Short Sermons to Live By
He shed His blood for our ransom and
purification, so that we might be
redeemed from our wretched state of
bondage and cleansed from all sin. But to
ensure that the memory of so great a gift
would abide with us for ever, He left His
Body as food and His Blood as drink for
the faithful to consume in the form of
bread and wine.

The word “Eucharist” comes from the Greek word eucharistia which means
“thanksgiving.” It is through the Eucharist which we receive the Lord’s greatest gift to
us, and it should be in thanksgiving and delight which we receive it. This holy day
should also remind us of all those things for which we should be thankful. Gratitude is
at the basis of a life of stewardship. It is through thanksgiving for all we have received,
especially the Holy Body and Blood of Christ through the Eucharist, that we find the
motivation and the commitment to be good stewards.

Friends,
Two years ago the CTK Youth Ministry team came to you with a vision of building a Cathedral youth ministry
experience that could effectively reach every teen in our parish community and draw them into a life of
discipleship. We dreamed of creating youth ministry experiences that would engage teens in joyful
community and transform lives through powerful encounters with God in the sacraments and prayer.
We invited you to partner with us in making this vision a reality by taking part in our Youth365 fundraiser
and you stepped up, partnering with us to raise over $38,000 to make this dream a reality. Two years later,
we are proud to say your partnership has had great effect.
In the past two years we have seen incredible growth across our youth ministry efforts including:

54% growth in attendance at our middle school EDGE experience

63% growth in attendance at our high school Life Teen experience

Doubled upperclassmen retention post-Confirmation

Addition of two more weekday bible study groups, annual spring retreat, & new summer programming

Addition of a new upperclassmen leadership & formation program, EMPOWER

And much more
Our dream is alive in the teens at CTK, and it is with deep gratitude and humility that we come to you again to
invite you to partner with us as we continue to realize and develop this vision.
From now until the end of June, you will find our 2016 Youth365 Big Board in the gathering space between
the Cathedral and Kenny Hall. The Big Board has donation amounts between 1 and 365 dollars, each
corresponding to a day of the next year ($1 invests in July 1st, $2 in July 2nd, and so on). We invite you to
consider investing in the spiritual lives of the teens of our parish by choosing an amount to donate between
$1 and $365 going to support our five youth ministry experiences.
Donations are tax deductible and can be made online or by mail in honor of your own children or other loved
ones. You may also choose an amount corresponding to an important anniversary, birthday, or other
meaningful date. In return for the blessing of your support our Youth Ministry Team and teens commit to
praying for you and your intentions as your date comes.
For more information on Youth365 or to make a donation, visit www.CTKyouth.com or the Big Board soon.
Thank you for dreaming with us. Thank you for helping transform the lives of teens.
With Gratitude,
Nick Labrie & Colleen Beringer

May Crowning Mass
The last all-school Mass of the year was a busy one at CKS. Second graders,
dressed in their First Communion attire, served as lectors and gift bearers, Mary
was crowned, and awards were given.
A number of scholarships and awards
were presented to outstanding CKS
students. Sixth grader, Mary
Elizabeth Westenberger was the
recipient of the Tim Angulo
Scholarship. Seventh grader, Jaylen
Mallett, was presented the Blessed
Trinity Book Award and seventh
graders, Ana Boyd and Thomas
Rudolph, were winners of the PVA
Scholarships.
A big thank you goes out to the
Cathedral Flower Guild and our
second grade moms who lovingly
prepared 45 flower crowns and
25 boutonnieres for our 2nd

crowns and boutonnieres remind
us all that we must prepare for
the generous gift that the Lord
gives at His table. 5

