OUR PARISH COMMUNITY THANKS THE
DEACONS AND THEIR WIVES
FOR THEIR MANY YEARS OF SERVICE TO OUR COMMUNITY.
Deacons are called by God, authorized by the church, and ordained by a bishop to
the ministry of Word, Service, Compassion, and Justice, to both the community and
the congregation in a ministry that connects the two. Deacons exemplify Christian
discipleship and create opportunities for others to enter into discipleship.
The work of deacons is the work of justice, serving, and equipping others to serve
the needy, neglected, and marginalized with compassion and love. At the altar, the
deacon leads, teaches, and proclaims the Word in forming and nurturing disciples .
It has been said there is a time and place for everything.
We are blessed to have had these deacons as part of our parish and they will continue
to do so. We thank them for the many years and acts of kindness, encouragement and
the love and friendship they have given us. Together we have travelled together and
will continue to travel together on the road of our Catholic faith. May God bless both of
you always on your retirement.
Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Anthony Dao, Pastor

All Soul's Day
All Soul's Day is celebrated on November 2, just after the All Saints Day and is an official holiday of the Catholic Calendar
and it is a Roman Catholic day of remembrance for friends and loved ones who have left for their heavenly home. All Soul's
Day has its roots in the ancient times of festivals.
In All Soul's Day the friends and relatives of the departed souls pray and offer masses. In some places there are three Masses for the dead that are said by the clergy to assist the souls from Purgatory to Heaven: one for the celebrant, one for the
departed, and one for the pope. While the Feast of All Saints is a day to remember the glories of Heaven and those who are
there, the Feast of All Souls also reminds us of our obligations to live lives on the holy path and that there will be purification of the souls of those destined for Heaven.
The Feast of All Souls owes its beginning to seventh century monks who decided to offer the mass on the day after Pentecost for their deceased community members. However, the choice of the date (Nov 2) for All Soul's Day is attributed to St.
Odilo, the fifth abbot of Cluny (city of France famous for the Abby), because he wanted to follow the example of Cluny in
offering special prayers and singing the Office of the Dead on the day following the feast of All Saints.
The modern (western) view of death derives in part from Pre-Hispanic times. The Aztecs played a very important role in
the development of this tradition. Through their history, this festival emerged as one with many details and with a varied
interpretation to it. According to the Aztec beliefs, after a person's death his soul would pass through phases before they
reached the place of the dead. The Aztecs also believed that a person's destiny was founded at birth and that the soul of that
person depended on the type of death and life they lead. The type of a person's death would also determine what region
they would go to. Once they arrived to their specific region, a person's soul would either await transformation or linger,
awaiting the next destiny.
With the onset of the Spanish explorers in 1521 history brought about a mixture of the Catholic attitudes and indigenous
beliefs. The theological underpinning of the feast of All Souls is the acknowledgment of human frailty. Since few people
achieve perfection in this life but, rather, go to the grave still scarred with traces of sinfulness, some period of purification
seems necessary before a soul comes face-to-face with God...we Catholics call that Purgatory...thanks for reading and blessings, Dcn. Pat

YOUTH MINISTRY AND
FAMILY EVANGELIZATION
Information on Youth, Young Adults, Mission trips, Retreats and Family Catechesis
What does Comprehensive Youth Ministry look like here?
From the USCCB’s document, Renewing the Vision:
The ministry of catechesis has several distinct features that give
direction to catechetical programming. (It) recognizes that faith
development is lifelong and therefore provides developmentally
appropriate content and processes around key themes of the
Catholic faith that are responsive to the age-appropriate needs,
interests, and concerns of young and old…it teaches the core
content of the Catholic faith as presented in the Catechism of the
Catholic Church—the profession of faith, celebration of the Christian
mystery, life in Christ, and Christian prayer—in order to provide a
solid foundation for continued growth in faith and integrates
knowledge of the Catholic faith with the development of practical
skills for living the Catholic faith in today's world.
Join us in forming a community of parents by attending our parent
catechesis during our regular formation programs. Whether once a
month or every week, please take this opportunity to grow in faith
along with your teen. If you can’t come Sundays, join us Wednesday
afternoon at 2:30 or evening at 6:15. Check out the blue box for
more details.

Pat

Reflecting on God’s Word
Some people want the Beatitudes to be Jesus’ new commandments;
others, an eight-step program for dealing with our addiction to this
world; and still others, just one more grocery list of what we should
be stocking up on for a long winter’s journey to the Kingdom. The
Beatitudes are also, however, the face of Jesus in its boldest and most
daring profile. Every time we catch a glimpse of them in ourselves,
it’s like looking in the mirror and seeing what we someday will be.
The fact is, as St. John attests, it’s already begun. I keep bumping into
them, and so do you.
I think of someone I know who can’t stand division in his home. He
is absolutely driven to find healing solutions. He’s a peacemaker from
the word go. We all know those who are passionate about the weakest
among us. They refuse to keep their mouths shut, even at the cost of
losing other folks’ acceptance. They can’t seem to help it. Some seem
able to forgive without a second thought. Others honestly and deeply
hunger to be holy, not pious or religious but just good. And others
seem to enter into people’s pain with great compassion and sensitivity
in ways that I don’t. They actually mourn for the world.
And then there are those of us who don’t feel we live many of those
Beatitudes very well. Yet every once in a while something pops up
from God knows where, and it’s a bit of divinity in us that we’d never
believed could be there. Then we realize that it must be God’s doing
because it could never be our own. And if it is God’s doing, then we
must be God’s daughters and sons. What else could it mean? It’s like
looking in a mirror, and we didn’t even know what we were.
