Overview - Past, Present and Future
Dear WHS families:
From Principal
I enjoyed back to school night, and if you missed
it, I have a suggestion from a campus committee to Diane Burbank
sit side-by-side with your student at the computer
and clicking on each teacher’s School Loop portal
as a way to have your student “walk” you through his/her school day.
I am looking forward to cooler mornings, Homecoming floats, the WHS
Foundation’s annual campaign, and end of
daylight savings time on Sunday, November
1st. Your student is busy as quarter grades
are issued in mid-October, and it’s not too
far ahead to record finals dates on your
household calendar; the semester ends in
December, and students sit for finals before
winter break, December 14 - 17. If you are
concerned now with a lack of progress reflected on your student’s report card, reach
out to the teachers now. The district expectation is that teachers post homework on School Loop, and that grades are updated at each progress report deadline and quarter’s
end for a total of eight times per year or every four
weeks. Many teachers update far more regularly
than that. Check on the next pages for all the afterschool assistance available for your student.
Last spring, we gathered on-campus data on student
stress and ability to sleep, complete homework, and
engage in activities (both on and off campus). One
data point came through the annual My Voice survey as part of the 8 CONDITIONS OF STUDENT SUCCESS, and then we drilled down deeper with follow-up questions as students registered for classes with counselors. The Shared Decision Making Council
(SDMC), along with department chairs on campus, is determining next steps.
Last spring, our Parent Ed Series moderated and
boys and growing up with expectations to be
strong. On Thursday, November 5, we are
hosting a workshop with Brie Mathers about
girls and body image that will make a great
parent/daughter night out. See you there!

Athletics Corner
Fall sports are in full swing and we have grown our athletic program
for 2015-16! Commensurate with our theme for this year in athletics,
‘Opportunity, Growth, Achievement’, Woodside has added two frosh
teams for the fall in our volleyball and football programs. Although
these squads will be playing as independents and a limited schedule,
this expansion opens up opportunities for more student-athletes to participate and improve their skills. Please thank both coaching staffs for
taking on the extra work to make these teams possible. In addition, the district has begun using Sports Net as our online
clearance system for athletics. Although there have been a few growing pains, in the long run this system will provide
more efficiency and ease for athletes, coaches and administrators. You are welcome to provide feedback on the program
as we have worked with the developer to make the system more user-friendly and effective for our needs at Woodside.
Remember that winter sports will begin on November 2 nd, and all athletes must be cleared by October 30 th, so make your
physical appointments now to ensure your child’s participation in winter sports. A sports physical is valid for only one
year, and students cannot participate in any sport until they have been cleared by Jocelyn Tejeda, Mr. Calderon’s assistant. We wish the best to all our athletes and coaches for a successful 2015-16, if you have any questions feel free to
contact the Athletic Director, Chuck Velschow ([email protected]).

Homecoming Week-October 19-23
Homecoming is an exciting time at Woodside High School. Each day the students dress up according to their grades'
theme for the day. On Friday, Student Activities hosts an all school assembly in which each grade performs a skit. During the football game at half-time, the classes present their floats to the crowd. All students are encouraged to get involved with their grade and help plan out the homecoming activities. Students can learn more and get involved by attending their respective class board meetings on Wednesdays during lunch.
Seniors meet in E-16
Juniors meet in E-9
Sophomores meet in C-5
Freshmen meet in E-5
Information will also be made available on the Woodside High school website (under Student Life, select Student Activities) as well as social media.
Finally the celebration concludes on Saturday October 24 with the homecoming dance in the New Gym from 7:30-10:30.
Tickets for the dance are sold on campus the two weeks prior. Please note that tickets are NOT sold at the door.
Support Student Activities
Ever go to a game or purchased a dance ticket and wondered where is this money going? Money raised through the purchase of PAL stickers, as well as ticket sales from sports and dances go to Student Activities which supports ALL students at Woodside. Over the years Student Activities has paid for officials for all athletics, supported lunch time intramurals, provided supplies to students in need of assistance and has sponsored a variety of events for students. Student
Activities is happy to support all the students at Woodside High School. Thank you to everyone who comes out the
games or gives their student money to go to the dance.

CLASS OF 2018
One year down, three to go! Can you believe how fast our freshman
year went?
Thanks to the families who helped out last year with our direct appeal
campaign and the senior graduation brunch, and attended our meetings!
A major responsibility of the Class of 2018 Parent Group is to raise
funds for the Safe & Sober Grad night event. Our fundraising activities
this year will be largely determined by the success of PTSA membership drive: join the PTSA and add a donation to the Class of 2018
fund. You can join the PTSA online via PayPal and mailing a check. Go to the PTSA website at
woodsidehs-ptsa.org for more information.
In addition to raising money for our Class of 2018 Safe & Sober Grad Night, we have specific jobs
each year, and sophomore parents are responsible for:


Helping with the logistics and needs of our sophomore class’ homecoming float decorating
Providing and serving snacks after the graduation ceremony in June.
(Junior year has a much bigger responsibility, so let’s enjoy this sophomore year!)
To sign up to volunteer and/or donate food and drink items for these activities, go to our page on the
PTSA website: http://woodsidehs-ptsa.org/class-parent-groups/class-of-2018-parents-group/.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR: The Class of 2018 Par ents Gr oup meets the four th Tuesday of
the month in the MUR Conference Room. Please join us! Our next meeting is Tuesday, October 27
at 7 PM in the MUR Conference Room.
We are using a Google group to communicate. Email us at [email protected] to be added to the
Google group.
Thanks, and here’s to a GREAT year!
Reminders from the Treasurer's Office:
We never take checks for payment of dance tickets or entrance to athletic events. Students need
a current ID card when purchasing dance tickets and entering the dance. Lost your ID card?
Replacement cards can be ordered up to the day before the last day of ticket sales for $5 in D5.
Contact Kathy at ext. 4319 if you have any questions.