CORPUS CHRISTI SUNDAY
MAY 29, 2016
Totally Catholic by Fr. Jose Kochuparampil
WE ARE THE ‘CORPUS CHRISTI’
Of all the people, we, Catholic Christians, believe we have a unique identity because of
our incorporation through Baptism into the Mystical Body of Christ in the world. On
this Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
(Corpus Christi). While this solemnity affirms our fundamental belief in the true, real
and substantial presence of Jesus in the consecrated Host (Body of Christ) and Wine
(Blood of Christ), this solemn celebration calls on us to delve deep into our own
existential reality.
On June 21, 2013 during his Wednesday audience at St. Peter’s square Pope Francis
said: “ We are all in a relation to each other and we all come together to form one living
body, deeply connected to Christ.” This concept, of us as the Church that forms the
body of Christ, is beautifully expressed by St. Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians:
“For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body,
though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized
into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one
Spirit.” (12:12-13).
The Cathedral Flower Guild is
seeking sponsors for the weekly altar
flowers. Both the sponsor’s name and
the name of the person being
honored will be printed in the
Sunday bulletin on the weekend the
flowers appear on the altar.
In the article titled “Catholic Church is the Mystical Body of Christ” Fr. William G.
Most writes: “The Church, the Mystical Body, exists on this earth, and is called the
Church militant, because its members struggle against the world, the flesh and the
devil. The Church suffering means the souls in Purgatory. The Church triumphant is
the Church in heaven. The unity and cooperation of the members of the Church on
earth, in Purgatory, in Heaven is also called the Communion of Saints.” Since the
members in the earthly, (Church militant), heavenly (Church triumphant) and
purgatorial (Church suffering) ‘Church’ are related to each other by profession of the
same faith, by reception of the same Sacraments, and by living of the same Mission (the
mission of Jesus), it is my view that the Mystical Body of Christ (Corpus Christi) is
made up of all these three segments.
The cost of sponsorship is $150 for
the main altar; $100 for each side
altar; and $60 for the Parish Hall. The
Flower Guild will select the
arrangements; and the colors will be
compatible with the Cathedral colors
and feast days. The Cathedral
arrangements will remain on the
altars for the following week.
At the Holy Mass we receive the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus. In John 6: 56
Jesus says: “He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.” As
blood runs through all our body parts making it a single vibrant organism, so too the
Eucharistic sharing of the Body and Blood of Christ (our spiritual life-blood) keeps us,
Catholic Christians, (doesn’t matter one is on earth, heaven, or purgatory; the latter two
received the precious Body and Blood of Jesus during their life on earth) one single
vibrant organism—the Mystical Body of Christ whose head is Jesus.
If you are interested in learning more
about the program please contact
Cathy Thurmond,
[email protected]
or 404-352-3513.
This explanation would suffice it to understand our unique identity in the world. We
are the living body of Christ in today’s world. Yes, through our participation in the
Eucharistic meal there exists an ontological existential difference between us and our
brothers and sisters of other Christian denominations. When we worthily receive the
Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus there takes place a transformation in us as we
become part of the Body and Blood of Jesus. We are being configured into the image of
Jesus.
And this configuration is essential as we live in the world. Because, using St. Paul’
words, though we live in the world we are not of the world. This to happen Jesus is to
be alive and active in us. “For though we live in the world we are not carrying on a
worldly war, for the weapons of our warfare are not worldly but have divine power to
destroy strongholds” (2Cor.10:3). It’s Jesus who provides us those ‘weapons’ for our
‘warfare.’
In the wider sense Corpus Christi is to be understood as the People of God in
communion with the Pope and the Bishops. And we, the past, present and future
members, of this communion form the Mystical Body of Christ. And that is the Corpus
Christi in its wider sense—the Christ who is present and very much alive and active
each and every day in the world.
The flowers on the Mary
Altar were given in
Thanksgiving for answered
prayers by an anonymous
donor.

WELCOME FROM THE PASTOR AND CATHEDRAL
COMMUNITY
Dear Friends in Christ,
Welcome! On behalf of Archbishop Wilton Gregory, the Clergy,
the staff, and the whole Cathedral community, I welcome you to
the Cathedral of Christ the King. I pray that as you step into the
Cathedral, you not only experience the beauty of the
surroundings but also the vibrant spirit of the community
gathered.
We are an active parish of close to 6,000 families and over one
hundred ministries. Our mission statement to “Know, Love and
Serve as Jesus Did” is fulfilled by the sharing our gifts of time,
talent and treasure. If you are new, it is my hope that you will
join us and become part of this wonderful community. If you are
just visiting, it is a blessing to have you here and thank you for
worshiping with us. We hope you will come again.
If you would like to learn more about our community, you can
visit our website at www.cathedralofchristtheking.org. If you
would like to register at the parish, you can visit our reception
desk for a registration form.
I pray that your visit to the Cathedral was enjoyable and that you
truly experienced the goodness of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Prayers and Blessings,
Msgr. Frank McNamee, Rector
