Manassas, Virginia ALL SAINTS CATHOLIC CHURCH May 15, 2016 This year of 2016, our parish theme is I know well the plans I have in mind for you, says the LORD, … plans to give you a future full of hope. Jer 29:11 All Saints is a tithing parish, giving of our time, talent, and treasure so as to give glory to God. The readings for the feast of Pentecost speak of the Holy Spirit enlightening individuals, the community, and empowering people as Church to go out on mission to the world. You are that witness. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love! 90 Days of Grace: 40 days of Lent / 50 days of Easter On that day of Pentecost, Peter proclaimed the risen Lord Jesus and the good news that Jesus died and rose to save us from our sins; 3,000 were converted and baptized that day! May minds and hearts be open to the light of the Holy Spirit and converted by our witness to life. Father Lee Roos From the Ashes of Lent to the Fire of a New Pentecost Pentecost occurs again. Pentecost was originally a Jewish feast marking the harvest. It later became associated with the giving of the Mosaic Law at Mt. Sinai, where peals of thunder and lightning marked the presence of God at the mountaintop. After Jesus’ ascension into heaven, Pentecost was the feast when Jews wre gathered from throughout the known world of that time to celebrate the giving of the law and the entry into the covenant with God. The Blessed Virgin Mary, Peter and the apostles, and the others (120 in total) did what Jesus had told them at the Ascension: Stay in Jerusalem and pray for power from on high. On that day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit moved over the people in a powerful way. Those gathered in the Cenacle, the Upper Room, were filled with the power of the Holy Spirit and went out into the city to proclaim that Jesus was the Messiah. The Holy Spirit gave them gifts of faith to boldly proclaim Jesus as Lord and confidence which they had not had before. People heard them, as if they were hearing it in their own languages. This was all at 9 o’clock in the morning! At that Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended as tongues of fire upon the Church at prayer. A mighty wind presaged the change in history that was to come about as the Church was born to go out on mission. There was a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit wants to be outpoured over you and me so that a new springtime of evangelization (Blessed John Paul II) may occur in our own time. T he F ruits H oly S pirit of the ( or how we know that H oly S pirit W orking in our lives ) the is Simple in himself, the Spirit is manifold in his mighty works. The whole of his being is present to each individual; the whole of his being is present everywhere. Though shared in by many, he remains unchanged; his self-giving is not loss to himself. Like the sunshine, which permeates all the atmosphere, spreading over land and sea, and yet is enjoyed by each person as though it were for him alone, so the Spirit pours forth his grace in full measure, sufficient for all, and yet is present as though exclusively to everyone who can receive him. To all creatures that share in him, he gives a delight limited only by their own nature, not by his ability to give. From the treatise On the Holy Spirit by Saint Basil the Great, Bishop The Easter season ends with Pentecost and will now begin Ordinary Time (ordinal or “counted” time) with the 7th Week in Ordinary Time. w w w . a l l s a i n t s va . o r g Pentecost Sunday classes. This is to help families adapt to the new twoyear sacramental program. I mportant S acramental P reparation P rogram C hanges for 2016-2017 For this coming year, the Religious Education (RE) office has established a two-year sacramental preparation program. This means that children and teens who are receiving a sacrament will need to be enrolled in Religious Education class during their sacrament year and the preceding year. For example, a child who would receive First Communion in second grade in 2017-2018, would need to be enrolled in first grade for 2016-2017. This program will include the First Communion, Confirmation, and Christian Initiation sacrament preparation programs. 2016-2017: Program Transitional Year • This year, all children may be enrolled into their appropriate grade regardless of whether they completed a preceding year of religious education Oh, hear Him within you speaking this infinite love, moving like some divine and audible leaven, lifting the sky of the soul with expansions of light, shaping new heights and new depths, • Children who did not complete religious education classes for 1st grade or 7th grade will need to complete a transitional packet before they begin classes in September, 2016. The packet will ensure that children have the adequate preparation they need as they approach their sacrament year. These packets will be available in the RE Office and online at w w w . a l l s a i n t s r e l i g i o u s e d u c at i o n . o r g by May 31, 2016. • Please note: If a child is scheduled to receive a sacrament in 2017-2018 they need to be enrolled into an RE class in 2016-2017 for their preparation year. It was a pilgrimage feast because devout Jews came from their homes to the Temple in Jerusalem. It was an agricultural feast to give God thanks for the harvest at that time of the year. It took on another meaning, recalling what God had done for the Jews in history. The Passover marked the deliverance of the Jews from Egypt. About a month to a month and a half later, the Israelites arrived at Sinai. It was at Sinai that God formed them into a people and gave them the 10 Commandments. At Sinai, the Book of Exodus describes thunder and smoke as the people watched from below the mountain while Moses went up the mountain to meet God. At Pentecost, it was the first pilgrimage feast after Jesus had died and risen from the dead. The Apostles and other disciples, about 120 people, are gathered together in prayer. God intervenes in an unexpected way. We see a mighty wind and fire in the form of what appears as tongues of flame, and utterances in tongues. If we recall the story from the Book of Genesis where the story of the tower of Babel is told, the people thought that they could be like God and build a tower which would reach high enough to meet God. The people spoke one language but to confuse them in their pride, God brought about many different languages and so the people could not work together. At Pentecost, we find God doing something different. Pentecost reverses Babel, but not in the way that one might first expect. A universal language is not restored. Instead, God uses the diversity of languages and each person hears the message in their own language. God is at work! How it occurred, we don’t know. It was God’s intervention! So Pentecost has a connection with the formation of the Jewish people at Sinai with the covenant words of the 10 Commandments and Pentecost has a connection with the reversal of languages from Babel. This marks the opportunity that Peter has to proclaim the message of salvation, the beginning of a new people, the Church, and a new covenant. The Christian Pentecost is the time when the Holy Spirit fills and forms those called to be Church. Filled with the Spirit, we are now capable of giving witness to the saving mysteries of the suffering, death, resurrection, and exaltation of Jesus the Lord. 4 Manassas, Virginia ALL SAINTS CATHOLIC CHURCH May 15, 2016 I t ’ s G olf T ournament T ime : M ay 23 A ll S aints Y oung A dults Calling All Golfers … Join us for the All Saints Parish Golf Tournament on Mon., May 23 at Piedmont Club in Haymarket beginning at 10:00 am. Psalm 104 The Spirit makes one man a teacher of divine truth, inspires another to prophesy, gives another the power of casting out devils, enables another to interpret holy Scripture. The Spirit strengthens one man’s self-control, shows another how to help the poor, teaches another to fast and lead a life of asceticism, makes another oblivious to the needs of the body, trains another for martyrdom. His action is different in different people, but the Spirit himself is always the same. In each person, Scripture says, the Spirit reveals his presence in a particular way for the common good. The Spirit comes gently and makes himself known by his fragrance. From a catechetical instruction by St. Cyril of Jerusalem, Bishop Cub Scout News — Pack 1188. Hey moms and dads!
