They lived normal lives marked by sadness and joy, hardships and hopes, before reaching the glory of Heaven. But when they witnessed God’s love, they followed Him with all their heart, unconditionally and without hypocrisy; they dedicated their life to serving others, they bore suffering and adversities without hatred and responded to evil with good, spreading joy and peace.” As we celebrate the lives of four more Saints this week, let us offer the following prayers taken from the Roman Missal: Saint John Marie Vianney Saint Sixtus II (Feast Day: 4 August) (Feast Day: 7 August) Almighty and merciful God, Who made the Priest Saint John Marie Vianney wonderful in his pastoral zeal, grant, we pray, that through his intercession and example we may in charity win brothers and sisters for Christ Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen By the power of the Holy Spirit, we pray, almighty God, make us docile in believing the faith and courageous in confessing it, just as you granted Saint Sixtus and his companions that they may lay down their lives for the sake of Your Word and in witness to Jesus. Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Saint Cajetan Saint Dominic (Feast Day: 7 August) (Feast Day: 8 August) O God, Who endowed the Priest Saint Cajetan with the grace of imitating the apostolic way of life, grant us, through his example and intercession, to trust in you at all times and to seek unceasingly Your Kingdom. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. May Saint Dominic come to the help of Your Church by his merits and teaching, O Lord, and may he, who was an outstanding preacher of your truth, be a devoted intercessor on our behalf. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. NOW A WORD FROM OUR POPE (ABOUT THE FAMILY) POPE FRANCIS GENERAL AUDIENCE Saint Peter’s Square Wednesday, 25 March 2015 Prayer for the Synod of Bishops on the Family Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good morning! In our series of catecheses on the family, today’s is a special step: it will be a pause in prayer. Indeed, on 25 March in the Church we solemnly celebrate the Annunciation, the mystery of the Incarnation begins. The Archangel Gabriel visits a humble girl in Nazareth and proclaims to her that she will conceive and bear the Son of God. With this Annunciation the Lord illuminates and strengthens Mary’s faith, as He will also do for her spouse Joseph, so that Jesus could be born into a human family. This is very beautiful: it shows us how deeply the mystery of the Incarnation, as God desired, encompasses not only conception in the mother’s womb, but also acceptance in a real family. Today I would like to contemplate with you the beauty of this bond, the beauty of God’s condescension; and we can do this by reciting the Hail Mary together, the first part of which takes up the words of the Angel, those he addressed to the Virgin. I invite you to pray together: Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. And now a second aspect: on 25 March, the Solemnity of the Annunciation, in many countries the Day for Life is cel ebrated. That is why, 20 years ago, St John Paul II on this day signed the Encyclical Evangelium Vitae. In order to commemorate this anniversary there are many followers of the Pro-Life Movement present in the Square today. In Evangelium Vitae, the family occupies a central place, as it is the womb of human life. The word of my venerable Predecessor reminds us that a human couple was blessed from the beginning to form a community of love and life, entrusted with the mission to generate life. Christian spouses, celebrating the Sacrament of Marriage, make themselves open to honour this blessing, with the grace of Christ, for their whole lives. The Church, for her part, is solemnly committed to care for the family that is born, as a gift of God for her life, in good times and in bad: the bond between the Church and the family is sacred and inviolable. The Church, as a mother, never abandons the family, even when it is downhearted, wounded and humiliated in so many ways. Neither when it falls into sin nor moves away from the Church; she will always do everything to try to care for and heal it, to call it to conversion and to reconcile it to the Lord. If this then is the task, it is clear how much prayer the Church needs in order to be able, in every age, to carry out this mission! Prayer full of love for the family and for life. Prayer that can rejoice with the rejoicing and suffer with the suffering. Here then is what I, together with my co-workers, have thought to offer today: renewal of prayer for the Synod of Bishops on the Family. We relaunch this commitment until this coming October, when the Ordinary Synodal Assembly dedicated to the family will take place. I would like this prayer, as the whole journey of the Synod, to be animated by the compassion of the Good Shepherd for his flock, especially for people and families who, for different reasons, are “harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd” (Mt 9:36) . Thus, sustained and animated by the grace of God, the Church can be ever more committed, and ever more united, in the witness of the truth of the love of God and of his mercy for the world’s families, none