FROM OUR RADITIONS
With June not far off, attention in the parish turns to the celebration of weddings. Perhaps no other area of parish life is more shaped or challenged by the
expectations of our culture. An old Irish proverb, “Marry in Lent and you’re soon
to repent,” is amplified by another warning: “Marry in May and rue the day!”
Memories of old pagan parties in May endured, and the Irish felt wedding receptions in May would be a stress on community morals. Queen Victoria did
not approve of May weddings either, and her influence is still felt on family calendars, as is her daughter’s introduction of the white wedding gown. Sometimes
we mistake customs and curiosities for tradition. Tradition with a capital “T” has
to do with Christ’s miraculous rescue of the wedding feast at Cana, his affirmation of a man and woman pledging lifelong fidelity at the heart of a community’s feast. The Church cherished that memory over time, but it took a millennium for us to think of marriage as a sacrament. Much of the rest of what we associate with weddings has to do with culture, customs, and family practices. A
wise rabbi once said that “tradition is not wearing your father’s hat; tradition is
having a child.” Don’t let Queen Victoria reign over your wedding plans!

GRANT, ALMIGHTY GOD, that we may celebrate with heartfelt devotion these days of joy, which we keep in honor of the risen Lord, and that
what we relive in remembrance we may always hold to in what we do.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son who lives and reigns with you in the
unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
LOVE ONE ANOTHER
Last Sunday we heard the
familiar passage from John’s
Gospel in which Jesus uses the
metaphor of the vine and the
branches. In that passage we
were told that if we remained in
Christ we would bear much fruit.
Today’s Gospel tells us just
what that fruit is: love. Today’s
second reading and Gospel together create a great hymn to
love. The chorus of this hymn is
simple—God loves us so much
that Jesus was sent into the
world so that we would have
life.
The Lord Jesus, who last
week told us to remain in him,
this week tells us to remain in his
love. In a world marked by division and terrorism, the Lord’s
final words in today’s Gospel
are a great challenge:

CHURCH MISSION
with Fr. Pat Martin
MAY 16-19
Fr. Pat Martin is a blind priest who travels to parishes all
over the world. We are blessed to have him here at St.
Joseph because of his family connection to parishioners, Cindy Stophlet and Susan Barry.
The title of the Mission is "Finding God's Love in our
Broken Lives." Fr. Pat is giving the homily at each English Mass this weekend.
He will be available to hear confessions Monday morning from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and Tuesday morning following the 8:15 a.m. Mass. He will also hear
confessions from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Monday
and Tuesday evenings. At the special Masses at 6:30
p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, Fr. Pat will deliver his
second and third talks.
The theme for the mission is “God’s Love in our Broken
Lives.” Talk topics include: “God’s Love for Me,”
“God’s Forgiving Love,” and “The Scandal of Suffering
in God’s Love.”

SUMMER BIBLE INSTITUTE

about Jesus. The summer Bible Institute sponsored by Little Rock Scripture Study is June 19
-21 at St. John Center in Little Rock. Renowned biblical scholar, Fr. Donald Senior,
CP, will lead us through this powerful experience. Join with adult Catholics from around the country for
solid teaching, prayer, and discussion. Paid registration of

REFLECTING
ON GOD’S WORD
We can get caught up in the details and miss the heart of the
message today. Where did Jesus go? Is heaven "up there"?
Why doesn't Matthew's Gospel have Jesus being taken up?
Doesn't this feast remove Jesus from us, to some place where
he "sits at the right hand of the Father"? Sound a little disengaged?
In his introduction to the writings of St. Bernard of Clairvaux,
Jean Leclercq writes that the mystery of the Ascension fulfilled
the mystery of love in which Jesus returns to the glory of the
Father. The Son then sends the Spirit to unite us with the Father in love. Thus, in Bernard's thought, the Ascension is a
symbol for the passage of Christ from his life in mortal flesh
to glorious life in the Spirit. This same transition from flesh to
Spirit can also be accomplished in us, since it has already
taken place in Christ.
But we are not simply passive recipients. There is work to be
done. Luke's angels bluntly tell the apostles to get moving.
Matthew's final scene spells out the work: "Go forth and make
disciples, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit, and teaching others to observe all that I have
commanded you" (Matthew 28:19). Witness to Jesus, in word
and deed.
The task of spreading the good news that is Jesus Christ,
teaching others about him, can seem daunting. But we are
not alone. We have the promise that the Holy Spirit will work
with us; in Matthew, Jesus' final words are reassuring: "I am
with you always" (28:20). That is reason enough to work with
confidence.

MARRIAGE MOMENTS
by Susan Vogt, www.SusanVogt.net
Praying together as a couple can be a deep and perhaps
awkward form of intimacy. It takes great trust to pour out your
heart to God in the presence of your spouse. A first step may
be praying for each other even if not in one another's presence. A second step may be silent meditation in each other's
presence. Take a step this week. More ideas.
Are you a woman or man of prayer?
Are you comfortable working with small groups?

materials. It will be conducted in a retreat setting and discernment atmosphere. Come and discern if God is calling you to
become a facilitator! Or, if you are simply interested in finding out more about Ignatian Prayer and the Lord, Teach Me

As we remember Jesus ascending into heaven, perhaps you
and your child could "lift up" in prayer the memory of deceased relatives who have gone to be with God. Even though
we don't know where "heaven" is, children can watch a balloon or kite ascend toward the heavens - and pray.
THE SHIP OF THE CHURCH
The Church is like a great ship being pounded by
the waves of life’s different stresses. Our duty is not
to abandon ship, but to keep her on her course.

Jim Weir
has been involved in Youth Ministry since 1996 and comes to
us after serving as a youth minister at parishes in Texas and Florida. He and his
wife, Heather, are the creators and directors of Alive in You Catholic Conference

their five children. He has been a keynote speaker at Catholic conferences, retreats, and service camps throughout the
United States, has led mission trips to various foreign
countries, and has a degree in marketing from Mississippi
State University. Jim is already making big plans for the
fall to kick off Youth Ministry at Saint Joseph in a big,
new way. Be looking for more information in the
coming weeks!
From Jim...
What I bring to the table: I bring strong understanding of the culture in which our young people live. I
have a deep love for our Catholic faith, and an ability
to inspire and motivate young people to live their
lives for Christ.
My Catholic Hero: My dad - he's a great father and
husband, and he'll do whatever it takes to support his
family.
Favorite Sports Team: Mississippi State Basketball
(Go Dawgs!)
Favorite Food: Greasy New York Pizza.
Favorite Childhood Toy: Optimus Prime, leader of the
Autobots. Transformers! More than meets the eye!
If it was an Olympic event, I would win a gold medal
for: Watching College Basketball.
Favorite late night snack: Powdered Doughnut Gems
and Milk.
I do a great imitation of: A float at the Macy's
Thanksgiving Day Parade.
I'm most proud of: Being able to provide for my
family so Heather is able to stay at home with our
children.

ASCENSION OF THE LORD
A Ti
¡Oh clemente, oh piadosa, oh dulce Virgen María!
