Our English word hypocrite comes from a Greek word that is pronounced almost the same. The Greeks often used the word to describe acting, but its root meaning is closer to this: “One who pretends or acts under a mask.” We might describe such a person as “two-faced.” There are several places in the gospels where Jesus calls the Pharisees hypocrites because they say one thing and do another. Their actions appear to be part of a show so that others will think that they are good and holy. Jesus cuts to the heart of the matter when he points out that clinging to the letter of the law is not what makes someone holy. Rather, it is the person with a pure heart free of greed, malice, envy, and evil of all kinds who is closer to God. Jesus has the Old Testament Scriptures on his side. Psalm 15 lays out a wonderful description of the ones who will dwell with God forever in heaven. First and foremost, they are not hypocrites. Rather, they have integrity of heart and speak the truth (15:2). They “never defame a neighbor” (15:3). They practice what they preach and do it for the greater glory of God. We all have moments when we act better (or sometimes worse) than we are because we want to appear differently to others. The challenge for us today is to be genuine, to let the love of God become the model for how we love. Then we will have no need to worry about whether we are following the law. Our own actions will tell us so. Mary Katharine Deeley [email protected] St. Gregory the Great Adoration Society “Would you not spend one hour with Me?” Eucharistic Adoration is adoring the Eucharistic Presence of Christ Our Perpetual Adoration Chapel gives us an opportunity to spend an hour of prayer and give thanks for the many blessings we have received. This hour in peace and meditation with the Blessed Sacrament can also be an opportunity to pray for our friends and family who are sick or just need our prayers. Christ instituted this Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist in order to remain with mankind until the end of time (Jn. 14:18). Our wish is to have someone present for each of the 24 hours throughout the day in silent contemplation and reflection. We can use more adorers for this ministry. Please be generous with your time and sign up for one hour of adoration. If you have any questions or feel you can sign up for just one hour per week please call John Klinger 757-7454 or send an email to [email protected]. Salmo — ¿Quién será grato a tus ojos, Señor? (Salmo 15 [14]). LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Martes: Miércoles: Jueves: Viernes: Sábado: Domingo: 1 Tes 4:13-18; Sal 96 (95):1, 3-5, 11-13; Lc 4:16-30 1 Tes 5:1-6, 9-11; Sal 27 (26):1, 4, 13-14; Lc 4:31-37 Col 1:1-8; Sal 52 (51):10-11; Lc 4:38-44 Col 1:9-14; Sal 98 (97):2-6; Lc 5:1-11 Col 1:15-20; Sal 100 (99):1b-5; Lc 5:3339 Col 1:21-23; Sal 54 (53):3-4, 6, 8; Lc 6:15 Is 35:4-7a; Sal 146:7-10; Stgo 2:1-5; Mc 7:31-37 TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Pobres fariseos, cómo les echamos piedras. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Adult Education Workshop Presented By Deacon Denny Burkett Saturday, September 26, 2015 9:30 a.m.—11:30 a.m. St. Gregory the Great Catholic School Library Communication: It’s more complicated than just talking and listening From creation, God gave both man and woman a means by which they could communicate with each other. We know from the story of Adam and Eve that they didn’t master this gift very well. How well do we communicate with others? Whether it’s within our marriage, our family, our place of employment, it seems we all could do better. In this session, we will examine the issues of why we have difficulties when it comes to sharing our thoughts and emotions with others, especially with loved ones. We don’t have to go through life feeling that no one listens to us or understands us; that no one cares about us. We all have the ability to be both good talkers and good listeners. In doing so, we can make a difference in the world and be the person God created us to be. Please call the Parish Office to register 843-815-3100. We respond to calls from our help line by visiting callers in their homes, apartments and trailers. They need food, rent, water and electricity. We see their needs up close, hear their stories, verify the facts and make sure your money does as much good as possible. Come join us, as a contributor or as a member. To contribute, please use the envelopes at either side of the church doors or write to us at 333 Fording Island Rd., Bluffton, SC 29909. We welcome new members every 1st Saturday of each month at 9:30 a.m. in St. Andrew Hall. Deacon Thomas J Berney Conference Phone: 866-324-6135 In the Beginning … Week 24 From Chris: "I have fine hair all over my body that is there to protect my skin. I will lose all this body hair before I am born. I'm a little thin at this point but am putting on more baby fat. I am almost 12 whole inches long." Fifty years ago, if the baby was born at this age, the child could not have survived. Today, with modern technology, babies born at Chris's age have a fighting chance (about 50%) of survival. "Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid." Matthew 10:30-31 Spiritual Adoption Prayer Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion. Amen.