excluded, both within the fold and without. I ask you, please do not fail to pray. Everyone — the pope, cardinals, bishops, priests, men and women religious, lay faithful — we are all called to pray for the Synod. This is what is needed, not gossip! I also call to prayer those who feel distant or who are no longer used to it. This prayer for the Synod on the Family is for the good of everyone. I know that this morning you were given a holy card, which you are holding in your hands. I invite you to keep it and carry it with you, so that in the coming months you can recite it often, with holy persistence, as Jesus asked us to. Now let us recite it together: Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in you we contemplate the splendour of true love, to you we turn with trust. Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families too may be places of communion and prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic Churches. Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again experience violence, rejection and division: May all who have been hurt or scandalized find ready comfort and healing. Holy Family of Nazareth, may the approaching Synod of Bishops make us more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family, and its beauty in God’s plan. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, graciously hear our prayer. Amen. Yet, the one important thing, “the food that endures for eternal life” (See John 6:24-35) is often neglected, especially during the summer months. They rather stay home or go to the beach, than come to Mass on Sunday as it is our obligation and great blessing. Why is this? Today’s readings show very clearly that God is the Grand Provider. He provided for the Israelites of old and He provides for us today. What is more, in addition to our daily food, He provides heavenly bread, the bread that endures for eternal life. Do you really believe this? Do you have friends that stay home instead of coming to Mass every Sunday? Please, tell them what they are missing. God feeds us at Mass with “the true bread from heaven.” Invite them to come. Remind them that as Saint Paul says in Ephesians it is only when we are fed with the Eucharist, “the true bread from Heaven” that we can lay aside our way of life to be created anew in His image, “in righteousness and holiness of truth.”—See also Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15 and Ephesians 4:17, 20-24 THE MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES NEED YOUR PRAYERS Thomas Burkart, Melissa Castillo, Ensign Frank Chavez, Capt. And while it could be repaired (again) at a cost of a few thousand dollars, I have decided, after going “up and down” that route a few times before, that Our Holy Redeemer has spent enough money on repairs and that it makes more (dollars and) sense to replace it an estimated cost (based on the figures of three proposals) of $40,000.00. In order to help offset that cost, the Parish has reached out to (and is waiting to hear from) Nassau County, the Village of Freeport, and private charitable organizations that grant funds for services that assist the elderly and disabled. Any assistance you can provide will literally give us a lift! The following people have begun to “lift” us up: $20,000.00 $15,000.00 $11,000.00 $10,000.00 Arnold Gallo, William Gallo, The Village of Freeport, the Friends of Angie Cullin, Alan and Cathy Richartz, John Anzovino, Margaret Nyland, Diana Gibson, Our Holy Redeemer Parishioners who participate in the “Oceanside Christopher Federal Credit Union Parish Revenue Sharing Program”, Mr. & Mrs. Walter Shorak, Gloria Di Brizzi, Gloria Cintorino, Barbara and Raymond Burkart, Carol Sparaco, Ann Kelly, Doreen and Donald Smith, Angela and Donald Valone, Joseph F. Mercurio, Charles and Deborah Shields, Court Stella Maris #822 Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Adele and Bob Dzienius, Ellie and Harold Mahony, Angela and Peter Ruiz, Widow & Widowers Club, Richard Roman, In Memory of Maria Arroyo, In Memory of Elizabeth O’Sullivan, The Nocturnal Adoration Society, Linda Assaf, Phyllis and Joe Doyle, Tina Scalamandre, Richard and Rita Barry, Clara H. Lomangino, Donald W. Suchan, Alan and Cathy Richartz, Cathleen August, Mother of Our Holy Redeemer Legion of Mary With their help we raised nearly $15,000! And with help from you, people on the lift will soon be raised up too! OUR HOLY REDEEMER ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH Yes, I would like to help give Our Holy Redeemer “a LIFT!” Please deposit your donation with this form in the Sunday Offertory basket or drop it off at the Rectory, Monday through Saturday from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Invítelos a venir. THE BREAD OF LIFE Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from Heaven, My Father gives you the true Bread from Heaven. For the Bread of God is that which comes down from Heaven and gives life to the world.” So they said to Him, “Sir, give us this Bread always.” Jesus said to them, “I am the Bread of Life; whoever comes to Me will never hunger, and whoever believes in Me will never thirst.” Saint John VI: 32-35 Directions: Find the words below from today’s Scripture reading in the puzzle.
