First, students are back in class, and that means school buses are making the rounds and children are crossing the street from what seems like every direction. We must go slowly and use extra caution if and when driving: the best start of a school year is a safe one. In the middle of September those who observe will begin the High Holy Days of the Jewish faith from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur. For all who will observe this annual, solemn period of introspection I wish for you serenity and peace. The first day of fall, when the earth’s axis is perpendicular to the sun and there are equal parts darkness and daylight, is coming up September 23. We are all well-advised to monitor changeable conditions to stay healthy as we lose daylight and the warm summer weather we’ve enjoyed. Best wishes for a great September! Sincerely, Toni N. Harp Mayor 2 NEW HAVEN SEPTEMBER (SEPTIEMBRE) 2015 o Message from Migdalia Castro Director of Elderly Services Greetings Friends: I hope that everyone had a peaceful, yet adventurous summer! She was. also, the First Hispanic to have served as an Electoral Vote for former U.S. President, Bill Clinton, as a delegate to the National Democratic Convention in 2004. In 2006, she ran for Secretary of State." Ms. Norma Rodriquez Reyes is the former wife of Tomas Reyes, former President of the NH Board of Alders, who now serves as the Chief of Staff to Mayor Toni Harp. She resides in New Haven, CT. We congratulate Ms. Norma Rodriquez Reyes and wish her many more success stories in each of her future endeavors. o Florence Virtue Homes 50th Anniversary By Margery Mills In 1965, the brand new Florence Virtue Homes opened in the Dixwell neighborhood and touted as part of New Haven’s “model city” urban renewal plan under then Mayor Richard Lee. On August 13, 2015 the 50th anniversary of the Florence Virtue Homes was celebrated in grand style. It was “beyond spectacular” said the still highly elated Office Manager, Peter Gadsby, and everyone “had a blast.” Ella Smith, anniversary committee chair, echoed those sentiments and remarked, “the people really enjoyed it.” They must have as it was estimated that close to 400 people attended including Mayor Toni Harp, Senator Gary HolderWinfield and Alder Brenda Foskey-Cyrus. Citations and proclamations from the Mayor, the Board of Alders, and from the State of Connecticut General Assembly were presented as well as remarks sent from Governor Malloy, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro and Senator Richard Blumenthal. Ella Smith served as the Organizing Committee Chair along with Mae Gibson Brown, Annie Hudson, Louise Lytle, Frances Kelly and Alexis Lawrence. Ella and Frances Kelly did a lot of homework at the New Haven Museum and researched the urban renewal era and also on the Florence Virtue Homes. The Dixwell-Newhallville Senior Center and the Florence Virtue Homes are close neighbors in the Orchard Street area, and several members of the Senior Center reside there such as Naomi Tisdale, Ella Smith and Inez Gray. Who was Florence Virtue of whom the homes were named? In the anniversary program write up, it states that Florence Sinclair Virtue was a Jamaica, West Indies native who relocated to New Haven. Mrs. Virtue was a life-long member of Dixwell Avenue Congregational Church. She was well known for her lay ministry of caring for the “hospitalized, the seriously ill and the bed-ridden. She was known by hundreds of people who benefitted from her selfless service.” “The Dixwell Avenue Congregational Church sponsored the creation of this housing complex which was named Florence Virtue Homes as a tribute to her many good works for the residents of the Dixwell neighborhood.” A few interesting facts: Florence Virtue’s 96 year old daughter Winifred Dixon is still living and resides in Hamden. There are two residents who moved into the new homes in 1965 and still reside there 50 years later. They are Pearl Chappell-Harris and Sheila Nelson. It really must be a “great place to live,” as the saying goes. COMMON WITH SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES Falls and fall injuries: Are more common than strokes and can be just as serious in their consequences Are the most preventable cause of needing nursing home placement Lead to problems with daily activities like dressing, bathing, and walking around Among adults 70 years and older: * 3 in 10 fall each year; *2 in 10 who need home health care after being in the hospital will fall during the first month after coming home *1 in 10 suffer a serious fall injury such as a broken bone or head injury *5 in 10 have problems getting up without help after they have fallen Falls cause over 90% of broken hips; only half of those who break their hip will get around like they did before their broken hip In the United States, 16 percent of all Emergency Department visits and almost 7 percent of all hospitalizations are for fall-related injuries PREVENTABLE Many of the health problems that increase the chance of falling are known and are treatable. Common, treatable health problems and hazards include problems with walking or moving around, medications, foot problems or unsafe footwear, blood pressure dropping too much on getting up, problems seeing, and tripping hazards at home. The more of these problems an older adult has, the greater the chance of falling. The good news is that you can decrease the chance of falling by improving these problems. A study conducted in Connecticut, funded by the National Institute on Aging , found that treating as many of these problems as possible decreased the likelihood of falling. THE COMMON HEALTH PROBLEMS FOR FALLING ARE: Problems walking or moving around 4 or more medications foot problems, unsafe footwear blood pressure drops too much on standing up/dizzy problems with seeing tripping hazards in your home Source: www.fallprevention.org 14 o NEW HAVEN SPETEMBER (SEPTIEMBRE) 2015 23 –29 DE SEPTIEMBRE ¡SEMANA DE LA PREVENCIÓN Y CREAR CONCIENCIA SOBRE LAS CAIDAS!
