An Encyclical Letter on Ecology
By: Fr. Tony (Fr. Jose Antonio Caballero)
Before moving on to the subject of God as Trinity, or God revealed in Christ,
it seems appropriate to insert at this time a note about the encyclical letter
that Pope Francis has just published (June 18, 2015) about the care of
creation --the environment.
It is nothing new for the Church to speak out on this issue. The first chapters
of Genesis, in fact, tell us that God made "heaven and earth", that he created everything with his word. The creation from nothing, as a specific topic,
is presented in chapter 7:28 in the Second book of Maccabees.
“I beg you, child, to look at the heavens and the earth and see all that
is in them; then you will know that God did not make them out of
existing things.* In the same way humankind came into existence.”
Genesis portrays man as God's representative, as the administrator – not
owner – of creation. This is the significance of having man as the object of
various attributes: he is the image and likeness of God, he is ordered to care
for and subdue the earth, he names the animals that fly and the wild beasts
on earth and in water. Christ himself delighted in creation ... We know this
from His attentive observation of the natural realities that He freely used in
the many parables as images i.e. the field birds, the flowers, or even a
storm. The evangelists frequently remind us that He withdrew to the mountain in prayer. Moreover, He uses the natural realities to institute the Eucharist (wheat and fruit of the vine). He spoke of water, heat, the shepherd and
sheep, and did so with the familiarity of one who knows that everything has
come from the Father in heaven.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church includes this doctrine, which has
been taught throughout twenty centuries of its history (CCC. 279-324).
Going back to the encyclical letter, Pope Francis cites his predecessors who
have spoken about this and similar issues, to include John XXIII, Paul VI,
John Paul II and Benedict XVI. On the other hand, Pope Francis’ intention is
to place his encyclical letter within the social doctrine of the Church; namely,
to be framed within the reflections of the Church regarding the dignity of the
human being who at the same time is called to participate in the social order,
to respect the common good, to solidarity and responsibility in man’s coexistence with others.
The name of the encyclical letter is not Latin, but old Italian (medieval) "LAUDATO SIʹ " – “Be praised” and is taken from St. Francis of Assisi’s
Canticle of the Sun. The canticle is actually a hymn to creation-- God's work.
It is a sublime poem, full of gratitude; it is praise to God the Creator of all that
exists, written at a time of much pain and suffering of his vision, towards the
end of Saint Francis’ life.
Inspired by St. Francis of Assisi, the Pope reminds us that the Catholic
stance before creation is one of respect, admiration and praise to God. Such
a position is balanced and avoids the two extremes: that of "deifying creation," a pitfall in which certain pantheistic doctrines land, as well as to believe
that, as administrators, we can destroy or alter creation at will.
We should remember the general lines that serve as the structure for this
second encyclical letter of Pope Francis. The Pope starts with a brief analysis of the present ecological crisis, followed by the principles of the JudeoChristian tradition about the environment; thirdly, the Pope examines the
roots of the present situation to move on to certain proposals for dialogue
and action that concern all of us as individuals, and which affect the international community. Our Holy Father’s reflections culminate in guidelines that
can support human development, originating in the treasure of Christian
spiritual experience.
The reading of the encyclical letter "LAUDATO SIʹ " will certainly provide
great spiritual benefit and will remind us of our dependence on God, creator
of all that exists, as well as our duty to take care of our environment as persons and as children of God. Therefore, we are all called to benefit from it
and likewise offer our collaboration.

James: Pearls for Wise Living
James is one of the most practical books
of the Bible. Like the book of Proverbs, it
is a book of wisdom, a collection of teachings on issues faced by ordinary Christians in everyday life. These teachings
speak loudly to all those who feel torn between the
competing demands of this world and their faith. This
study offers "pearls for wise living" by applying the
wisdom of James to the present day. For anyone who
has struggled to live a truly Christian life, James
offers a wealth of practical solutions for handling and
even sanctifying everyday circumstances.
Join us on this adventure of Wise Living Thur,
Sept 10, 2015 through Thur, Nov 19, 2015. We meet
7-9pm in the Parish Hall. The fee is $40 per person
until Aug 28; then $50 after this date. For more information, contact Danna P Sullivan at 210-695-8791

NEW MASS INTENTION POLICY
“Due to a high demand for Mass Intentions, we will
accommodate your request as best as possible; but please
be mindful of the other parishioners requesting Mass
Intentions as well.”
Beginning with the 2016 calendar year, the Mass
Intention book will be made available:

2016
~on Jan. 12, 2016 for the months of Aug. 2016 to Sept.

We highly recommend that our parishioners with
several deceased family members consider consolidating
their intentions. For example: “For All of the Deceased
Members of the Smith Family.” Mass stipends will continue
to be $5 per intention and payment must accompany each
request as keeping track of non-payment places an
additional burden on the office.

JULY 19, 2015
Una encíclica sobre la ecología
Por el padre José Antonio Caballero (Fr. Tony)
VI, Juan Pablo II y Benedicto XVI. Por otro lado, la intención del Papa Francisco es colocar su carta encíclica dentro de la doctrina social de la Iglesia;
