From the Pastor’s Desk...
Saint Paul reminds us in the second le er to the
Corinthians, “But we have this treasure in earthen
vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the
power will be of God and not from ourselves.” (2 Cor
4:7) It isn’t hard to understand Paul’s image of us as
“earthen vessels”; most of us can relate to feeling fragile
and some mes even a bit cracked. Like the po ery mug
a child might make in an art class and give as a gi to his
father, our life may be far from perfect and a bit out of
shape, but our life is well-loved and holds great worth for
God, our Creator.
In our readings today, we find three men who are clearly
“earthen vessels”, but who are also found to have
greater worth than they might first have perceived.
Isaiah, Paul, and Peter are each brought into an
encounter with God that leaves them both humbled and
exalted. Their stories remind us that when we meet the
holiness of God head-on, we are confronted with the
imperfec on of our humanity. Compared to the
awesomeness of God, who are we with all our limita ons
and imperfec ons? God answers that ques on by
reminding us that, even though we are “earthen vessels”,
we are also God’s crea on. And in God’s eyes we are
precious, worthy enough to hold the treasure of God’s
Holy Spirit.
At Mass each Sunday we echo the words of the Roman
centurion who exclaimed, “Lord I am not worthy that you
should enter under my roof, but only say the word and
my soul shall be healed.” Our worth comes from God.
When we open our hearts to Jesus, the Word of God
made flesh, we discover that worth. It is a worth not
based on human standards or human understanding.
God sees beyond the limita ons of our humanity. And as
God exalts us in our humanity, we are then challenged to
be one with God in li ing up the lowly and exal ng all
those who are made to feel unworthy.
This is the challenge of the Jubilee of Mercy. When we
find someone feeling hopeless and dejected, and when
the words of Simon Peter, “Depart from me, Lord, for I
am a sinful man,” seem to be ringing true, how do we
bring God’s mercy to bear? Our first response may be
one of shame and humilia on, but God’s is not. God
does not say, “I reject you, sinful human that you are”
but “I love you, child of God!” Jesus in the gospel says to
Simon Peter, “Do not be afraid.” Jesus calls Peter from
disgrace to grace, from indignity to glory. And, hopefully
we can be unafraid to do the same for one another. Yes,
we are all earthen vessels. And yes, we all hold within us
the amazing treasure of God divine presence.

"No temas."
Ojalá no tengamos

Abs nence from meats is to
be observed by all Catholics 14
years old and older on Ash
Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent.
Fas ng is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by
all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet
59. Those who are bound by this may take only one
full meal. Two smaller meals are permi ed if
necessary to maintain strength according to one's
needs, but ea ng solid foods between meals is not
permi ed.
The special Paschal fast and abs nence are
prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy
Saturday.
By the threefold discipline of fas ng, almsgiving,
and prayer the Church keeps Lent from Ash
Wednesday un l the evening of Holy Thursday. All
of the faithful and the catechumens should
undertake the serious prac ce of these three
tradi ons. Failure to observe peniten al days
totally or a substan al number of such days must be
considered serious.
Our US Bishops issued in 1966 this statement on
peniten al observance: "On Weekdays of Lent, we
strongly recommend par cipa on in daily Mass and
self-imposed observances of fas ng. In light of
grave human needs which weigh on the Chris an
conscience in all seasons, we urge par cularly
during Lent, generosity to local, na onal and world
programs of sharing of all things needed to translate
our duty to penance into a means of implemen ng
the right of the poor to their part of our
abundance."

Jubilee Year of Mercy
During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis calls us to
share with everyone the tender compassion of God that we
ourselves have experienced. In today’s Gospel, Luke uses a
special Greek word conveying just such tenderness. In the
other Gospels, Jesus calls the disciples to be “fishers,” haleis,
the same word that means catching fish with hooks or nets,
to be killed and eaten. But Luke uses zogron, from zoe or “life,” meaning
“catch or gather people alive,” as animal lovers
capture without harming, rescue from “the wild” for a be er life, and
protect in aquarium or zoo, tenderly cared for by professionals
commi ed to the creatures’ well-being. So in Luke’s vision—and Pope
Francis’ as well—we who have been “caught alive” by God’s mercy
ourselves are to become “missionaries of mercy” during this Jubilee
Year of Mercy, rescuing fellow sinners from danger and gathering them
into Jesus’ community to enjoy fullness of life.
