spirit”. May we be one—in body and in spirit! Each Sunday, you hear me prayer these words for you, for us. Of course, prayer is the first step. Unity requires work, too. I will continue to try to find ways to lead us into greater unity—on micro- and macro-scales. The Sacrament of Reconciliation, Communion at Mass, shared events and ministry, are some of what I can do. And, each of you can work for unity, as well. This may mean forgiveness. This may mean understanding. This may mean patience. This may mean extending ourselves to invite and include. It may mean giving another person a new start. It may mean challenging assumptions. It means not harboring judgments. It means not staying only with those with whom we are comfortable. We are in the image of God, in the image of the Trinity. We are called to unity at the very core of our Christian identity. Through work and prayer, we can become who we are. I pray that we may all be one! God bless you, Fr. Significa no albergar juicios. Que Dios te bendiga, Padre Conoboy 25TH SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME - SEPTEMBER 20, 2015 • 3 Memorial Flames at St. Joseph the Provider The Rosary is prayed 1/2 hour before Mass. Sacrifice is not a word that many people like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. However, the literal meaning of sacrifice is “to make holy,” from the words “sacer” = sacred and “facere” = to make. In other words, we make our lives holy by sharing our gifts in the service of God.
