Sixth Sunday of Easter
Your Pledge Makes
a Difference!
Jubilee Year of Mercy
n formal documents, presenta ons, and
homilies outlining the purpose of this
Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis
explains that compassion and
understanding for those in difficult
situa ons is not only our individual
responsibility, but something the whole
Church officially needs to manifest. Today’s
Acts of the Apostles reading presents a
moving example of the early church doing
precisely that. Prayerful openness to the
Holy Spirit assures the assembly that they
have not acted alone in discerning the
correct resolu on: “It is the decision of the
Holy Spirit and of us.” And they have
chosen the compassionate response: “not
to place on you any burden beyond these
necessi es” (Acts 15:28). Yet how daringly
crea ve—the Jewish majority sets aside
lifelong rituals that establish spiritual
iden ty and express covenant fidelity. How
radically trus ul—the church affirms
universally valid principles while respec ng
uniquely local and personal situa ons.
Exactly the grace Pope Francis prays this
Jubilee Year will renew in today’s Church!

What was happening in the Sixth Century?
When most people hear the name St. Augus ne, they think of the
illustrious fi h century Bishop of Hippo in North Africa; but he is
not the only major religious figure to bear the name. Another
Augus ne was to be fundamental in the Chris aniza on of Britain.
The date and place of his birth and his family background are not
known, but by the late sixth century, Augus ne was the Prior of
St. Andrew’s Benedic ne Abbey in Rome. Since the Abbot of this
abbey was also the reigning Pope, Gregory I, Augus ne as Prior
carried out the daily administra ve du es of the abbey. He was an
educated man especially knowledgeable in the Scriptures. Pope
Gregory knew Augus ne well, and trusted him implicitly.
The rela onship of trust between the two men may be the reason
that Gregory appointed Augus ne to lead a new mission, known
as the Gregorian Mission, into England for the purpose of
conver ng King Aethelberht of Kent, and the Anglo-Saxon people.
Chris anity was not new to the people of Britain. Missionaries had
arrived in Britain in the fourth century while it was s ll part of the
Roman Empire and were successful in spreading the faith. Rome
withdrew its troops from Britain in 410 leaving the territory
vulnerable to the invasion of Saxon Tribes. By the fall of Rome in
the late 5th century, the Saxons had conquered most of eastern
and southern Britain, destroying what remained of Roman culture,
including civil and religious structure. Small enclaves of Chris ans
remained, but it does not appear that they a empted to convert
their conquerors, and the church in that region had li le support.
The Saxons did not reach the west coast of Britain where
Chris anity con nued to flourish, although somewhat
disconnected from Rome, and primarily ruled by the Irish
monasteries. King Aethelberht of Kent, who was a pagan, had
married a Chris an princess named Bertha, daughter of the King
of Paris and great granddaughter was Clovis I, the first Chris an
Frankish king. The marriage was, of course, a poli cal alliance, and
Bertha was intended to influence her husband toward Chris anity
and toward peaceful coopera on with the Franks.
She must have done well with this, as when Augus ne and his
companions entered Kent, they did not meet with resistance from
Aethelberht, who accepted bap sm and supported the cause of
the missionary endeavor. Queen Bertha had the ruins of an old
Roman era church in Canterbury renovated and made into her
private chapel which she dedicated to St. Mar n de Tours. It is the
oldest remaining church in the English speaking world. Queen
Bertha, received a le er from Pope Gregory in 601 AD
commending her for her faith, and a er her death later that year
at age thirty-six, she was popularly acclaimed as a saint. Today,
May 1, is St. Bertha’s feast day.
Augus ne arrived in Canterbury, Kent, in 597, and was welcomed
by Queen Bertha. The royal couple donated nearby land on which
the Monastery of Saints Peter and Paul was constructed. Later the
name was changed to the Monastery of St. Augus ne. Many of
King Aethelberht’s subjects followed the example of their King
and also converted to Chris anity. Thousands were bap zed in a
special liturgy on Christmas day 597, some reports claiming that
the number exceeded 10,000.
By 598 Augustine was formally installed as Bishop of Canterbury. In
601 a cohort of missionaries arrived from Rome, bringing with them
sacred vessels, vestments, and a palladium for Augustine along with
the decree from Pope Gregory that Augustine was the Metropolitan
Archbishop. He was instructed to select and consecrate twelve
additional Bishops to serve in the Saxon areas of Britain.
Augus ne of Canterbury died May 26, 604 AD, and was buried in
the monastery he had built, though it was destroyed during the
Protestant reforma on and his relics lost. Shortly a er his death
he was acclaimed as a saint, with his feast day established as May
26. He is known as the Apostle to the English.
And so, the history of the Church con nues.

manifestarse. Hoy el texto de los Hechos
de los Apóstoles presenta un ejemplo
conmovedor de la Iglesia de los primeros
siglos haciendo precisamente eso. El
comienzo de una oración al Espíritu Santo
asegura a la asamblea que ellos no
actuaron solos discerniendo la decisión
correcta: “Porque pareció bien al Espíritu
Santo y a nosotros”. Y ellos ya eligieron
una respuesta compasiva: “no imponerles
mayor carga que estas cosas
esenciales” (Hechos 15:28). Sin embargo,
que crea vamente, la mayoría judía puso a
un lado los rituales establecidos de toda la
vida que establecían iden dad y
expresaban fidelidad a la alianza. Que
confianza tan fundamental, la comunidad
afirma principios validos universalmente y
al mismo empo respeta situaciones
personales y par culares. ¡Exactamente la
gracia por la que el Papa Francisco ora que
este Año Jubilar renueve a la Iglesia de
hoy!
