Abstinence is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent. On days of abstinence, meat may not be eaten at all. Fast – Catholics over 18 and up to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to the obligation of fasting. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the days of fasting. On these days, only one full meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. These Lenten regulations state the minimum requirements. Other recommended practices during this season include participating in daily Mass and fasting on other days. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE: FEBRUARY 10 – MARCH 20 You are invited to join other Christians for 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion. From February 10-March 20, you are invited to stand and peacefully pray during a 40-day vigil in the public right-of-way outside Planned Parenthood at 1055 Commonwealth Ave. in Boston from 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. Candlelight vigils take place on Fridays at 7:00 p.m. (English), and Saturdays at 6:00 p.m. (Spanish). The Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet is said on Tuesdays, Feb. 16, 23, & March 1, 8, 15. For more information contact Rita Russo 781-762-4391. 2 14 de Febrero de 2016 PLEASE PRAY FOR. . . This invitation goes out to those baptized in the Catholic Church as well as to anyone who was baptized in another Christian denomination but who wants to learn whether they are being called to become Catholic. CATHOLIC APPEAL 2016 If you have not seen the inspiring, brief video about the 2016 Catholic appeal, it is on the parish website at stmarywaltham.org or at bostoncatholicappeal.org. Thank you for your support. WORLD DAY OF THE SICK– PROXY FORMS Last Thursday, February 11 was the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. It is also celebrated as the World Day of the Sick. It may seem strange to ‘celebrate’ a day for the sick but as I learned when I visited Lourdes, the sick are ‘VIPs’ and we can never do enough to combat sickness and care for those who are ill. The Catholic Health Initiatives for Uganda (CHIU) hosted a special day of prayer for the sick and had an information session to help the sick. One of the info sheets was a Health Care proxy form that takes in to account your physical, moral, and spiritual needs in the event that you cannot make health care decisions for yourself. There are copies of these forms at the doors of the Church. You may take them for your personal use. You are recommended to make copies of them and give them to your doctor and necessary persons if you fill them out. PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY The next meeting of St. Mary’s Prayer Shawl Ministry is Saturday, February 20 at 2:30 at St. Mary Apartments. The members knit or crochet shawls that are given to persons who are ill or experiencing crisis. For more information contact Mary Alice McMahon at 781-899-9726. SERRA CLUB OF BOSTON Serra Club is a group of Catholic laypersons dedicated to encouraging, promoting, and affirming vocations to the priesthood and religious life. The next meeting is Saturday, Feb. 20 at St. Mary’s (2nd floor of Rel. Ed. building) at 8:30 a.m. ON THE BULLETIN COVER Crux Gemmata: The Jeweled Cross One of the most ancient representations of the cross of Christ is a form known as “crux gemmata”: the jeweled cross. The shape recalls the Lord’s passion, suffering and death on the cross. The jewels signify the glorious victory after death which Christ won for us. Children of the St. Agnes and St. Michael catechetical classes have been making a jeweled cross for their family home. This beautiful example was made by Monica Zecena who was received into the Church last year. First Sunday of Lent February 14, 2016 SAINT MARY PARISH My brothers and sisters in Christ, This Sunday eight catechumens from our parish are going to the Cathedral of the Holy Cross for the annual Rite of Election. They will be ‘elected’ and ‘have elected themselves’ to becoming Catholics. They will be joined by Christians who were baptized in other denominations but desire to become Catholics and receive the sacrament of confirmation. This ceremony is in the Church of the Archbishop which helps us remember that we are not just connected to our own parish but are in communion with Catholics all over the world though our Archbishop O’Malley and Pope Francis, the successor of St. Peter. The Faith is Apostolic. Please pray for Anthony, Damien, Jesus, Josue, Kevin C., Kevin O., Luis, and Tracey as they enter this next stage of initiation into the Mysteries of God. – Father Michael ST. FRANCIS CHILDREN’S CLOTHING DRIVE The children in the After School Program – in wanting to perform the corporal works of mercy – are holding a children’s clothing drive at the end of the month. They have been learning how St. Francis of Assisi always gave his own clothes away and asked others to donate their own clothes to beggars. The clothing drive will run from February 22 until March 13. There will be drop off points in the back of the Church and at the front door of the Rel. Ed. Building. They are collecting shoes, coats, outerwear, and clothes for children ages 2-12. They will only accept socks and underwear that is new. The Clothing will be distributed to parents and children through the Saint Vincent de Paul Society and hopefully a church in Guatemala. ANNUAL BABY SHOWER Join the Archdiocesan Parish Family Baby Shower at St. Mary Parish on February 13 and 14. Please bring an unwrapped baby gift to Mass that weekend. Baby items that are needed include: layette nightgowns, baby sleep bags, baby bottles, newborn disposable diapers, diaper bags, size small sleep and play clothing (sizes 0-3 months or 3-6 months), sweaters, crib sheets for Pack & Play, socks, pacifiers, toiletries, diaper rash ointment, shampoo, body wash (no baby powder), baby bath towels & facecloths, baby health & grooming items, maternity clothes. PRAYERS FOR PEACEFUL ELECTIONS IN UGANDA Today the Ugandan Catholic Community in the Archdiocese of Boston (UCCB) has organized prayers for peaceful general elections in Uganda. We call upon all Ugandans and friends of Uganda living in Massachusetts and neighboring states to join us today at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mary Parish. We are praying for our country ahead of the General Elections that will take place on Feb 18. We have all read or heard the uncertainties going on in our society back home. