EPIPHANY The word “epiphany” come from the Greek “epi” (“in,” “on,” “upon”) and “phaino” (“to appear,” “to manifest”). Thus, it means: God appears or is made manifest in human form. It is the gentile Christmas. We, in the Roman Church, have put our celebration of Christmas on the 25th of December. Although the shortest day of the year is December 22nd, the sun does not stop coming back in the morning until January 5th. This may be the reason why the Eastern Church has placed its celebration of Christmas on the 6th of January. Jesus is truly the LIGHT of the world. In his Spiritual Exercises (#267), St. Ignatius presents retreatants with “The Three Kings” as one the mysteries of Jesus to be contemplated. Fr. George Ganss, S.J. explains this: “Mysteries” here means the events or episodes in the life of Christ, the medieval sense of the word as found in the mystery plays, e.g. on the Nativity. Some of these events are also mysteries in the theological sense, i.e. a religious truth revealed by God that human beings cannot know by reason alone, e.g. the Trinity or the Eucharist. … Ignatius’ aim is to furnish a series of topics for contemplation during the retreat. This form of contemplation can also be used after the retreat is completed. He presents 51 mysteries from which a director may choose. All but two of them are from Scripture. Almost all of the topics are from Ludolph of Saxony’s book, Life of Christ. (from The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius pp. 178-179) Ignatius wants retreatants to place themselves in the scene so that they can see who the persons are, hear what they are saying, and observe what is happening; then, they can apply this to themselves and gain both insight and fruit from the event. As people read this passage, they can note: the difficulties people have in following the light, how Matthew applies a statement from Micah (5:1) to the birth of Jesus, the deceit of kings and what they will do to keep power, the symbolism of the gifts: gold= a sign of wealth; Jesus is king; frankincense = a sign of worship; Jesus is divine; myrrh = a sign of suffering; Jesus is a human being; (and this is why we give gifts at Christmastime), and that dreams are beneficial. In contemplating the glory of the Lord at His birth, the retreatants can come to see that Jesus is the Light of the World. So, the Star at Bethlehem is not found in the sky but in the crib. The retreatants can apply the mystery to themselves and recognize that wise men – and women -- still follow this Light. They can also note that opposition to Jesus did not start during Holy Week but at the very beginning of His life. As you contemplate this manifestation of God in human form, what else do you notice? The third Manifestation of Jesus is the Baptism at the Jordan River. In this gospel, Jesus, a human being, is manifested as God’s Son. Fr. Dominic The Epiphany of the Lord January 3, 2016 Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you. — Isaiah 60:1 PARISH SPIRITUAL LIFE RCIA Inquiry Thursday, January 7, 2016 at 7:00 PM Baptism Confirmation Presented by Deacon Joe Forgiveness - A Guide for Prayer. Jesus’ disciples knew the importance of forgiveness; they were to forgive up to seven times. But Jesus tells them that they are to forgive seventy times seven - in other words, an unlimited number of times. Since Jesus sees forgiveness as a way of life for those who follow him, it can be helpful for us to look at the topic of forgiveness both carefully and prayerfully. Epiphany of the Lord The tradition of giving gifts at Christmas is thought by some to be rooted in the gift giving of the Magi. In many cultures, gifts are not exchanged at Christmas, but rather on the feast of the Epiphany. Whenever you exchange your Christmas gifts, take some time to reflect on this tradition of gift giving at Christmas. Think of the best gift you have received. What was it? What made it special? Was it the gift itself, the thought that went into it, or the person who gave it to you? P. Donald Ward,SJ
