Potato Parents
CKS 6th graders recently took a turn
as parents, with five-pound bags of
potatoes playing the role of their babies. As part of the school’s Family
Life curriculum, the students were
responsible for caring for these children for two days. This meant holding them during class and procuring
babysitting while they attended after-school activities or appointments – exposing
them to the responsibilities and frequent inconveniences of parenthood. At the
end of the project, the CKS chapter of the NJHS, along with the 7th grade Girl
Scouts, collected and transported the potatoes to Toco Hills Community Alliance.
As an outgrowth of the Family Life Unit, and the Potato Baby Project, the 6th
grade collected baby items to benefit the Pregnancy Aid Clinic.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
APRIL 3, 2016
Totally Catholic
Fr. Jose Kochuparampil
THERE IS ALWAYS EASTER AFTER GOOD FRIDAY
Rain or shine the redemptive work of Christ will continue in the world through His Church till
the end of times. This is what we learn looking at Church’s millennia-old history. And this is
exactly what we see looking at what is happening around us.
The case in point is Iraq, the cradle of Christianity in the Middle East, where genocide has been
going on ever since the Islamic State took control of the Christian dominated areas in that
country and Syria. St. Thomas and St. Jude Thaddeus are the apostles who sowed the seeds of
faith in that land of the ancient civilization.
Just few days ago the Catholic News Agency reported that four Iraqi young men, from the
seminary in Qaraqosh, Mosul in Iraq (seminary is non-existent since 2014) would be ordained
transitional deacons on March 19 in a church-turned-refugee-camp in Ankawa, Erbil. By the
time you read this piece they would already be deacons.
Speaking to the Catholic News Agency one of the would be ordinandi, Seminarian Remi
Marzina Momica said: “People want hope, and when they see that there are four young people
who will become deacons and after a few months they will be priests, that will give them hope
and the power to stay.” The Christians are a condemned lot in that part of world by the fundamentalist Islamic extremists. The persecution continues unabated. So many thousands laid
down their lives for the sake of their faith.
Father George Jahola, the priest who accompanied these young men during the time of their
formation said these seminarians “chose this church specifically to demonstrate their closeness
to the people who suffer.” It is amazing to note that 90 per cent of the members of the
Syriac-Catholic diocese in Erbil are refugees. To the people who continue to suffer inexplicably
God gives this precious gift of vocation as a sign of His continued presence and
accompaniment with them as He had been with the Jewish people during their journey to the
Promised Land.
There is a beautiful story narrated in the book of Acts of the Apostles chapter 5. In it the
apostles, Peter and John, were brought in before the Council to be tried. At the end of the
questioning and the defendants’ testimony the Council got enraged and they wanted to kill the
apostles. At that time one of the council members, Gamaliel, a learned Pharisee made the
following observation: “So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let
them alone; for if this plan or this undertaking is of men, it will fail; but if it is of God, you will
not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God.”
Howsoever severe the onslaught might be no one in the world can ever finish off the Church
and her divinely mandated saving action. Because it is of God no earthly power can ever wipe
away her saving presence from the face of the earth at any point in time. The power of the risen
Lord is active and at work in the Church.
The enemies of Jesus thought they succeeded in eliminating him from the face of the earth.
Contrary to their expectation and conviction Jesus defeated death and came back to life. And
his life and power are there in all who believe in him.
The Cathedral Flower Guild is
seeking sponsors for the weekly
altar flowers. Both the sponsor’s
name and the name of the
person being honored will be
printed in the Sunday bulletin on
the weekend the flowers appear
on the altar.
The cost of sponsorship is $150
for the main altar; $100 for each
side altar; and $60 for the Parish
Hall. The Flower Guild will
select the arrangements; and the
colors will be compatible with
the Cathedral colors and feast
days. The Cathedral
arrangements will remain on the
altars for the following week.
If you are interested in learning
more about the program please
contact Cathy Thurmond,
[email protected]
or 404-352-3513.
In the beginning the followers of Jesus were mercilessly persecuted by their adversaries. Down
through the centuries the Church withstood all the persecutions and came out with flying
colors. As the adage goes “the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church” the Holy Mother
Church isn’t ever afraid of challenges and crises.
In Matthew 7: 25 we read: “And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and
beat upon that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.”
The ordination of these four young men in Iraq in the midst of the Iraqi Church’s existential
struggle brings light, hope and optimism to a people who have been wandering in darkness
and utter hopelessness. The resurrection of Jesus that we celebrated past Sunday conveys the
powerful message ‘there is Easter after the Good Friday.’ Yes, there is Easter after the Good
Friday in everyone’s life.

WELCOME FROM THE PASTOR AND CATHEDRAL
COMMUNITY
Dear Friends in Christ,
Welcome! On behalf of Archbishop Wilton Gregory, the Clergy,
the staff, and the whole Cathedral community, I welcome you to
the Cathedral of Christ the King. I pray that as you step into the
Cathedral, you not only experience the beauty of the
surroundings but also the vibrant spirit of the community
gathered.
We are an active parish of close to 6,000 families and over one
hundred ministries. Our mission statement to “Know, Love and
Serve as Jesus Did” is fulfilled by the sharing our gifts of time,
talent and treasure. If you are new, it is my hope that you will
join us and become part of this wonderful community. If you are
just visiting, it is a blessing to have you here and thank you for
worshiping with us. We hope you will come again.
If you would like to learn more about our community, you can
visit our website at www.cathedralofchristtheking.org. If you
would like to register at the parish, you can visit our reception
desk for a registration form.
I pray that your visit to the Cathedral was enjoyable and that you
truly experienced the goodness of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Prayers and Blessings,
Msgr. Frank McNamee, Rector
