But Francis had already declared that Jesus “has shown the face of God’s mercy” back in 2013 on his first Palm Sunday as pope. Francis described Luke’s account of Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem: “Crowds, celebrating, praise, blessing, peace: joy fills the air. Jesus has awakened great hopes, especially in the hearts of the simple, the humble, the poor, the forgotten, those who do not matter in the eyes of the world. He understands human sufferings . . . has bent down to heal body and soul.” Entering Jerusalem, Jesus looks at all of us with love, Francis continued, at our sicknesses and sins. “A beautiful scene, full of light—the light of the love of Jesus” (Pope Francis, Palm Sunday homily, March 24, 2013). May this Jubilee Year’s Holy Week and Triduum make us Jesus’ own light-bearers and love-givers to all who long to see the Face of Mercy. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. These days remember and celebrate the heart of our Christian faith ~ Jesus’ last supper with his friends, his crucifixion, and his resurrection to new life. Each sacred day reminds us of how we passed over from death to new life at our Baptism. The liturgies of Holy week have more for children to see and hear than any other liturgies of the year. In religion class children learn with other children. At liturgies the whole Church gathers. Watching others worship tells children how adults value and express their faith. Children learn concretely. Concrete symbols fill the Holy Week liturgies and make them memorable for children. In the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday they witness the ritual of the washing of the feet ~ just as Jesus washed his friends’ feet ~ a concrete act of service. On Good Friday we remember that Jesus died on the cross for us. We hear the long story of Jesus’ passion and venerate the cross by touching or kissing it. On Holy Saturday the liturgy begins with the new fire kindled in the dark of night. Everyone waits in the church in darkness and receives a candle lit from the new Easter Candle. The church fills with light. We hear scripture stories that remind us of all God has done for us from the creation of the world until now. We baptize the catechumens in Jesus’ new life. The priest sprinkles the whole parish community with newly blessed Easter water. The newly baptized put on white robes to be confirmed and receive first Holy Communion. The teachers have prepared your child to celebrate Holy Week. When you take part in these liturgies with them, you share with them your Easter faith and experience together with the mystery of God’s life-giving love for us. TUNE IN TO RCIA. Becoming more aware of the steps the catechumens are taking to prepare for the Easter Vigil will help you prepare. Introduce yourself to the catechumens in your parish if you have the opportunity. Your show of support and encouragement will help them feel more welcome. —James A. Wallace, ਃ. Derechos de autor © 2012, World Library Publications. Todos los derechos reservados.
