The Germanic influence was strong in those days, reflected in a series of questions posed to the candidate about his intentions. The priest's role in the celebration of Mass had by then come to the fore, as the ritual notes that Mass vestments must be worn, the hands of the priest must be anointed with chrism, and a chalice with wine and water and a paten with a host must be given. Up to then, the ordination rite had stressed the presbyter as a collaborator with the bishop and a member of the order of presbyters. Then, in a not-so-subtle shift, the presbyter came to be seen as a "priest" designated to celebrate the Mass and, as the prayer suggests, to touch the chalice. By these days, remember, the cup had long vanished from Communion for the laity. A thousand years ago, today's patterns were already in place. The priest no longer saw himself as a member of a council of elders, a presbytery, and in some dioceses he had little influence over the bishop. Instead, he was either a pastor, with relationship to the eucharistic community in the parish, or he was a priest monk, offering Mass for the salvation of the departed or the intentions of the living. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) www.stpiuslombard.org PAGE 4 Year of Mercy Reflecting on God’s Word "The newness of the Gospel lies in the giving of oneself, giving the heart, to those who actually dislike us, who harm us, to our enemies. The Gospel is a new message that is difficult to carry forward. In a word, it means to go behind Jesus. Follow him. Imitate him . . . Jesus' response to the Father is: 'I shall do your will'. And indeed, in the Mount of Olives he says to the Father: 'Thy will be done'. And thus he gives his life, not for his friends but for his enemies!" —Pope Francis 15th Sunday of Ordinary Time-C-July 10, 2016 When Jesus told the parable of the good Samaritan, he asked his questioner, “Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the man who fell in with robbers?” The answer came, “The one who treated him with compassion” (The New American Bible translation). Jesus told him (and us) “Then go and do the same.” ————————————————————————— Mercy has a face. Some hospitals in our region have a corps of volunteers called Good Samaritans. They do all manner of kindness so that the sick can get the care, the treatment they need. Mercy has the face of real live people, those who (1) love God, (2) love self, and (3) love the other by being the neighbor. We hear Moses, in the fifth book (Deuteronomy) for God’s Chosen People, say to them – and now to us today: this command to love like God is not too mysterious or remote. Who needs my acts of love today – perhaps even beyond my close circle of family and friends? Who needs a ride to church, to doctor, to grocery that I can give? How can I manifest the mystery of mercy by being a face of mercy? ———————————————————————Could anyone object to Jesus' supreme lesson in mercy, the parable of the Good Samaritan? Jesus' devoutly religious audience certainly did! Scant sympathy for anyone foolish enough to travel crime-ridden "Jericho Highway" alone. Much sympathy for priest and Levite, hurrying to assigned temple ministry, unwilling to risk ritual impurity through hands-on mercy. No sympathy for Jesus' scandalous hero. Samaritans were religious apostates and political enemies. Jesus challenges them--and us--to seek God's presence not only in liturgical beauty but in a fellow traveler's self-inflicted misfortunes. See God's presence even in someone outside the law, whose hands-on mercy springs not from religious obligation but from the heart's instinctive goodness. Since Jesus became our "Good Samaritan" despite our foolishness and sins, who are we to ration our mercy? "Who is my neighbor?" (Luke 10:29). The next person we see who needs hands-on mercy! No conditions, no limits, no exceptions. Especially in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Jesus commands, "Go and do likewise" (10:37). --Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Jesus mandates compassion. He can mandate compassion because biblical compassion is not a feeling or emotion (one cannot mandate emotions, they just spontaneously happen). Notice that it is irrelevant to Jesus whether someone feels guilty or not (guilt is always an emotion or feeling). But biblical compassion is a moral decision. Guilt may indeed lead to behavioral change, but not always. Compassion by Biblical definition is always an intentional act or behavior. The sin about which this parable speaks is indifference. The opposite of compassion is apathy. Therefore Jesus often uses the image of awareness as characteristic of true love. The priest and temple official who passed by the wounded man did nothing to harm him; but they did nothing to help him either. So we often pray: “I have sinned by what I have done and by what I have failed to do.” Here’s a possible description of Biblical compassion: ‘Compassion is my personal conviction that a hurting or needy person (or group of people) calls upon me for concrete, effective help and that I obligate myself to extend that help to the best of my ability—even at some personal sacrifice on my part.” Who is the neighbor to the wounded man? The one who showed compassion. The point of the parable is unambiguous: Go and do the same. —Fr. July 10, 2016 PAGE 7 Eagle Scout Project Dear Family, Friends and Scouters; My name is Sean Luner, I am a Life Scout and I will be going to a summer scout camp for two weeks as a leader. I am currently working on the rank of Eagle Scout. Eagle is the final and highest rank in the Boy Scouting program and the most difficult to achieve. To obtain this rank, I need to organize and carry out a project that will benefit the community. This will test all of the skills I have learned in scouting including leadership, organization and service. For my project, I will be refurbishing cellar doors, replacing the inner wooden door, painting the stairs and laying concrete on the foundation of the cellar doors that will take place at St. Pius X Parish. This project will preserve and protect the outer entrance of St. Pius X Parish office. An Eagle project is a test of the Scouts skills that he has acquired throughout the years of scouting. An Eagle project needs to be funded completely by the Scout. In order for my project to succeed, the funding required is around $375.00. This not only includes cost of materials but the cost of permits and tools that may be needed. I humbly ask for donations at this time. I have no guideline to how much, only give what you can. Any surplus money left from this project will benefit another Eagle project. I personally will not keep any of the surplus donated money. My goal is to have the donations collected no later than August 1, 2016. Thank you for your time, donations and past support. Please contact me with any questions regarding this request. Please send donations and make checks payable to Sean Luner, 549 N. Kramer Ave Lombard, IL 60148 (630-276-8021). Going on vacation? Giving is easy while you are away this summer.
