His love is to be revealed to all the world (Ps), as Peter himself taught (1). FIRST READING — ACTS 10:25-26 The gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Gentiles also. RESPONSORIAL — PSALM 98 The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power. SECOND READING — 1 JOHN 4:7-10 God is love. GOSPEL — JOHN 15:9-17 No one has greater love than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. T REASURE S T FROM OUR RADITIONS With June not far off, attention in the parish turns to the celebration of weddings. Perhaps no other area of parish life is more shaped or challenged by the expectations of our culture. An old Irish proverb, “Marry in Lent and you’re soon to repent,” is amplified by another warning: “Marry in May and rue the day!” Memories of old pagan parties in May endured, and the Irish felt wedding receptions in May would be a stress on community morals. Queen Victoria did not approve of May weddings either, and her influence is still felt on family calendars, as is her daughter’s introduction of the white wedding gown. Sometimes we mistake customs and curiosities for tradition. Tradition with a capital “T” has to do with Christ’s miraculous rescue of the wedding feast at Cana, his affirmation of a man and woman pledging lifelong fidelity at the heart of a community’s feast. The Church cherished that memory over time, but it took a millennium for us to think of marriage as a sacrament. Much of the rest of what we associate with weddings has to do with culture, customs, and family practices. A wise rabbi once said that “tradition is not wearing your father’s hat; tradition is having a child.” Don’t let Queen Victoria reign over your wedding plans! James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. GRANT, ALMIGHTY GOD, that we may celebrate with heartfelt devotion these days of joy, which we keep in honor of the risen Lord, and that what we relive in remembrance we may always hold to in what we do. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. LOVE ONE ANOTHER Last Sunday we heard the familiar passage from John’s Gospel in which Jesus uses the metaphor of the vine and the branches. In that passage we were told that if we remained in Christ we would bear much fruit. Today’s Gospel tells us just what that fruit is: love. Today’s second reading and Gospel together create a great hymn to love. The chorus of this hymn is simple—God loves us so much that Jesus was sent into the world so that we would have life. The Lord Jesus, who last week told us to remain in him, this week tells us to remain in his love. In a world marked by division and terrorism, the Lord’s final words in today’s Gospel are a great challenge: Copyright © J. S. REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD We can get caught up in the details and miss the heart of the message today. Where did Jesus go? Is heaven "up there"? Why doesn't Matthew's Gospel have Jesus being taken up? Doesn't this feast remove Jesus from us, to some place where he "sits at the right hand of the Father"? Sound a little disengaged? In his introduction to the writings of St. Bernard of Clairvaux, Jean Leclercq writes that the mystery of the Ascension fulfilled the mystery of love in which Jesus returns to the glory of the Father. The Son then sends the Spirit to unite us with the Father in love. Thus, in Bernard's thought, the Ascension is a symbol for the passage of Christ from his life in mortal flesh to glorious life in the Spirit. This same transition from flesh to Spirit can also be accomplished in us, since it has already taken place in Christ. But we are not simply passive recipients. There is work to be done. Luke's angels bluntly tell the apostles to get moving. Matthew's final scene spells out the work: "Go forth and make disciples, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and teaching others to observe all that I have commanded you" (Matthew 28:19). Witness to Jesus, in word and deed. The task of spreading the good news that is Jesus Christ, teaching others about him, can seem daunting. But we are not alone. We have the promise that the Holy Spirit will work with us; in Matthew, Jesus' final words are reassuring: "I am with you always" (28:20). That is reason enough to work with confidence.
