Dear Friends,
April 24, 2016
This last Friday I was privileged to witness the marriage
between Briana Smith and Trey Glenn. I would like to take this
opportunity to wish them many years of happiness and joy as
they begin their life together as husband and wife.
We know that the home is the first church where we
learn about God and our Catholic faith. In our homes we learn
the values and good morals that will help us to live productive
lives and hopefully guide us to lead holy lives. Most importantly,
the gift of God’s love is the greatest lesson a child can learn
from his/her parent!
This lesson was reinforced in me later in life, but what
can I say, I’m a late bloomer! I remember one year when I came
home for my summer vacation from the seminary. I was sitting
with my parents in their home in South Florida. It was around
5:00 pm, or, ‘the time for a drink before dinner!’
Then, something small but crucial happened, it was
this selfless act that was the secret for my parents marital
happiness as well as for so many other men and women who
enter married life. When it was time for his drink my father
didn’t get up and fix his own drink and return to his recliner. My
father asked my mother, “Ann, can I fix you a drink?” And the
next day it was my mother who would ask my father, “Bud, can
I fix you a drink?” Although it sounds insignificant, this was the
key to my parent’s happiness, ‘selflessness’, not that their
marriage was perfect, but they were happy.
I remember an example of this selflessness in the
movie, A Bronx Tale. The story took place in the 1960’s in an
Italian neighborhood in the Bronx. A young Italian man was
going out on a date with a young African American woman from
the ‘other part of town.’ To impress the young lady, the young
man borrowed a car from his friend who happened to be the
local Mafia Boss. When the young man returned the car to the
Mafia Boss, he described every detail of the night, “After I
unlocked the car for her she sat down and leaned over and
unlocked the car door for me (before automatic door
openers)!” “She did what, that means she loves you, she
sacrificed for you!” In other words, by that small selfless act she
showed she cared about him, she sacrificed for him!
So what is the true nature of love? It is a total selfgiving and free offering of one’s life for the good of another. We
see this in a mother who loves her child and will do anything in
her power to nurture, protect, and save the life of her child. We
see this type of love in a soldier who is devoted to his/her
country’s welfare, and will endure any hardship and suffering
and willingly sacrifice his/her own life to defend our homeland.
We see this type of love in a wife who has been married for 52
years. Her husband now is unable to walk or talk, yet she with
just as much love as the day they were married, cares for him
and loves him, that’s true love.
This is the type of total self-giving love we see in God
the Father who willingly offered his only begotten Son, Jesus
Christ, who totally emptied himself and died on the cross for
our sins. There is nothing that can separate us from this love!
“By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have
love for one another.”
God bless you,
Fr. John
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love
one another; even as I have loved you, that you also
love one another.”
Queridos amigos,
Abril 24, 2016
Me gustaría aprovechar
A Bronx Tale.
Padre John

“I was in prison and you came to visit me.” Mathew 25:38
A group of men from various Christian Faith Communities, as well as men from our parish, are having a Kairos
retreat.
[Born out of the Catholic Curculio retreats meant to strengthen the Christian Faith of those who attend] and
bring the faith to those without or struggling with their faith.]
-42 inmates plus a team of 44 men from several churches will be at Broad River Prison from Thursday, April
28th till Sunday, May 1st to take part in this retreat to bring Jesus to all.
As a part of this we give a small bag of 2 or 3 cookies to each of the 1200 inmates with a Christian message
each of the three evenings we are there –we need thousands of cookies
If you can please help bake some cookies –enclose them in larger clear gallon or quart size plastic bags and they will be
included in this offering [they will be put in smaller bags at the prison for delivery. Cookies can be baked ahead of time and
frozen. This can be a fun project for a small group to get together and do something good for your church. We will take store
bought cookies – Please get the cookies to the small kitchen area in front of the church office(Atrium) by Wednesday
evening April 27th -- THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUING SUPPORT -LETS SHOW WITH THIS SMALL OFFERING
THAT SOMEONE CARES As Jesus Cares! We are experiencing many new men to BRCI as The State System moves people
around and a younger group that have not experienced the cookie gifts in the past! PLEASE HELP-------------- QUESTIONS DAVID
