Stewardship
Reflecting on God’s Word
Twenty‐Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time The text of this weekend’s Isaiah reading speaks of a servant whose suffering and afflictions are borne for the many. Father Daniel Berrigan once said that the call of the disciple of Jesus is to absorb evil. Not very glorious, indeed, for servants absorb the leftovers of the household’s extravagance. Those at the bottom of life’s pyramid absorb the muck; swamps and lowlands absorb the runoff of life’s fields. Just so parents absorb our tears. And those who forgive absorb the blow. As the warrior absorbs the enemy’s hate, so the conscientious objector absorbs the need for revenge. So also the embrace absorbs our fears, justice absorbs mistrust, love absorbs the distance of hearts, and the sharing of bread absorbs the memory of pain. In such ways God makes the world new. The fear, and perhaps the sadness as well, is that in absorbing the evil of life we do become at least to some extent that which we absorb. Then those who gaze upon us do so as if we ourselves were afflicted and diseased. Then those who minister to dying AIDS patients are themselves eyed with suspicion and fear. Then the conscientious objector is expelled by the patriot, and the selfless warrior is cast off into indifference by the righteous purist. Then the Alzheimer caregiver is forgotten; the one who forgives the abuse is revenged; and the one who combats poverty with generosity grows poorer while the hoarder is glorified. And, contradiction of contradictions, the crucified Christ becomes the Christ who reigns. And so we become like him. —Rev. Joseph J. Juknialis Copyright © 2014, World Library Publications. The concept of who God is remains beyond the grasp of human philosophy; but that does not keep people from trying to figure it out. The Gospels speak of God as Father, Creator of the Universe, but also says that all creation comes forth through Jesus, the Son of God. Jesus speaks about the Holy Spirit, who also participates in Creation, and who is depicted with divine attributes. This division of Persons in God was problematic to a faith with its roots in the strict monotheism of Judaism. On the surface of things, it looked like Christians were talking about three Gods, but the Church insisted that there was only One God. The Catholic Bishops used the term Trinity to explain the relationship between Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The term comes from the Latin Trinitas which was first applied to the concept of the three Persons in One God by the third century Latin theologian, Tertullian, who also employed the terms “person” and “substance” and wrote that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are “one in essence—not one in Person.” Earlier, Ignatius of Antioch and Justin Martyr, both around 100 AD, spoke of the Father, Son, and Spirit as God, but the term “Trinity” was not applied to the relationship between them until a century later. Various interpretations existed by the fourth century of exactly what “Trinity” meant, and how Three Persons could be One God. In the very early fourth century, a priest named Arius lived in Alexandria, North Africa. Arius spent a lot of time thinking about this, and reached a conclusion different than Tertullian. Arius claimed that if the Father begot the Son, then there was a time before the Son of God existed. His catch phrase was “there was when the Son was not.” According to Arius, if there was a time when the Son did not exist, and if he was begotten by the Father, then the Son was a Creation of the Father, and therefore, subordinate to the Father, not equal and not God. The Holy Spirit, according to Arius, flows forth from the Son, Jesus, and is therefore subordinate to both Father and Son, and also is not God. This theology rejects the whole notion of the Trinity, which the Catholic Bishops professed as truth. These teachings of Arius became known as Arianism. The concept was popular, as it was easier to understand than Trinitarian doctrine, and it spread quickly through the church. Arius composed little songs, much like advertising jingles that even children could remember, which promoted his views. It became a matter of great contention at all levels in society with brawls breaking out in merchant shops and grocery stalls over whether the Son of God was eternally equal with the Father, or the First and Highest of created beings, but nonetheless, a creature. Bishops also were divided between Arian and Trinitarian doctrine, so much so that rival churches began to develop within most cities. Alexander, Bishop of Alexandria, condemned and excommunicated Arius, but factions friendly to Arius rose up against Alexander continuing to spread the unorthodox teachings. Arianism spread quickly until the church was divided nearly in half between Arians and Trinitarians. The tension was so intense that it became troublesome to the Emperor Constantine. Constantine had some interest in Christianity, though he was not yet baptized, and his own Christian leanings were in favor of the Arianists. However, Constantine was more interested in Empirical unity than he was in theology, and saw this division in theology and the resulting schism within the church threatening to the peace and unity of the Empire. A divided Church meant a divided Empire. Therefore, Constantine summoned the Bishops, all the Bishops, to come together and arrive at a definitive statement of faith which would be either Trinitarian or Arian. He did not care much which side won, as long as the crisis was ended. And so, the First Ecumenical Council, to be held at Nicaea, near Constantinople, was called by Constantine in the year 325 A.D. And, so, the story of the Church continues...

Y nosotros llegamos a asemejarnos a él. —Padre Joseph J.
