The Ignatian Corner!
Laudato Si’ – A Review and Personal Commentary - 4
On Care of Our Common Home
The Common Destination of Goods
“The earth is essentially a shared inheritance, whose fruits are meant to benefit everyone.” (#93) Chief
Seattle’s letter in response to President Franklin Pierce’s asking him to sell some of the Suquamish land reads:
“But how can you buy or sell the sky? the land? This idea is strange to us.” In Africa, children consider it, not
stealing, but a right, to go into someone’s yard and pluck fruit from a tree. To use one’s gifts in such a way that
it benefits only a few is, therefore, unjust, there is a social purpose is all forms of private property. (#93)
VII The Gaze of Jesus
Jesus taught everyone that God is the Father who loves them. (#96) His parables indicate that He had
contemplated the things of the earth (e.g. a mustard seed) and could use them to explain divine realities (#97)
He Himself is the Son who took on human flesh (#99) and, thus, has been able to “deliver all things to the
Father.” (I Cor. 15:28) (#100) Francis is tapping into Teilhard de Chardin’s Cosmic Christ. The nature of the
Divine Milieu is the omnipresence of God. God is everywhere; God is in all things; God is especially seen in
the Cosmic Christ. Jesus, who is fully divine and fully human, is also the fullness (Greek: pleroma) of God
(Col.1:19) and the center of all creation; all things have been created through Him and for Him (Col.1:17).
Teilhard’s spirituality can be stated like this: When a person deeply desires to be one with God, that person can
enjoy the beauty of nature, use the elements of the earth to create benefits for human beings, find good even in
the evils and negative things that we do, and see God at work in all of God’s creatures. [These last two points
are given with the help of Louis Savary, The Divine Milieu Explained, Paulist Press, 2007.]
Chapter Three: The Human Roots of the Ecological Crisis:
This chapter “focuses on the dominant technocratic paradigm and the place of human beings and of
human actions in the world.” (#101) Thus, it delivers into the philosophy and the ethics of science and cultural
attitudes.
I Technology: Creativity and Power
Francis has a positive, but critical, attitude toward science; he himself has a degree in chemistry. He
notes the numerous benefits of technology; steam engines, railways, the telegraph, electricity, automobiles,
airplanes, chemical industries, modern medicine, information technology, and, more recently, the digital
revolution, robotics, biotechnologies, and nanotechnologies. (#102) Technoscience can improve the quality of
human life. (#103) But all of this power can also kill millions of people. (#104) We humans need to make free
and responsible decisions on how we use technological power. (#105) Footnote 83 is the first of six citations
from Roman Guardini, Das Ende de Neuzeit, 9th ed., Wurzburg, 1965 (English: The End of the Modern W orld,
Wilmington, 1998.) Fr. Bergoglio studied Guardini when he did his doctoral studies in theology in Germany. It
is amazing to note how ahead of his time Guardini was and to notice that Francis’ thinking on the positive and
negative effects of technology upon the environment are of such a long-standing nature.
II The Globalization of the Technocratic Paradigm
Francis exposes the globalization of the TECHNOCRATIC PARADIGM as undifferentiated and onedimensional. (A Paradigm is, literally, a pattern, example or model. Specifically, it is an overall concept
accepted by most people in an intellectual community, as those in one of the natural sciences, because of its
effectiveness in explaining a complex process, idea, or set of data. “Technocratic” refers to a system in which
the social and economic resources are ruled or governed by scientists and engineers. Cf. W ebster’s World
Dictionary) This technocratic paradigm exalts the concept of a subject who, using logical and rational
procedures, progressively approaches and gains control over an extended object.” In the past this process was
done in rhythm with nature. But now, “it is based on the lie that there is an infinite supply of the earth’s goods,
and this leads to the planet being squeezed dry beyond every limit.” (#106) Technological products are not
ethically neutral, because they create a framework that ends up conditioning lifestyles (e.g. keeping up with the
Joneses) and shaping social possibilities along the lines of the powerful; the poor are not included. The people
who support this technocratic paradigm show “no interest in more balanced levels of productivity, a better
distribution of wealth, concern for the environment, and the rights of future generations. Their behavior shows
that for them maximizing profits is enough.” (#109) Yet, the Pope states that there are positive alternatives to
the technocratic paradigm: cooperatives of small producers, technology which is directed primarily to resolving
people’s concrete problem, and the desire to create and contemplate beauty. (#112)

2nd Collection This Weekend,
October 17/18
World Mission Sunday! In Scripture,
we read that St. Paul asked the Gentile
Churches to take up a collection to
support the Church in Jerusalem.
Now we are asked to reach out and
support the young churches
throughout our world. Your prayers
and generous gifts to the Society for the Propagation
of the Faith in the collection this weekend will help
missionaries offer the poor of these areas practical
help as they share the mercy of God. It will ensure
the development of local dioceses, and support the
work of priests, religious and lay leaders who serve
those on the margins and in most need. Go out to the
whole world through your gift in today’s collection!

Many Jesuits (our priests are Jesuits) travel the world
to spread the Good News – just ask Fathers Dominic
& Don. This week we celebrate the lives of the first
martyrs of the North American continent officially
recognized by the Church. Saints Isaac Jogues, Jean
de Brébeuf and their companions were French Jesuits
who traveled to the New World (North America) to
work with Indians in the early 1600s. The Indians did
not welcome them and the men became martyrs for
the faith. In 1930 these eight men were canonized as
saints by the Catholic Church.

Class Spotlight
The Loyola Press’ Finding
God series for students in 3rd
grade quickly picks up where
the students left off – at the
sacrament of Holy
Communion. Now that the
students are more fully participating in the Mass, they
learn what it means to be members of the faith
community. They are taught about faith and what it
means to believe in and trust our unseen God. The
students learn about the Creed and the mysteries of
faith that it professes. Through the study of scripture,
they learn of God’s work through his Son and the
Holy Spirit.
The classroom activities continue and include making
booklets about the mysteries of the Rosary and
scripture studies. All of this study is early preparation
for the next sacrament of initiation – Confirmation.

servido, sino a servir.
