December 5 / 6, 2015 Dear Parishioners, In the second week of Advent we have a full schedule of Marian Celebrations and the beginning of the special Jubilee Year of Mercy. On Tuesday, December 8th, we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, the Immaculate Conception. Under this title, Mary is the patroness of the United States and also for our Redemptorist Community. Because this feast day is so important to us and our spiritual journey, it is a Holy Day of Obligation. We will have masses on Monday, December 7th at 7:00 PM and on Tuesday, December 8th at 12:00 noon and a bilingual Mass at 7:00 PM. On Friday, the Redemptorists celebrate the actual 150th anniversary when Pope Pius IX gave them the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and told them, “Make her known.” To celebrate this jubilee we will begin our weekly, Wednesday novena service in honor of Our Mother of Perpetual Help following the 12:15 Mass on December 9th. On Saturday, we will celebrate the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Under this title, Mary is the Patroness of the Americas. We will begin our festivities at 10:00 AM in the pavilion with the rosary in Spanish and English followed by a procession to the Church. We will have the Mass of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Spanish followed by presentations, folkloric dances, and traditional Hispanic foods in the gym and the parish hall beginning around noon. Everyone is invited to participate in all or parts of the celebration. As we honor “Mary, mother of mercy,” we also begin the YEAR OF MERCY. Seeing a great need for mercy and healing in the world, Pope Francis called for the Year of Mercy—a special period, also known as a Holy Year or Jubilee Year, for the Catholic Church. It is a time for the Church across the world to take almost a full year to focus on forgiveness and healing in a special way. Pope Francis has also asked us as individuals and as a Church “to be a witness of mercy” by reflecting on and practicing the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. Beginning December 8, 2015, the Holy Year of Mercy will focus on studying and reflecting on mercy, receiving mercy, and being merciful towards others. To read more, visit the Vatican’s official website for the Year of Mercy, http://www.iubilaeummisericordiae.va . May this coming week as we celebrate Mary, the highly favored daughter of God and the one who was full of grace, and this celebration of the Year of Mercy bring us many graces to strengthen us in following Jesus. In preparation for the Year of Mercy Ms. Torok and Ms. Janus' 7th grade class read about Sister Rosemary Nyirumbe. Time Magazine named Sister Rosemary one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2014. She was honored for her healing work with young child mothers. Her community, the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, run a school in Uganda. The 7th grade class is collecting pop tabs from cans of soda. "People think pop tabs are trash and they throw them away," says Sister Rosemary. "I tell them 'Please, throw them away with love. Send them to me." The young women in the school use the pop tabs to make purses. The money earned from one handbag can provide a woman and her child with a mattress, three daily meals, and water for six month. The 7th grade class is asking for your help. Please send us your pop tabs. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. You can drop the tabs off at the Church Office or put them in an envelope labeled "7th Grade Class" and drop them in the collection basket. This is a great way to perform some of the corporal works of mercy without even leaving home. Saints Class Saints Class meets each Thursday in the Family Life Center Library from 2:00PM - 3:30PM. Envíelos a mi.” National Council of the United States, Society of St. Vincent de Paul Disaster Services Division House In a Box® is the response from the National Society of St. Vincent de Paul to any natural disaster affecting families with loss of household furnishings. The House In A Box® program (hereafter referred to as HIB®) provides new furniture which includes a bed for every family member (with linens, pillows and bedspreads), up to two dressers, a sofa, a kitchen table with 4 chairs, kitchen supplies to include dishes, pots and pans, glasses, and flatware, and bathroom supplies which include towels, washcloths, a shower curtain with rings and a bathmat. There are currently 21 disasters being responded to by The National Society. Because of this, we are ordering furniture from national manufacturers on a constant basis and are able to use this purchasing power to purchase the furniture at a good price. The average cost of furniture for a family of four is approximately $1850- an excellent use of funding resources! In order to purchase the furniture, money is being raised and warehouse space is being secured. Once warehouse space is secured and $50,000.00 has been raised, we will order the first 25 kits of furniture from HIB®. Applications will be screened to see who is ready to receive the furniture, and families who have been vetted will be called to pick up their furniture. This process will be continued until every eligible family receives new furniture or we can no longer raise the funds necessary to continue. We are expecting this project to continue for up to 18-24 months. Donations should be made out to “SVDP Charleston Diocesan Disaster Fund” and mailed to the same address as the intake center-3512 Devine St., Columbia, SC 29205. You may also make a donation through PayPal on either the website or Facebook page. All donations are tax deductible. VETTING PROCESS FOR THOSE IN NEED: The first step is for families affected to come to the intake center at 3512 Devine St. in Columbia, S.C. to complete an application for the program. Applications must be taken at the intake center because consent forms for data exchange between agencies have to be signed in person. Applicants must have a FEMA number, a picture id, and must be in need of the furniture (which will be verified with FEMA). The intake center will be open Monday-Thursday from 10-4 at least through February, 2016. To verify we are open, call 803-254-7646. The days we will be closed during the upcoming holidays will be posted on our website @ http:\\hibsjsp.blogspot.com or Facebook page-“HIB-scmidlandsfloodrelief”. This is an interfaith endeavor with volunteers from many denominations participating at each level of relief. If you have any questions, please contact Marilyn Gray at 803-730-1241, [email protected] or Russ Jones @ 803-254-7647, [email protected]. Anyone wishing to volunteer may also contact Russ Jones. *No good or services were provided in exchange for this donation and all donations are tax deductible according to IRS codes for 501 c3 organizations.
