Kostner Ave. Chicago, IL 60652-2196 Next Sunday: MISSION APPEAL FOR THE DIOCESE OF BELIZE CITY AND BELMOPAN Our parish will soon be visited by the Most Rev. Christopher Glancy, C.S.V., the Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Belize City and Belmopan. He is a member of the Viatorian Community with its U.S. head-quarters in Arlington Heights, IL, and is himself from Moline, IL. Bishop Glancy was associate pastor and pastor for 12 years in Corozal Town, Belize. He was ordained bishop on May 5, 2012. The Diocese of Belize City and Belmopan covers the en re country of Belize. It is located in Central America, and borders Mexico, Guatemala and the Caribbean Sea. There are 13 parishes in Belize, with 130 mission churches in the villages. The Catholic Church also manages 114 elementary schools, 11 high schools and 3 junior colleges. As with most of the schools in the country, these are Church/State schools, with the government paying teachers’ salaries and the families and churches raising funds to support other educa onal needs. There are presently 32 priests serving in the diocese, so many villages have Mass once a month and communion services lead by lay ministers on the other Sundays. We are blessed with six congrega ons of women religious and five congrega ons of religious men serving in the diocese. Diocesan Commissions encourage the growth of ministry in the following areas: Liturgy, Youth Ministry, Family Ministry, Adult Faith Forma on, Lay Ministry, Social Concerns, and Educa on. Challenges that we see in na on of Belize include: gang violence, unemployment and underemployment, access to educa on beyond elementary school, many single parent homes, children living with their grandparents, elderly who are abandoned, human trafficking for pros tu on. Bishop Glancy will be with us to share a bit about the Roman Catholic Church in Belize, and ask for our support. Fi eenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 10 2016 Dear Parishioners of St. Barbara, Although I was introduced last week at all the Masses, I would like tell you a bit more about me. First of all, I am a "Newyorican." For those who do not know what that means, it's a person born in New York of parents from Puerto Rico. However, I am not a "Newyorican" in the strict sense of the word since, a er age three, I was taken to Puerto Rico and raised there. I grew up surrounded by a nurturing, deeply religious, and hardworking family. They ins lled in me the drive to work and study hard. So, a er finishing college there, I decided to return to the United States to work in the field of electronics. During the years that followed, I began to grow closer to the faith my parents passed on to me. I got involved in church and felt the call to ministry. Nine years later, I finally realized that God wanted me to give more from what I had received. I joined Mundelein seminary in 1997 and thanks to a grant from the Miller Company, I was sent to Belgium to study philosophy. Upon finishing there, I returned to the United States to complete my Masters in Divinity. I was ordained in 2003 with fourteen others, and was assigned to Santa Maria del Popolo Parish in Mundelein. A er 5 years, I was assigned to St. Cletus Parish in La Grange where I stayed for 7 years. My last assignment before being assigned to St. Barbara was Christ the King Parish in Chicago. My years at SMDP and St Cletus showed me the beauty of the faith of the Catholic people, and also opened my eyes to the universality of the Catholic Church. Worshiping together with people of different races and languages, joined by the one language we all understand— Love—made me realize that each community that gathers in the name of Christ Jesus, is a taste of what is to come: Heaven! It can be said then, that the con nuous goal of each one of us, as Catholic Chris ans, should be to help those around us taste a li le piece of Heaven here on earth through unity in love. As I begin with you this new period in my life, I would like to let you know that I am commi ed to do the part the Lord has called me to do as a priest—to help you taste the fruits of what is to come here on earth, and beyond. Therefore, I ask for your prayers that I may do this task well. May God bless our journey together, and con nue to guide and enrich us along the way that one day we may rejoice as one Holy People, in the presence of God the Father in Heaven.
