NORBERT CATHOLIC CHURCH | WWW.STNORBERTCHURCH.ORG 2 Stewardship Reflecting on God’s Word Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Unlike mortals, angels do not die. Nor do they need to eat or drink. Without corrup ble bodies, they live eternally with God. But the psalm for today describes the manna that the Israelites ate in the desert as “the bread of angels” (78:25). As the first reading tells us, it seemed to them that it came down from heaven every night. Through the manna, God gave them life when death seemed imminent. Through the manna, their faith in God’s eternal care for them was revived. In the case of the Israelites, they received life by ea ng the bread from heaven. And the life they were given allowed them to believe. In the case of the disciples of Jesus it’s the other way around. We must believe in Jesus as “the true bread from heaven” (John 6:32) in order to receive the eternal life that he provides. —Virginia S llwell Copyright © 2014, World Library Publica ons. Apostolic Christian Faith was threatened both by divergent theologies within the Christian Communities and also by competitive religious systems. Gnosticism preceded Christianity, and had infiltrated into some Jewish communities, as well as thriving as a replacement to the ancient Greek and Roman myths. Gnostics were dualists, who believed in a Good God who made all spiritual things, and an evil god, called the demiurge who was responsible for the creation of all material things. Therefore, they taught, that all material things were evil and only spiritual things were holy. They discouraged marriage because they believed that conception and birth caused a free and good spirit to become trapped in an evil human body, and to procreate was sinful. For the Gnostics, salvation was achieved through secret knowledge that was given by the Good God to only a select few. Some of the texts in the Old Testament that praise the goodness of God’s creation may have been written in rejection of Gnostic influences on the Jewish community after the exile (“God looked upon everything that he had made, and found it very good. Gen 1:31). When applied to Christian doctrine, Gnosticism disavowed most of the principle tenets of faith. For instance, the belief was in two (or sometimes several gods) good and evil, rather than the allholy Trinity; the Incarnation cannot stand if one believes that human bodies are evil; and redemption offered to all through the sacrifice of Christ is discarded, as only a few are saved, and those by the infusion of a special and secret knowledge. (Gnostic is the Greek word for knowledge.) This gave rise to various heresies within Christianity in the early years, such as that of Marcion, discussed earlier, who claimed that the God of the Old Testament was an evil deity and different from the Good God of whom Jesus taught. Docetism was another Christian heresy with Gnostic roots. Docetics believed that since the human body was evil, Jesus didn’t really have one, it was only an illusion. According to them, Jesus was a purely spiritual being, who could project what appeared to be a bodily form, but really did not exist (Docetic means illusion). This denies the Incarnation, God himself taking on humanity. The Docetics denied that Christ really was crucified and died, because if he had no body, he could not really die. And, if he did not die, he could not rise from the dead. It is easy to understand why the Church was so opposed to these teachings. The Gnostic community produced writings now referred to as the Gnostic Gospels. They were written in the second and third centuries, and tell fanciful stories about Jesus which are inconsistent with the accounts in the four canonical Gospels. For many centuries these texts were lost and known only through the writings of the early Church Fathers who wrote treatises opposing them. But, in 1947, some Egyptian laborers digging in Nag Hamadi, Egypt, unearthed a library of fifty-five of these Gnostic texts. These men did not understand what they had uncovered, and sold the texts to black market dealers in antiquities for a few coins. Once the various pages began to find their way into the hands of collectors, scholars became aware of them, and through a process of intrigue, suspense and mystery that could rival any novel, managed to get most (but probably not all) of the Gnostic Gospels safely into academic institutions where they could be deciphered and studied by historians and scripture scholars. Gnosticism has been difficult to defeat. It reappears in the middle ages as Albigensianism, also known as Catharism. Gnosticism influences some of the beliefs that Islam holds about Jesus, primarily that he did not die on the cross or was resurrected from death, but was taken up into heaven by God, and it also continues in various forms in some of the practices known today as “New Age Religions.” And, so the story of the Church continues . . . —Virginia S llwell Derechos de autor © 2014, World Library Publica ons.
