Sometimes we need a caring presence to walk with us on our spiritual journey and help us reflect on our relationship with God. This can bring much needed clarity and spiritual growth. Spiritual Direction is, in reality, nothing more than a way of leading us to see and obey the real Director—the Holy Spirit hidden in the depths of our soul. St. Bartholomew the Apostle Catholic Church, Katy, Texas Vocations / Pastor’s Letter 1965 Hallmark Moments in the Life of our Parish On Sunday, November 1st, 1200+ gathered with His Eminence Daniel Cardinal DiNardo to celebrate the 9am mass of thanksgiving for our 50th anniversary as a parish. Founded in 1965, we celebrate our golden anniversary and began a year of celebrations and activities with our Ordinary, Cardinal DiNardo. I am deeply grateful Fr. Wayne Wilkerson to all who came to join us in this liturgy and celebration that followed in our Family Life Center and Old Hall. A special thanks to Sandra Godfrey who took on the task of organizing our brunch which followed the mass. As well, a round of thanks to our parish staff and all who worked behind the scenes to make this a memorable day. On Sunday, November 22nd, our parish along with Bishop George Sheltz celebrated the Rite of Confirmation. We presented 178 candidates for Confirmation…combined with our Confirmation in April, those who received the Holy Spirit at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Catholic Church number 370. Bishop Sheltz himself praised our parish for such an outstanding number of newly confirmed Catholic Christians. He encouraged our newly confirmed “not to be bench warmers” but rather, to get involved into the life and fabric of our parish. I thank Beth Rady, Director of Youth Ministry, and her team who took on the great task of formation and implementation of the Rite of Confirmation. As well, I thank all who took part in the planning and execution of the liturgy. As we celebrate 50 years as the “mother parish of Katy”, it is most edifying to watch to rapid growth of our faith community. What a pleasure it is to serve you and embrace who God will call us to become in the next 50 years. 50th I would like to purchase a new set of gold vessels to be used on Sundays of Ordinary Time and during the Easter season. As well, a new set of white vestments with palls for funerals that are matching in design would add much to the liturgies of our parish. If you are able, will you please consider gifting the parish at Christmas? Any and all gifts are gratefully received. May God Bless You and Your Generosity. 8 Gold Communion Bowls 8 Gold Communion Cups 1 Large Gold Presider Paten 1 Medium Gold Presider Paten Gold Chalice Gold Ciboria for Tabernacle 1 New Set White Vestments Presider Chasuble (2) Con-celebrant Chasubles (2) Deacon Dalmatics (2) Con-celebrant stoles Funeral Pall (Casket) 6 large oak vessel trays 3 small oak vessel trays 50 purificators 14 corporals (church) 7 corporals (chapel) Crucifixes for offices (36) Urn Funeral Pall (Cremated Remains) God Bless You One and All! St. Bartholomew the Apostle Catholic Church, Katy, Texas Outreach / Respect Life Respect Life It’s time to rediscover God’s mercy, Pope says at Jubilee launch By Ann Schneible Vatican City, Dec 8, 2015 / 04:50 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis has officially commenced the Jubilee of Mercy, calling those who pass through the newly-opened Holy Door to rediscover God’s mercy and experience the mystery of his love. “This Extraordinary Holy Year is itself a gift of grace,” Pope Francis said in his homily for Mass, just before opening the Holy Door in St. Peter’s Basilica. “To pass through the Holy Door means to rediscover the infinite mercy of the Father who welcomes everyone and goes out personally to encounter each of them. This will be a year in which we grow ever more convinced of God’s mercy.” Mercy, he said, must be placed before judgment, though “God’s judgment will always be in the light of his mercy.” “... may we feel that we ourselves are part of this mystery of love,” he said. “Let us set aside all fear and dread, for these do not befit men and women who are loved. Instead, let us experience the joy of encountering that grace which transforms all things.” The Dec. 8 opening of the Jubilee of Mercy, ...coincided with the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. The Holy Year will close Nov. 20, 2016 with the Solemnity of Christ the King. The Jubilee was officially inaugurated by the opening of the Holy Door in St. Peter’s Basilica. Pilgrims who pass through the door -- which is only opened during Jubilee years -- can receive a plenary indulgence under the usual conditions. St. Maria Gorretti: A Pro-Life Patron for Mercy and Justice By Joe Kralo Recently, the major relics of St. Maria Goretti journeyed across the United States. Thousands of people came to the various cities ...to venerate her and to ask for her intercessions. Her life was quite short. She