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS PRESENTATION Last Saturday night, the Knights of Columbus hosted a book presentation by Andy Lavallee. It was a great evening. Over 50 people came out to hear Andy introduce his book FROM THE HUB TO THE HEART which chronicles his conversion and life experience. Thanks to Andy and the Knights for sponsoring this event. Their next event will be a Movie Night on March 12 at 7:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to watch the movie “THE WAR ROOM”. Babysitting will be provided. 3 Primer Domingo de Cuaresma 14 de Febrero de 2016 SAINT CHARLES PARISH My brothers and sisters in Christ, I hope you have a good start to Lent. May the disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving over these forty days renew and strengthen you friendship with Christ. Sometimes we begin Lent strong but then weaken. That is ok. The key is not getting down or giving up. Penitential practices stretch and test us. The important thing is to start again or make some more effort when we want to give up. It is also important to remember to call upon Jesus for help at these times rather than just working on ourselves. Lent is not self– help. It is asking Christ for help because he is the only one who loved perfectly and until the end. No one prayed, fasted or loved better than Jesus of Nazareth. . Please also consider going to the sacrament of Confession early in Lent. Our sins and fears and past weigh us down. The grace of the sacrament heals and strengthens. Your soul will be stronger and your friends and family will thank you. Have a blessed Lent. – Father Michael SATURDAY CONFESSIONS IN LENT There are confessions from 9:30 a.m.–3:45 p.m. during the Saturdays of Lent at St. Mary’s. Bishops and priests sometimes lament that people do not go to Confession. Sometimes this leads parishes to schedule fewer times for confession. Yet this does not solve the problem. The solution is to make Confession more available. So come, even if it has been a long time… even if you are not sure what to do when you enter the confessional. The priest will help you. Spend some time examining your conscience and let any wounds from the past be healed. HEALING MASS MARCH 3 There will be a Healing Mass on Thursday March 3 at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel. Healing Masses take place on the first Thursday of each month. All are welcome to join us for prayer for physical, spiritual or emotional healing. MASS INTENTIONS Masses intentions scheduled this week are listed below. Please find the full Mass Schedule on page 6. Saturday, February 13 4:00 p.m. - Parish & Parishioners Sunday, February 14 10:00 a.m. - Ronald Lefaille 7:00 p.m. - Parish & Parishioners Saturday, February 20 4:00 p.m. - Parish & Parishioners Sunday, February 21 10:00 a.m. - Parish & Parishioners 7:00 p.m. - Parish & Parishioners GIFT BEARERS Those requesting a Mass Intention are welcome to serve as gift bearers for that liturgy. Freedman THE NAME OF GOD IS MERCY – POPE FRANCIS Pope Francis has put together a book on Mercy. It is very helpful. For the rest of the year of Mercy, we will be inserting some of his thoughts. The book is written in a question and answer format. Q: Holy Father, you m ention that today m any people go to fortune-tellers. But has that not always been the case? A: Yes, of cour se, ther e have always been soothsayer s, diviner s, and for tune-tellers. But not as many people looked to them for spiritual health and healing as they do today. Mostly, people are looking for someone to listen to them. Someone willing to grant them time, to listen to their dramas and difficulties. This is what I call the “apostolate of the ear,” and it is important. Very important. I feel compelled to say to confessors: talk, listen with patience, and above all tell people that God loves them. And if the confessor cannot absolve a person, he needs to explain why, he needs to give them a blessing, even without the holy sacrament. The love of God exists even for those who are not disposed to receive it: that man, that woman, that boy, or that girl – they are all loved by God, they are sought out by God, they are in need of blessing. Be tender with these people. Do not push them away. People are suffering. It is a huge responsibility to be a confessor. Confessors have before them the lost sheep that God loves so much; if we don’t show them the love and mercy of God, we push them away and perhaps they will never come back. So embrace them and be compassionate, even if you can’t absolve them. Give them a blessing anyway. I have a niece who was married to a man in a civil wedding before he received the annulment of his previous marriage. They wanted to get married, they loved each other, they wanted children, and they had three. The judge had even awarded him custody of the children from his first marriage. This man was so religious that every Sunday, when he went to Mass, he went to the confessional and said to the priest, “I know you can’t absolve me but I have sinned by doing this and that, please give me a blessing.” This is a religiously mature man. – P.
