I
Pastor’s Notes
This is the fourth weekend that I “socialize” the work of
an ad hoc committee of the Pastoral Council. The
Leadership Team was tasked with formulating a parish
vision and mission statement for our Catholic Church of
Glen Burnie. While we are not legally ONE parish yet we
are in fact operating as one parish. It is important,
especially because our church is large and spread over
many worship sites and communities, to have a common
sense of direction and purpose. Then Archbishop Edwin
O’Brien asked many priests from the Archdiocese to
consider taking a class entitled “Good Leaders, Good
Shepherds” (GLGS) as a way to help us in the governance
aspect of pastoring. In the 2-year program, we priests
were given many tools to use and one of them was how
to develop a vision and mission statement. Our Pastoral
Council Leadership Team is using these tools now. I saw
myself as one who guided the discussion and asked for
clarification. Our Leadership Team itself was to do the
work of discernment. We began with foundation work
which will eventually lead us to be able to construct a
vision and mission statement for CCGB.
The four 4 core values our Leadership Team selected
for CCGB to give us a common direction are: (1) Liturgy,
which GLGS describes as “the rites, ceremonies, prayers,
and sacraments of the church,” (2) Community, which
GLGS describes as “caring about and addressing the
needs of others,” (3) Mobilized Laity, which GLGS
describes as “Catholics who are actively serving the
ministries of the Church,” and (4) Creativity, which GLGS
describes as “coming up with new ideas and ways of
doing ministry.” All of these seem boiler-plate, -meaning
our Leadership team did not feel the need to create their
own - and found these 4 core values best expressed the
core areas they feel will help our communities form a
mutual identity. Each has to be defined in order to be
useful. If this work is to be useful, we need to know what
it takes to embrace each aspect of our vision and
mission. If they are to be useful, we must know what
they mean and when we actually attain them.
In the first week of socializing our core beliefs, I
provided you with a general sense of our work. In the
second announcement of socializing our work, I spoke of
the core values of Liturgy, and the third week,
Community.
The third core value our Leadership Team focused on
is Mobilized Laity. Our Leadership Team defined
Mobilized Laity as “Dedicated Christians who
enthusiastically serve ministries of their family, the
communal church, and the global community.
The threefold Behaviors of Mobilized Laity to
Operationalize the Value are:
 Generous Spirit (giving with a happy heart)
 Encourage
(motivate/stimulate
others
to
participate)
 Enable (show/lead/help the dis-engaged how to
engage)
Additional thoughts on Mobilized Laity:
 Actively serving the ministries of the church.
 Love of serving the church.
 Dedicated (intentional).
 Multi-generational.
 Encourage – to serve ministries, to learn and grow
in faith.
 Enable – help people to engage; give opportunity
to participate.
More next week!
This Monday Father Vin begins his full-time ministry in
our community. Father Angel began his summer vacation
on Wednesday, August 26 and will return on Tuesday,
September 15.

[email protected] and my cell number is 410-299-6731.

week!

EVENTS AND GENERAL
INFORMATION
Haiti Outreach Committee
The parishioners of our sister parish may not have much by
our standards of living, but what they do have is a sincere
appreciation, respect, and need for human intimacy. Men,
woman, and children are all open to a holding one another’s
hand, a hand shake, a hug, a kiss on the cheek, or all of the
above. For all that we do
have I can only imagine
our lives would be that
much better if we all,
me included, could take
more time to unplug
and have face to face
conversations with more
of our brothers and sisters in Christ. By Dan Miller
Please keep Père Rony, our Haitian pastor, in your prayers.
Père Rony is in a great deal of pain from his sciatica and is
having difficulty performing his many duties. Additionally, he
has other serious medical issues at this time. Thank you. Gail
Grady

1st Communion News
All families with children who are eligible to begin
sacramental preparation for 1st Reconciliation should
have received a registration form in the mail. There
will be a mandatory sacramental parent meeting for
all parents who have children eligible to receive the
sacrament of Reconciliation this Fall. The parent
meeting will be held on September 23 and September
30 in the Parish Center at 6:30 p.m. At least one
parent of the child is required to attend one of the two
meetings. Children are not permitted to attend.
It is important to remember that sacramental
preparation for Reconciliation is required prior to a
child receiving 1st Eucharist in the Spring. These
sessions will not be repeated; therefore, failure to
attend could result in your child receiving the
sacraments the following school year. If you have not
received registration for Reconciliation, please contact
Dan Miller at [email protected].

Aunque
legalmente no somos UNA parroquia todavía estamos
Me vi a mi

8
para nosotros. No viene a imponernos ni viejas ni
nuevas tradiciones.
No viene a enseñarnos a guardar las apariencias. No
fin.