is one of the youngest canonized saints, tragically dying a martyr at the age of 11. Her attacker, and murderer, Alessandro Serenelli had tried to seduce the young Maria. Alessandro became so enraged that he not only tried to rape her, but when she again reminded him of his sin, he stabbed her 14 times. While she is known for her purity, Fr. Carlos Martins says, “there is something much deeper within Maria from which her glory flows, her identification with the Mercy of Christ. No doubt, Maria’s mercy is something that was supernaturally profound especially given the fact that she did not die immediately after attack. She suffered tremendously and it is in her suffering that one can see how she best imitates Christ. As she was about to receive the Viaticum, the hospital chaplain reminded her how Christ forgave His murderers while on the Cross. Maria’s biography states when she was confronted with this reality that she replied, “Yes, for the love of Jesus I too pardon him, and I want him to be with me in heaven” (St. Maria Goretti: In Garments All Red, Ch. 10, pg. 47). ...The Catechism states, “The works of mercy are charitable actions by which we come to the aid of our neighbor in his spiritual and bodily necessities. Instructing, advising, consoling, comforting are spiritual works of mercy, as are forgiving and bearing wrongs patiently. ... St. Maria Gorretti shows an extraordinary respect for not only human dignity, but for the sexual act as well. As a child killed by violence herself and as the patron saint for youth, she understands that violence towards the most innocent, including the unborn, is contrary to not only the mercy of Christ, but His justice as well. THE WISDOM OF THE BIBLICAL ACCOUNTS 66. The harmony of St. Francis of Assisi with all creatures was seen as a healing of the break in the harmonious relationship between humans and nature. This is a far cry from our situation today where sin manifests itself in all its destructive power. Adult CCE Classes! Wednesdays at 5:30pm in T-16 or 7pm in FLC Room 201 Thursdays at 6:30pm, in REC Room 210 67. We are not God. The earth was here before us. This allows us to respond to the charge that the Genesis account grants man an absolute “dominion” over the earth. This is an incorrect interpretation of the Bible as understood by the Church. We must reject that our being created in God’s image and given dominion over the earth justifies absolute domination over other creatures. The biblical texts tells us to “till and keep” the garden of the world. “Tilling” means cultivating, while “keeping” means caring and preserving, a mutual responsibility. Each community can take from the earth whatever it needs while protecting the earth for coming generations. “The earth is the Lord’s.” God rejects every claim to absolute ownership; “…for the land is mine. You are strangers and sojourners with me.” This is an open class and you may come whenever you are able. For more info contact Joan Summers at 281-391-4758 ext 437. 68. This responsibility for God’s earth means that human beings must respect the laws of nature and the equilibrium existing between the creatures. For “he commanded and they were created.” He established them forever. The laws found in the Bible dwell on relationships, not only among individuals but also with other living beings. “You shall not see your brother’s donkey or his ox fallen down and withhold your help.” Clearly, the Bible has no place for a tyrannical man-centered unconcerned for other creatures. Join Us as We Stir Into Flame the Gift of The Holy Spirit! 69. By virtue of our dignity, we are called to respect creation and its inherent laws. In our time, the Church does not simply state that other creatures are completely subordinated to the good of human beings, as if they have no worth. The German bishops have taught that “we can speak of the priority of being over that of being useful.” Man must therefore respect the particular goodness of every creature, to avoid a disordered use of things. 70. In the story of Cain and Abel, envy led Cain to commit the ultimate injustice against his brother, rupturing the relationship between Cain and God, and between Cain and the earth. This is seen in the dramatic exchange between God and Cain. “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground.” Disregard for maintaining a proper relationship with my neighbor ruins my relationship with my own self, with others, with God and with the earth. When all these relationships are neglected, when justice no longer dwells in the land, the Bible tells us that life itself is endangered. We see this in the story of Noah as well. These ancient stories bear witness that everything is interconnected. Care for our lives and our relationship with nature is inseparable from fraternity, justice and faithfulness to others. Please Note: Laudato Si’ is available through local Catholic bookstores or on the web at EWTN or the Vatican.
