Reflections on the Readings
Wisdom is often regarded as a personal attribute,
something that people honor in others. Today’s
readings understand wisdom as a gift that must benefit
the community. Expertise is centrifugal, moving from
one person out to the entire population.
The Book of Wisdom chooses the wise and benevolent
king as the model of human perfection. This ruler
prefers wisdom to wealth, health, beauty, and even
kingship itself. The ideal leader employs wisdom from
the common good.
The responsorial psalm is a meditation on the value of
human life. In verse twelve, the psalmist prays for
wisdom of heart -- the ability to live in balanced
relationship with God and others. Wisdom means that
the community experiences the graciousness of God’s
presence. Wisdom also implies that God acknowledges
human work by giving it fullness and meaning.
Mark depicts a Jesus who is recognized for his
wisdom. Jesus guides the man who wishes to gain
eternal life. Wisdom requires that one first look to the
common good. The man questioning Jesus has
already achieved this level by keeping the
commandments. Wisdom’s second demand is much
more challenging, giving up everything that distracts
him form following Jesus. To sell one’s possessions
and give to the poor is a freeing experience that results
in great service to the community.
Wisdom is required in all real life situations. Parents
become wise in experience and use that grace to guide
their children. Teachers share knowledge with their
students, but even more, they share wisdom. The truly
wise see their expertise not as an honor to be
recognized, but as a gift to be shared.
A new Book Study is beginning!
Sunday October 18th, from 9:15am to
10:45 in the McGivney Room and
continuing on the third Sunday of each
month, there will be a discussion on the best selling
book Being Mortal written by Atul Gawande M.D.
Presentation of the medical model and its impact is
being done in many circles, like Novant Heath
Brunswick Center and Hospice. The discussion,
facilitated by Fran Salone-Pelletier, will focus on
deepening our understanding of what it means to be
mortal… what it means to live until we die. Attendees
can sign up to purchase the book by emailing Fran at
[email protected] or by contacting David
Morris (910) 477-7055 or [email protected].
Payment is $16 will be collected upon receipt of the
book. Newcomers are most welcome to join.
Most of us attend Mass weekly but many are not sure
why the Mass is the way it is. On October 12th and
19th there will be two classes on the history and
meaning of the different parts of the Mass. As part of
the class there will be a non-sacramental Mass (not a
real Mass) being said and an ongoing commentary
explaining what is being done and why. The classes
will be held in the church from 9:30 to 11:00am each
day. These classes are open to all parishioners.
Children’s Choir: We are
pleased to announce that St.
Brendan‘s will be forming a
Children’s Choir beginning in
October for children in
Grades 3 and up under the
direction of Sandy Gemach.
There are registration forms
on the Stewardship Table in the Gathering Space.
Please complete and return before October 21. For

XXVlll Domingo Ordinario
adulterio, no robes, no levantes falso testimonio, no
seas injusto, honra a tu padre y a tu madre”.
