THE NEW COVENANT
Spanish
When the prophet Jeremiah coined the term “new covenant” he was actually doing something quite radical. For the Jewish
people, there was only one covenant, the one made between the Lord God and Israel through Moses at Mount Sinai. For Jeremiah to
suggest that God would somehow supersede the covenant with a new one would have sounded audacious to Jewish ears. But in this
way he is a predecessor of Jesus who, in the Gospel of John, is continually portrayed as superseding the past, establishing the reign
of God in a new way. And in today’s Gospel passage, Jesus the “new covenant” speaks the language of his “new commandment” of
love when he tells of the dying grain of wheat, and of our own need to die to self in order to be raised with Christ. As Lent ends and
we prepare to enter into Holy Week, the dying grain of wheat serves as an excellent symbol of the kind of dying and self sacrifice to
which disciples are called, a symbol of that new covenant written deep within our hearts.

"A person must be of very harsh and unfeeling nature, if he
remains calm and unconcerned when he sees his friend afflicted
with great calamity and plunged into sadness; but how painful is
not this indifference to the friend thus afflicted? Jesus had taken
only three of His Apostles into the Garden of Agony; the pitiable
state to which He was reduced could not make them watch even
one hour with Him.
Jesus Christ is treated in the Blessed Eucharist with coldness and
contempt by the majority of men; … but how few even of those
who claim to be faithful to Him come to the foot of the altar to
keep Him company, and to how many people could Jesus Christ
still make the reproach: ‘Could you not watch one hour with Me?’
What could I answer O Lord, I who lose so many hours in vain
assemblies and in vain amusements?”

Hope you all had a blessed week!
Today is the 5th Sunday of Lent and the 3rd Scrutiny for our
Catechumens and Candidates. Father once again will ask them to come
up to the Altar so he may bless them and then they will be dismissed to
continue the Breaking Open of the Word.
I have mentioned the two previous Sunday’s that this is the time for the
Catechumens and Candidates to really reflect on their journey thus far.
Some have been coming since January a year ago and others have been
coming since late last summer. So the program continues even after
Easter when we take them through Mystagogy. Mystagogy is a period
to get deeper into the mysteries that we have been meditating through
Lent and Easter. It is a continuation of their conversion and runs from
Easter Sunday until Pentecost (50 days). Please continue to pray for our
Catechumens and Candidates.
Our readings during the 10 AM Mass should reflect the following
readings: Ezekiel 37:12-14; Ezekiel the Prophet tells us the Lord has
spoken to him saying “I will put my spirit in you that you may live.”
Let us live in the Spirit of Christ. The second reading is from Romans
8:8-11: St. Paul reminds us that “The Spirit of the One who raised Jesus
from the dead dwells in us”. Today’s Gospel is from John 11:1-45. We
all should recognize the story of Lazarus and Jesus raising him from the
dead. He tells Martha that He is the Resurrection. Let us be mindful that
in order to believe in Jesus’ Resurrection we must also remember his
Crucifixion. For it is through His Cross and Resurrection that we are set
free.
Two announcements this week:
On Thursday evening April 23, 2015, from 7pm-9pm we will have a

The sick and hospitalized are to be held in thought and prayer. For their
family, friends, and faith community, it is often times the only way we
can help and support them.
Please remember names for the sick list in the bulletin have to be called
in to the Parish Office by the person who is ill or by a member of their
family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether
they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family and if
they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be
asked for the correct spelling of the sick person’s name. If a family
member, they will be required to give their name for our records. The
name will be in the bulletin for four weeks.
