Bulletin - Cathedral of Christ the King

April 10, 2016
3rd Sunday of Easter
Public Statement in Response to the Passage of HB 757 and the
Promised Veto by Georgia Governor Nathan Deal
Archbishop Gregory and Bishop Hartmayer of the Diocese of Savannah have
issued a response to the passage of HB 757 and the promised veto by Georgia
Governor Nathan Deal. You may have heard about this religious liberty
legislation/action in the news.
The statement is available on our www.archatl.com website in English and
Spanish and is available for media. Here is the official statement:
Throughout the legislative debate related to religious liberty, the Catholic bishops
of Georgia have adhered to the principles we asserted in March 2015 (Statement
Regarding Religious Freedom Act). While we and the other Catholic bishops in
the United States support the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), we do
not support any implementation of RFRA in a way that will discriminate against
any individual. Indeed, the dignity of each individual is the basis for religious
liberty. [Dignitatis Humanae, n. 1,2]

We fervently support religious liberty guaranteed by the United States and
Georgia constitutions and we respect those who seek to enhance those freedoms
through legislation. Governor Nathan Deal has announced his intention to veto
HB 757 and the debate will, thus, continue.
Under these circumstances, the general wellbeing of the State requires that all
respectfully acknowledge the worthy motivations on each side and progress into a
future of dialogue which, more than continually revising legislative language, will
focus on greater compassion and mercy so that every individual can develop his
or her full potential.

On this Third Sunday of Easter Jesus instructs Peter to “Feed my lambs,” and “Tend my

responsibility to more than ourselves; we also are called to care for and most especially
love those around us.

