Dear Parish Family:
Fr. Ricky asked me to write this letter for him.
So, what’s been happening in the parish since I last
wrote? Well, it’s Tuesday morning, 24 May, and I was
wondering how to make the letter interesting and
informative. I couldn’t think of any great theological
item and couldn’t think of anything funny, so I
remembered something from my school days (yes,
students, you will from time to time, remember what you
learned in school) and that’s your letter for this week.
I remembered that when I would have a difficult time
writing an essay, the teacher would tell me to get a
pencil and paper and start writing – anything – just
write! So, because I’m not using pencil and paper, and
am at the computer keyboard, I’ll ‘let’er rip’ and see
what happens.
Last night I attended the Parish Corporate Board
meeting. I just had the thought that maybe, and that’s a
big maybe, you would like to know what business was
discussed, so here it is. The board:
• A) Approved the parish operating and capital
budgets for fiscal year 2016 -2017.
• B) Approved the school operating and capital
budgets for fiscal year 2016 – 2017.
• C) Authorized the pastor to sign teacher contracts
for the new school year.
• D)) Authorized the pastor to spend corporate funds
for all approved budget items.
• E) Authorized the pastor to enter into the contract
with Watson Refrigeration Company for the
installation of the air conditioning in the school and
make payments according to the contract.
So, how is that from a blank mind?
As you read this, it will be 29 May, the Solemnity of The
Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi).
School is on summer break and the preparation for the
installation of the school air conditioning began on
Friday afternoon, immediately after the students left.
We are now in the Church’s season of Ordinary Time
that lasts until the first Sunday of Advent on 27
November 2016. Beginning next Sunday we will be
wearing green vestments at Mass.
This has now reached the second page on my screen,
and, like my homilies, I want to keep it short. That
reminds me (Don’t you love it when I get a ‘that reminds
me’) of a quasi-prayer I once learned about giving
homilies, “Dear Lord, let me say such wonderful stuff,
and poke me when I’ve said enough”. I think I just got
poked!
I wish you a safe, faith filled week!

Querida Familia Parroquial:
escribe!
alguna
vez
aprendí
acerca
de
dar

During the First World War, prior to the advent of
the USO, the Knights ran hospitality centers for
troops at home and in Europe, from England and
France to Germany and Siberia. Since then, the
Knights have continued to assist America’s men
and women in uniform and veterans through a
variety of programs designed to support their faith
and other needs.
Our first Friday fish dinner this coming Friday June
3 in Healy Hall will be our last public meal until
September. Over the Summer, we will deep clean
the kitchen and discuss whether to keep doing fish
dinners. Also, our last Scripture Rosary with the
Catholic
Daughters
in May
is
this
weekend, Sunday, May 29 at 3 p.m. in the parish

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Once the early Christians realized that
Christ’s coming in glory was delayed, there was a
need to provide for the governance and everyday
needs of the church. The various “orders” within the
church carried forward the apostles’ ministry, but
also allowed for a measure of creativity. The sacrament we call “holy orders” evolved somewhat slowly.
At first, it made sense for Christians to use the forms
they knew, adapting them to new situations. Synagogues, for example, were administered by a board
of “elders,” translated into Greek as presbyteros. We
know from the Acts of the Apostles that a system of
presbyters was a normal feature of church life from
earliest days. They stood in relationship to another
order, that of “overseers,” translated into Greek as
episkopos, giving us the English “bishops.” The
bishop was the shepherd, the faithful tender of the
flock, one who offered the Eucharist, forgave sins,
and maintained the bond of charity. Just as the deacons were the chief advisers for the charitable life of
the church, so were the presbyters meant to advise
the bishop on the spiritual life of the faithful. They
were trusted advisers at first, not pastors or priests
as we understand those terms today.
