Help others in need to help feed those in
need. We ask that families take advantage of the
BOGO (buy one get one) offers at the local
supermarkets, and donate the second item to the
St. Louis Food Pantry. They can be dropped
off in the bins located in the vestibule of the
church. We will then collect them and store them
for others that come to the parish office in need
of food. What a great way to help our neighbors
and set an example to those around us to do the
same!

PRIMERA LECTURA (1 Reyes 17: 17-24)

testigo de la energía del único Dios de la vida y así confirmar sus palabras con gestos y acciones que significaban
la presencia de Dios y sus consecuencias para todos.
SEGUNDA LECTURA(Gálatas 1: 11-19)
A todo el mundo nos toca respaldar nuestras palabras con gestos y hechos que confirmen la veracidad de lo que
expresan. También dentro de la comunidad existen diferentes formas de entender y surgen, a veces, dudas. Por
eso Pablo tiene que hacer referencia a la tradición esencial de la comunidad de Jesús cuando defiende la libertad
del cristiano.
EVANGELIO (Lucas 7:11-17)
La narración de hoy es una imagen que hace una representación teatral e histórica a la vez, de cómo es la vida
y cómo puede ser cuando descubrimos en ella a Dios. El es quien puede provocar los cambios y hacer que esta
vida de muerte se convierta en vida de alegría y fraternidad.
Every Wednesday and the first Sunday of each month our team goes to Baptist Hospital to give Communion to the
patients. You can go Wednesdays or just the first Sundays. Baptist Hospital will be having a training for Eucharistic Ministers
to work at Baptist in the Spring.
You must be a Eucharistic Minister. Attend the 2-hours training session. Be able to take a TB test and a Flu shot
administered by Baptist. Have a background check. If you have had this done, the Archdiocese will send your information

Midnight Musings / Pensamientos de Media Noche
The Days Are Long, But the Years Are Short
A couple of weeks ago we had a Mass and a pro
gram to welcome families who will be new to our Covenant
School next year. As I greeting one couple who regularly
attend Mass at St. Louis, I remarked: “Why are you here?
How can your daughter be old enough?” But she was. I remember when they were married and when their first child
was born. What happened to that time?
This experience reminded me of the saying: “The
days are long, but the years are short,” by Gretchen Craft
Rubin, an American author, blogger and speaker. A graduate of Yale law school, she clerked for a while for Sandra
Day O’Connor at the Supreme Court. She found her niche
as an author and lecturer. The quote is from her 2009
book: The Happiness Project: Or Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right,
Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun.
How to deal with passing time is an illusive challenge that has befuddled humans as long as we have been
around. Psalm 90:12 prays: “Teach us to number our days
aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart.” It means that
we need to count the days that are ours– and they are limited– so that we can live wisely and well.
I seem to have attended many funerals of priests
recently. (The longer we live, the more funerals we will attend.) One man had been my pastor years ago; he died in
his eighties. But last week it was a peer, with whom I attended the seminary. Every funeral is a reminder that none
of us gets out of here alive. How time passes before we
know it! How we use time is the question.
This weekend’s readings remind us of our dependence on God as we live our lives. The two widows of the
scriptures represent neediness. In a male dominated patriarchal society women could face a perilous existence.
Girls went from the protection of their fathers to the house
of their husbands. Without a husband the women were
very much alone– no safety net of social programs to support them. The Old testament widow and her child were
hungry. The gospel widow lost her only son on whom she
depended. Yet God was with them: “ I will praise you, Lord,
for you have rescued me” ( Responsorial Psalm 30:22).
We face no moment of time alone; this is the
promise of Jesus: “I am the way and the truth and the life”
(John 14:6). Days may seem long, years may pass swiftly,
yet all time is his, as the Easter Vigil acclaims: “Christ, yesterday and today, the Beginning and the End, the Alpha
and the Omega. All time belongs to him and all the ages.”
The risen Lord helps us to use time wisely, filling it with faith
and love, until our earthly time, be it long or short, becomes
eternity in Christ.

Hace pocas semanas tuvimos la Misa para dar la
bienvenida a las familias que serán parte del Covenant School
el próximo año. Mientras saludaba a una pareja que asiste
regularmente a las Misas en St. Louis, les dije “¿Por qué están

cuando ellos se casaron y cuando nació su primer bebé. ¿Qué

Cómo tratar con el tiempo que pasa es un reto irreal
que ha perturbado a los humanos desde que estamos aquí. El
Salmo 90: 12 dice: “Enséñanos la medida exacta de nuestros
días para que adquiramos un corazón sensato.” Significa que
tenemos que contar los días que son nuestros - y son limitados
- para así poder vivirlos bien y sabiamente.
Ultimamente he tenido que asistir a muchos funerales
de sacerdotes. (Mientras más años vivamos a más funerales
asistiremos.) Uno de ellos fue mi párroco, hace muchos años; el
murió en sus ochenta y pico. Pero la semana pasada fue uno de
mis compañeros de seminario. Cada funeral nos recuerda que
ninguno de nosotros sale de aquí vivo. Cómo pasa el tiempo y
uno no se da cuenta. La pregunta es cómo hacemos uso de
este tiempo.
Las lecturas de éste fin de semana nos recuerdan de
nuestra dependencia de Dios al vez que vivimos nuestras vidas.
Las dos viudas de las escrituras representan la necesidad. En
una sociedad patriarcal dominada por los hombres, las mujeres
tienen una existencia peligrosa. Las niñas pasaban de la
protección de los padres a la casa del marido. Sin un marido las
mujeres estaban solas - sin apoyo de nadie. La viuda del Antigüo
Testamento y su niño tenían hambre. La viuda del Evangelio
había perdido a su único hijo del que ella dependía. Aun así
Dios estaba con ellas: “Bendito el Señor, que me ha mostrado
su ternura”(Salmo 30:22).
No tenemos ningun tiempo solos; esta es la promesa de
Jesús: “Yo soy el camino, la verdad y la vida” (Juan 14: 6). Los
días parecen largos, los años pasan suavemente, aun así todo el
tiempo es de El, como clama la Vigilia Pascual: “Cristo, ayer y
hoy. el Principio y el Fin, el Alpha y el Omega. Todo el tiempo
le pertenece a él, y todas las edades.” El Señor resucitado nos
ayuda a hacer uso del tiempo sabiamente, llenándolo de fe y
amor, hasta que nuestro tiempo terrenal, sea corto o largo, sea
eternamente en Cristo.
