From Fr. Faucher
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord 2015
First of all, I thank Bishop Peter Christensen for his visit to the parish last weekend. He is a splendid man. I thank all of those
involved with the liturgy and the reception in the parish hall. I hope he visits Saint Mary's often.
We have now come to Holy Week. This is the holiest and best week of the year for all Christians, and especially for Catholics.
This weekend we celebrate Palm Sunday with the palms and the first of the two readings of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
This year we use the Passion narrative from the Gospel of Mark.
Monday is called simply the Monday of Holy Week and Tuesday also just Tuesday of Holy Week. But historically, the rest of the
days have special names. Wednesday is Spy Wednesday, remembering that is the day in the readings when Judas agrees to betray Jesus. Thursday is called Holy Thursday or Maundy (which means washing) Thursday. Friday is Good Friday and Saturday is
Holy Saturday.
Each of these days has special religious events. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday the readings at the daily Mass are special and powerful readings, setting the stage for what is coming.
Thursday begins the ‘Sacred Triduum’, the three days of special faith and prayer. The Triduum is both the end of Lent and also
the depth of Lent. It is the beginning of the end and the end of the six week beginning of Lent.
There is only one Holy Thursday Mass allowed in each church. It is one of those times when the Spanish-speaking part of our
community and the English-speaking part share a common Mass. We wear white vestments and celebrate both the washing of
the feet and the institution of the Eucharist. All Catholics should attend Mass on Holy Thursday if they can do so. It is a very special
evening and ends with the transfer of the Blessed Sacrament to a special place remembering Jesus going to the Garden. We also
have the custom of blessing bread at the Holy Thursday liturgy.
There is then a time of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the garden chapel. There cannot be Mass on either Good Friday
or during the day of Holy Saturday. In a special sense, the Mass of Holy Thursday does not end, it continues until the lighting of the
Easter Fire on Saturday night. Instead, on Good Friday there is the Solemn Liturgy of Good Friday with the Reading of the Passion
from the Gospel of John, the Veneration of the Cross, and the distribution of communion saved from the night before.
Holy Saturday is to be just a day of quiet and rest. Holy Saturday ends with the lighting of the Easter Fire and the Easter Vigil,
which is the first Mass of Easter. It is one of the three days of the year when the Great Doors of Saint Mary’s are open. The Easter
Vigil and first Mass of Easter is the time when all of those coming into the church are received with great joy. I hope that as many of
us as possible will be able to come to all of the Holy Week liturgies. A full schedule of them is elsewhere in the bulletin.
God bless and keep you this Holy Week ~ Fr. Tom Faucher
Holy Week or Great Week (as we call it in Mexico) begins with the celebration of Jesus' entry into Jerulalem and concludes with
His Resurrection. I would like to invite all of us to live out, in our own lives, the Paschal mystery that we celebrate. If we have died to
sin in our lives, then we can experience the joy that the Resurrection brings, because we have gone from death to life, from sin to
grace and from slavery to freedom as God's sons and daughters. May our week be truly a holy one.
Your friend and servant ~ Fr. Jesús Camacho

ADDRESSING SEXUAL ORIENTATION Need someone to talk with, in
strictest confidentiality, about your
son’s, daughter’s or other family
member’s sexual orientation? Fortunate Families, a national resource
and networking ministry, was developed in response to the pastoral message from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, “Always
Our Children 1997”, to help family members address the topic of sexual orientation. One way to accomplish this goal is to talk to people
who have lived a similar experience. The Listening Parents Network
(LPN) was created by Fortunate Families to provide this listening
opportunity. Please go to: www.fortunatefamilies.com for more information. St. Mary’s local contacts are: Russ and Genie Calkins 3317941 or genieac@ hotmail.com. This is not a forum to debate the pros
or cons of Church teachings on the issue. The church teachings are
referenced in “Always Our Children” available at http:///www.usccb/
laity/always.shtml or on the bulletin board at St. Mary’s Church.
POPE FRANCIS
LENTEN TIPS
Take part in the sacraments “Lent is a favorable time for
letting Christ serve us so that we in turn may become more
like him. This happens whenever we hear the word of God
and receive the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. There
we become what we receive: the Body of Christ.” – Lenten
Message, 2015