Congratulations to our parishioners, John Paul Beck, Michael Marcinko,
Teddy Porter, Dan Mohr, and Powell
Whitaker, who earned the Catholic
Committee on Scouting's Pope Pius XII
Religious Emblem. The Pope Pius XII
Religious Emblem is awarded to
Catholic Scouts of high school age who
have completed a program attuned to the ideals of Scouting that helps them
examine how being a Christian affects daily life, and challenges the candidate to
evaluate personal talents and abilities in light of a possible choice of lifestyle,
vocation, or ministry, in order to become more active in the Catholic faith
community.
We'd also like to especially recognize Michael Marcinko, Teddy Porter, and Dan
Mohr for earning the Pillars of Faith-Duty to God Award. This award is given to
Scouts who have earned all four Religious Emblems: Light of Christ, Parvuli Dei,
Ad Altare Dei, and Pope Pius XII. Very few Boy Scouts earn a Religious Emblem
while in Scouting. To earn all four is rarer than becoming an Eagle Scout. This
year, only eight Scouts earned the Pillars of Faith-Duty to God award, and three of
them were from our Cathedral Parish. All five of these boys exemplify the best of
our Faith and Scouting. Congratulations, gentlemen, we are very proud of you!
Ministry Spotlight: CTK Connections
[email protected]
The mission of CTK Connections is to help parishioners become involved in life at
the Cathedral – both those who recently joined us and those who want to reengage with our community. We know that finding your way in a large parish can
be a bit overwhelming, especially one that is home to over 6,000 families and still
growing! We reach out individually to the newest members of our parish family
and invite them to “Come and See. Stay and Connect.”
We want each CTK registrant
to feel welcomed by someone
who acknowledges that their
family has joined ours. We
connect to them on a monthly
basis for six months to help
them navigate through the
many different opportunities to
become involved with their
new parish. We especially love
meeting up before or after Mass
to offer a personal connection.
If you are new to Christ the
King or if you are ready to get
more involved, please contact us and we will gladly get you connected.
Are you interested in being a Connector? No experience is necessary other than a
willingness to meet new parishioners, welcome them to our parish family, and
share your experience in ministry and parish life. Pictured here, Amanda Carroll
and Cheryl Mure’ spin the “Wheel of Welcome” to engage with new parishioners
at the Festival of Ministries.
3RD SUNDAY OF EASTER
APRIL 10, 2016
Totally Catholic
Fr. Jose Kochuparampil
IMPORTANT POINT TO KEEP IN MIND
Each and every human life is a precious gift from God. And this divine gift, according
to our Catholic faith, is the outcome of the unconditional self-giving of both spouses,
male and female, united in the Holy Sacrament of Matrimony.
For many couples, infertility is a matter of great concern and hence a reason for
sadness. It is at this vulnerable moment the seductive $4 billion-a-year assisted
reproductive industry makes its inroads into the lives of those afflicted customers.
The New York Times’ article “Selling the Fantasy of Fertility,” (Sept.11, 2013) says
that there is a 77 percent global failure rate in the assisted reproductive procedures
performed worldwide. The article further illustrates: “Behind those failed cycles are
millions of women and men who have engaged in a debilitating, Sisyphus-like battle
with themselves and their infertility, involving daily injections, drugs, hormones,
countless blood tests and other procedures.” Notwithstanding the hurdles the
industry ever thrives selling eternal hope to those vulnerable.
This being the case in today’s society, as Catholics how do we look at all these
modern technological advancements? On September 08, 2008 The Congregation for
the Doctrine of Faith published guidelines “Instruction Dignitas Personae on Certain
Bioethical Questions.” The document quoting the previous one, Donum Vitae (1988)
states: “The origin of human life has its authentic context in marriage and in the
family, where it is generated through an act which expresses the reciprocal love
between a man and a woman.”
While the Catholic Church is not averse to the advancement of science and
technology in this area the guideline tells us those advancements must respect three
fundamental goods. 1. The right to life and to physical integrity of every human
being from conception to natural death. 2. The unity of marriage, which means
reciprocal respect for the right within marriage to become a father or mother only
together with the other spouse. 3. The specifically human values of sexuality which
require that the procreation of a human person be brought about as the fruit of the
conjugal act specific to the love between spouses.
It is clear that the conjugal act cannot and should not be substituted for any medical
intervention for the purpose of procreation/conception. The guideline is clear in
making the assertion that techniques aimed at removing obstacles to natural
fertilization, as for example, hormonal treatments for infertility, surgery for
endometriosis and unblocking of fallopian tubes or their surgical repair are morally
and ethically licit.
Artificial fertilization (which has its manifold forms), surrogacy, freezing of embryos
for future use and a host of other reproductive techniques are unacceptable to our
Catholic faith. In a nutshell, it is the Catholic Church’s teaching that ‘conjugal act’ is
the medium of bringing a new human life into the world that in turn, is the precious
gift from God.
Hence, we Catholics, look at marriage in the following way: “Marriage: A covenant or
partnership of life between a man and woman, which is ordered to the well-being of
the spouses and to the procreation and upbringing of children. When validly
contracted between two baptized people, marriage is a Sacrament.”(Catechism of the
Catholic Church, p. 887).

WELCOME FROM THE PASTOR AND CATHEDRAL
COMMUNITY
Dear Friends in Christ,
Welcome! On behalf of Archbishop Wilton Gregory, the Clergy,
the staff, and the whole Cathedral community, I welcome you to
the Cathedral of Christ the King. I pray that as you step into the
Cathedral, you not only experience the beauty of the
surroundings but also the vibrant spirit of the community
gathered.
We are an active parish of close to 6,000 families and over one
hundred ministries. Our mission statement to “Know, Love and
Serve as Jesus Did” is fulfilled by the sharing our gifts of time,
talent and treasure. If you are new, it is my hope that you will
join us and become part of this wonderful community. If you are
just visiting, it is a blessing to have you here and thank you for
worshiping with us. We hope you will come again.
If you would like to learn more about our community, you can
visit our website at www.cathedralofchristtheking.org. If you
would like to register at the parish, you can visit our reception
desk for a registration form.
I pray that your visit to the Cathedral was enjoyable and that you
truly experienced the goodness of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Prayers and Blessings,
Msgr. Frank McNamee, Rector
